How many machine washes do you do a day?

Ahemhmm · 08/02/2024 11:29

Family of 6 (and 4 pets) so I do 2 a day minimum and use the dryer unless it's summer.

Each person has a day for their weekly basket of clothes to be washed.
Then there's always another load to do, bedding, towels, pet bedding, cushion covers, coats etc.

per week I'm probably doing
2 x bedding
1 x towels
3 x dark loads
1 x white
average one a day I guess

Nottodaty · 08/02/2024 11:57

3 adults and 1 teenager! Dog and 2 cats

Bed linen wash - 2 a week m
towel wash - 2 a week
Dark (pants etc) 1 a week
lights (pants etc) 1 a week
dark gentle - blazers/jeans/dresses - 2 a week
lights gentle - 1 a week

every couple of weeks will do dog stuff wash - toys/towels - but this means I always do a machine wash after

Scarily adding up to around 9/10 washes a week! I stretch them out often putting the washing machine on a timer so it comes on in the morning and I can hang it out before going to work.

Rosesanddaisies1 · 08/02/2024 11:58

2 adults, maybe 2-3 a week. We're careful to only wash where necessary. Never owned a dryer, never felt the need for one.

salcombebabe · 08/02/2024 11:59

I’m single and do about 3 or 4 a week depending on bedding and throw. One lights, one darks, one towels and then possibly another one or two every couple of weeks

Tessisme · 08/02/2024 12:01

2 adults, 1 teenager and 1 preteen.

1 wash a day. Every week to 10 days or so, I need to do 2 in the one day. I do throw the odd couple of things in on a 14 minute cycle if urgently needed.

Octaviathethird · 08/02/2024 12:04

2 adults and a 5 year old, one wash every 5 - 7 days. Then bedding when I remember! Sometimes I have to do a 13 minute quick wash if somethings been spilt or my dd's school uniform is wet. We have a 10kg loader and I don't separate colours/whites/towels, just chuck it all in. We don't have a dryer, I hang clothes up to dry on the curtain rails upstairs and put non hangable things on airers, normally put in the spare room.

Namechange13101 · 08/02/2024 12:05

2a and 2c (one at school one at nursery) Husband wears uniform to work and has to wear home clothes both to and from work. We both of us go to the gym around twice a week and i probably do on average one wash a day sometimes two a day at the weekend to include towels/bedding and or swimming stuff after swimming lessons! Also use the drier in the winter as don't have anywhere to hang loads of damp washing inside!

Allthescreens · 08/02/2024 12:06

5 people- 2 adults, 1 football-playing (goalie) teen, 1 autistic pre-teen who spills every meal down himself, 1 primary schooler who has swimming lessons once a week.

Roughly a load per day. No tumble drier & no interest in getting one. Do have a dehumidifier & hang washing outside when not raining.

Electric & gas DD just gone up by £18 to £160 per month.

WinkyTinky · 08/02/2024 12:10

Four people in the house, two washes on a weekend, once midweek.

BarbaricPeach · 08/02/2024 12:15

2 adults and 1 toddler here. I usually do five a week. One for each of our clothes then also separate washes for towels and sheets.

PlantDoctor · 08/02/2024 12:17

It does depend on the size of your washing machine. Some are much bigger than others. Also adults here wear trousers and jumpers maybe three times (unless stained). They are bulky and would easily fill a load otherwise.

minipie · 08/02/2024 12:19

2 adults 2 kids.

It was 4 loads a week - one dark one light one towels one bedding. Plus the occasional delicates or coats, maybe one of those per month.

It’s creeping up to more like 5/6 loads a week, darks seem to build up quicker at the moment (sports kit and winter related). Expect it to drop back down in summer though.

We have an 11kg machine so all loads are large - eg can fit all the bedding for our king size and DC singles into one load.

Aworldofmyown · 08/02/2024 12:19

5 household here, only one under ten years old. Plus a dog. We do 1-2 loads a day on average, although I do it over the weekend so I don't feel like I'm constantly washing.

Schum · 08/02/2024 12:21

6 of us, I do 2-3 loads a day. I have two washers and two dryers so it’s really easy.

CalmAChameleon · 08/02/2024 12:21

This is going to be hugely affected by the size of your washing machine. I was impressed by a PP saying they only did 4 washes a week for a family or 4, until they mentioned "bedding and towels" as one of those loads. No way would I get bedding and towels for 4 people into one single load!

minipie · 08/02/2024 12:22

If that’s me Calm I can’t get both into one load but I can get all the towels into a load, and all the bedding into a load.

K0OLA1D · 08/02/2024 12:24

2 adults, 2 kids, 3 (and a half cats) and a DDog and I do around 3 or 4 loads a week. Use the dryer this time of year too.

CalmAChameleon · 08/02/2024 12:25

@minipie No, not you - someone further up who mentioned it as one load out of their weekly four. I'd love to have a machine that big!

eurochick · 08/02/2024 12:25

3 x bedding
1 x towels
1 x dark clothes
2x kids clothes - lights and darks (she has sensitive washing powder so her clothes are washed separately)

And then fortnightly
1 x underwear
1 x light clothes
1 x additional sheets (our machine will only fit duvet cover plus pillow cases so sheets are washed in a separate load)

TwistedSisters · 08/02/2024 12:25

isthistoonosy · 08/02/2024 11:31

Family of four, 3 dogs. 1-2 per week, never use the dryer.

How is this possible? Surely with 4 people you have at least 2 washes of clothes, lights and darks. What about bedding, towels, cloths, delicate items, any other random things thaat occasionally need doing like coats ?

BobnLen · 08/02/2024 12:26

About 4 a week, 2 adults, I use the dryer in the winter generally but as it has been fairly mild and windy lately I have been hanging washing out

Oblomov23 · 08/02/2024 12:27

Family of 4, 4 a week.

Are you farmers or similar??

Ahemhmm · 08/02/2024 12:28

Jules912 · 08/02/2024 11:47

1-2 a day family of 4, no pets but children quite young. Why are you washing by person? I do by colour/cycle so roughly:
Darks
Jeans (everyone seems to live in them so make a full load)
Delicates (by colour so usually 2 loads)
Lights
Whites
School uniform
Towels and bedding (2-3 loads)

I'm washing by person because I have ADHD and I really struggle with washing.

If I tell 6 people to all put their washing in one room/basket there's no way I'm going to organise it all by denim colour etc.

Then when it comes out I have to sort it all out by person again (which isn't easy with 3 teens all in similar age range so I have to check labels for ages etc)

Then sort it back into their baskets.

So for me it's easier to say 'on a Tuesday X. drops his basket and bedding into the laundry room, I wash it, fold it back I to his basket and he gets if from the room after school and puts his washing away.

It just works better for me as when I tried to do it the other way I would just shut down feeling overwhelmed until there were bags and bags of dirty washing and it felt like too big of a job.

2 adults, 2 kids, probably each week its 4-5 loads of clothes, 2-3 of towels, bedding only every 2 weeks, but thats 4 loads as we've got a superking and 2 kids beds, and another load if we go swimming which we do often, so that's like 11 a week.

We don't have a dryer, so its a constant process of putting on loads as soon as the dryers are free. We do have a woodburner so when its on we'll get 2 loads dried overnight, that really helps!
