How many machine washes do you do a day?

Ahemhmm · 08/02/2024 11:29

Family of 6 (and 4 pets) so I do 2 a day minimum and use the dryer unless it's summer.

Each person has a day for their weekly basket of clothes to be washed.
Then there's always another load to do, bedding, towels, pet bedding, cushion covers, coats etc.

2 adults and 2 dogs, I usually do 2 dark loads per week, one light load a load of towels and one of bedding then dog towels & blankets.
I do a mix of tumble and clothes airer.

GingerIsBest · 08/02/2024 14:08

I'm quite relieved by this thread as other threads like this I've seen are dominated by the "family of 6, we do 3 loads a week" and it's unbelievable to me.

Family of 4 with pets (although frankly, t hey don't add THAT much to our washing) and we do:
4-5 small loads because DH has a small load of work clothes that have to be washed every day and usually separate so I exclude those as it's a weird and irritating aberration.

2-3 loads of bedding per week (our bedding is changed weekly, kids fortnightly. Kingsize for us with added double bed duvet for me, singles for the kids).
2 loads towels - bath sheets and swimming towels so take up space
3-4 loads of darks
1 load whites

The towel/bedding/darks loads will be higher on weeks I am washing all the random dog towels/mats or doing loads of coats for example, but those aren't done weekly.

And while DD does have an irritating habit of adding things to washing basket if she's so much as looked at them, overall, we're not a family of "wore for 10 minutes, MUST BE WASHED."

But I worked out once that just underwear and pjs would basically be well over one full load. it's 4x7 underpants/panties, 4x7 PJ pants or similar. PJ tops tend to be worn twice each but still 2x7 say. I wear a vest daily except in the absolute height of summer, so that's 7 vests. 4 x 7 pairs of socks. Bras are worn for more than one day (me) so let's say x3, and DD has started wearing bralettes on days she has PE or non-leotard dance days so let's say that's another 3. Then on top of that, DD does dance 3x a week, DS has extracurricular sport as often as 7 days a week. PE kits are washed weekly....

And all this before we get to the everyday wear of t-shirts, and trackies and jeans and shirts etc. Proper jumpers are washed infrequently - I do a delicates/wool cycle about once a month only - but there's still plenty!

Family of 4. I prob do 4 a week - one whites, one bedding and towels and 2 dark.

Family of 3 and 2 dogs and 2 cats and I do exactly the same too, but occasionally about once a fortnight I have to do a pet wash for their blankets as well.

GingerIsBest · 08/02/2024 14:11

@caringcarer how big is your machine? I have a 9kg machine (massive step up from my old 7kg) and there's no way I could do one load for bedding.

Our bed: King size, cotton duvet cover. 6x pillow cases. 1 x kingsize sheet. 1 x double bed duvet cover
DCs beds: 2 x single sheets, 2x single duvet covers, 4x pillow cases, 1x bolster case.

That's a LOT more than one load right there.

Tetsuo · 08/02/2024 14:12

There's an easy answer to all this pyjama washing.

Sleep in the nip.

Tetsuo · 08/02/2024 14:14

I have an 11kg machine @GingerIsBest, it easily takes a super king duvet cover, sheet, and six pillow cases.

Get a new machine!

mejon · 08/02/2024 14:17

2 adults, 2 teens, 1 cat 9kg machine
Usually 3 or 4 loads a week.
School uniforms and other bits every Friday, DH uniform on Saturday and I'll do a couple of others during the week - we don't have enough white items to do a separate white wash weekly.
I've accumulated enough bedding and towels in my adult life to be able to replace without washing the old ones weekly. I tend to wait until the weather is nice enough to dry these outside, unless we've had weeks of rain.
My mind boggles at doing 2 or 3 loads a day!

ShinyBandana · 08/02/2024 14:18

2 adults, 2 teens, 1 hairy dog: I probably do 2 loads during the week (bedding, blankets, dog towels and cushions) School uniforms etc on Fri night. Kids’s baskets on Sat (2 loads), our basket on Sunday (2 loads). That’s 7 loads each week. I don’t have a dryer - they get hung up in the lean-to (‘laundry room’) in spring and summer and near radiators during the winter. Bedding is washed every 2 weeks so I alternate kids bedding changes with our bed change.
When we’ve had guests/sleepovers my whole system goes to pot!

DoodlesMam · 08/02/2024 14:20

2 Adults 2 cats we both work full time in offices. I do 3 loads a week, 1 white/light, 1 dark/denim and 1 delicate wash. That includes washing the KS duvet cover set every week. That's it. have a 9kg LG washer which helps! I tumble the towels if it's raining, dry everything in the garden in spring summer and autumn. I avoid ironing.

Moier · 08/02/2024 14:23

Just me.. pensioner . Once a every other day then dryer ( never hang out).. clothes that don't go in dryer l hang in spare bedroom above radiator.
Always two towels per day.. pj's every day.. then what l wore that day.
I change my bedding twice a week too.

Peanutsnanna · 08/02/2024 14:33

Two adults, retired. A load for clothes every day but alternate between light and dark. Once a week for bedding and towels. Do wash coats when they need it and also slippers.Dry outside if possible or around the log burner. Have a dryer but rarely use it. I couldn't just shove everything in together. It must all look grey and dingy.

You are a little over the top. No one needs to wash two towels a day or bedding twice a week (medical issues aside).

hiredandsqueak · 08/02/2024 14:53

3 adults and 1 dog here. I do a load every day and sometimes extra at the weekend. I hang out whenever I can but use the dryer and airers when it's not drying outside.

Nomorenamechanges · 08/02/2024 15:17

Three adults, one teen, no pets

We do 1-2 loads each day Mon-Friday, 8kg machine.
4 dark: 2 ours, 1 each that the children do themselves
1 towels and bath mats
1 bedding
1 whites
1 other: mats/ coats/ couch covers/ catch up as needed

Everyone takes turns to fold in the evening and helps hang out first thing if it's dry, DH or I iron shirts and smart stuff once a week.

Only use the dryer when it's raining.

ifonly4 · 08/02/2024 15:19

Three adults, 3-4 washes a week - we have a 7kg drum so that can take more than some.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/02/2024 15:21

Two adults, 2 washes a week. One is for clothing (everything in together) and the other is either bedding or towels

WhatchaLookingAt · 08/02/2024 15:34

Family of 4, 5 loads a week usually, but if you saw our washing baskets, you’d think we never did any laundry.
In winter, the cold weather and no dryer means everything takes longer to dry & it quickly piles up when you have a pre schooler & an 1 year old.

Roll on warmer, sunnier weather, I actually miss hanging it on the washing line!

Ginmonkeyagain · 08/02/2024 15:38

Two adults. One to two loads a week.

spicedlemonpie · 08/02/2024 15:50

Just me no pets once a fortnight one load.

RedDuffle · 08/02/2024 15:59

2 adults and a 1yo here.

I usually do about 3 or 4 loads per week I think, but we are limited on drying space (no garden). Ideally I could probably do more as the washing basket is usually full/overflowing but each load takes a couple of days to dry. I use the dryer for things that can go in to alleviate this where I can.

2 or 3 washes would be mine & DP's clothes. Then 1 wash for baby, who has enough clothes to get through longer than a week without a wash!

I have to admit towels and bedding do suffer here, they get forgotten about and put in when I remember. They are much more ad hoc, probably once every 2 weeks or longer as we have multiple sets we can replace used ones with while they sit in the wash basket.

BMW6 · 08/02/2024 16:12

2 retired adults, no pets.

Twice a week clothes wash, once every 2 weeks bedding and towels.

Bemyclementine · 08/02/2024 16:15

1 adult, 2 kids, 1 cat. 4 or 5 a week.

Decafflatteplease · 08/02/2024 16:33

2 adults 4 children here. I do at least one a day. Most evening I put on one person's clothes (makes it easier to put away if all for same person) and hang up. 24 hours later finish in dryer if not dry then next load goes on. Then some days there will be a towel wash as well as a clothes wash, or bedding. Towels and bedding are tumble dried.

School uniform and work stuff has separate washing baskets from normal clothes and this all gets done on a weekend. (One pe kit, forest kit etc, one girls wash, one boys wash, mine and DH wash, and a white shirts wash)

UnhealthyCopingStrategies · 08/02/2024 17:17

Family of 4 and it's daily but twice at the weekend. Uniform/clothes, towels and bedding - how can people get away with washing twice a week????

Delatron · 08/02/2024 17:23

2 adults 2 teen (sporty) boys plus stinky dog.

I’d say about 8 loads a week -
most days I do one or two then occasionally get so sick of it all - mainly the putting away of said washing, I have a day off. Washing baskets are never empty. It’s perplexing.
