How many machine washes do you do a day?

Ahemhmm · 08/02/2024 11:29

Family of 6 (and 4 pets) so I do 2 a day minimum and use the dryer unless it's summer.

Each person has a day for their weekly basket of clothes to be washed.
Then there's always another load to do, bedding, towels, pet bedding, cushion covers, coats etc.

1 adult and 1 DCat. 1 clothes wash a week and 1 sheets/towels every 10 - 14 days. A wool wash once or twice a month in the autumn and winter. No dryer.

Family of four. Two or three loads a day. They are not always full loads though but I still need them done. So for example, I may need to do a load of white washing and don't have enough for a full load but kids need school shirts washed.

Would it not be easier and cheaper to buy enough uniform/underclothes/whatever to ensure you have enough to get through the week without doing loads of small loads? School shirts can be picked up really cheaply then you can just wash them all at the same time?

My ds is finishing school this year so I'm a bit reluctant to buy new uniform as he won't need any of it in a 3/4 months time.

Comedycook · 08/02/2024 13:31

Also I'm a sahm so it's not a hassle. if I worked I'd definitely buy five sets of uniform for the week.

Sprogonthetyne · 08/02/2024 13:32

2 adults & 2 kids. Today (Thursday) is my washing day, I'll do 3 loads, one will be hung on the airer and this time of year I take the other 2 to the laundrette to tumble dry. From March to September everything gets line/airer dried.

Frosty1000 · 08/02/2024 13:32

2 adults and 1 child+ a cat that refuses to sit on any bedding or blankets so generates no washing.

I do about 8 washes a week. Only day I do 2 washes is a Sunday when I do the bedding as they don't fit together. Some loads are only small like 5 school polos as I keep them white and then swimming stuff for DC. So clothes only 3 loads a week.

Only dry socks/underwear in dryer and finishing off towels and bedding. Can't wait for it to be a bit warmer as drying outside doesn't really get it totally dry at the moment.

We have a 9 kg machine.

Viewfrommyhouse · 08/02/2024 13:32

At least 1 a day, sometimes 2. I use my tumble dryer with gay abandon.

JustWonderingIfImNormal · 08/02/2024 13:34

family of 4 + 1 pet. Washing machine is on 2 times a day. I don’t know where it all comes from!

SgtJuneAckland · 08/02/2024 13:36

At least one a day, 2 adults 1 dc

To those questioning the logic of washing by person - I urge you to try it. It's a gamechanger.
There are only three of us at home now, but I change beds and towels weekly (bi-weekly for teen) and my routine is:
Change beds on Sunday, along with son's towels (white) and handtowels in other bathrooms.
Sunday: Son's clothes and his non-white bedding
Monday: Whites (most of the bedding and towels that fit)
Tuesday: Another whites load if needed (superking duvet cover etc)
Wednesday: Mine and DH's clothing
Thursday: Towels changed and washed along with any stray white T shirts, pants, socks etc
Friday: Cloths, non-white towels, bathmats
Saturday: Wools and delicates

Key to my regime is making sure we have enough towels and clothes to get through to the next designated washing day and I also don't use fabric conditioner so I can wash towels with clothing.

Advantage is you are always on top of where something is and you never go to the cupboard to find eg the duvet cover hasn't been washed or you've run out of socks.

1 Wash a day, maximum here! But then we don't have a tumble dryer, or anywhere to put one, so we have to dry in a room with dehumidifier running. But even in summer I only ever do one wash a day.

I don't get this ...so when you do your son's clothes on Sunday, what happens if there are black joggers and white t shirts? Do you put them in together?

Tiddlywinks63 · 08/02/2024 13:42

2 retired adults, one 🐶
Probably 4 or 5 loads a week, I try to avoid using the dryer.

SantanaBinLorry · 08/02/2024 13:43

Two adults two teens.
3 - 4 washed a week. Done over a weekend. Washed dried and put away by Sunday eve. Machine rarely goes on mid week. I hate having laundry 'hanging round' for day\weeks\indefinitely 😆
Whites wash every two weeks, only ever school shirts and towels.
Bedding once a month

No, the white T-shirts etc are done with the white loads on either Monday or Thursday

Abouttimemum · 08/02/2024 13:46

Me, DH and DS aged 4 and I wash maybe 3 or 4 times a week

Morecatsarebetter · 08/02/2024 13:51

Three adults one cat. Average one to two washes a day. I like to keep on top of it. No tumble dryer. Two airers

SantanaBinLorry · 08/02/2024 13:52

Oh, we wash by person too.
Fri eve - boy 1 washes and hangs out to dry.
Sat am - boy 2 - same as above. Boy 1 folds\puts\away\adds to ironing pile.
Sat pm - Me and OH wash\hang out. Boy 2 puts away\adds to ironing.I
Sunday pm - anything not quite dry get chucked in dryer for ten mins. Boy 1 does the family ironing 😉

I've got everyone well trained !

Goneforaride · 08/02/2024 13:53

We are two retired adults and a dog. I do 3-4 washes per week - a mix of clothing and bed linen and towels. Recently invested in a new 10Kg capacity machine, which helps.

Ineedanewsofa · 08/02/2024 13:56

2 adults, 1 child, no household pets. 2 x bedding, 2 x towels, 1 darks, 1 lights, 1 colours. So 7 a week, but all done over the weekend. Dryer for sheets and towels, hang everything else

HowDoTheyGetThroughLife · 08/02/2024 13:56

Two of us, retired. No pets. I have the washer on about 5 days a week.

We change our underwear and tops every day. Jeans/trousers/skirts every 3 days, on average. My bra after 2 or 3 wears.

Bedding (1 double, 1 single as he's in the single when he snores too much) changed every week. Towels weekly. Teatowels & dishcloths daily.

maddiemookins16mum · 08/02/2024 13:57

3 adults here. 5 - 6 loads a week. We have a new 9kg machine. Beds changed every week, towels changed Saturdays and Wednesdays.

We do tend to make clothes last, will wear things a second time (except tops, underwear and socks). I’ve had the same trousers on 3 days running (WFH). DH can get 4 days out of his jeans. Pyjamas at least three nights.

QuestionableMouse · 08/02/2024 13:57

Just me and two cats - about four loads a week.

FinallyHere · 08/02/2024 13:58

Now in our later life, we have a service which picks up, washes snd irons at 07:00 and returns by lunch time. Increasing infirmity means we are regular users. I

I understand that a lot of their business comes from less regular one-offs as people catch up after holidays, visitors etc.

Just a thought if you are finding you fall behind.

Riverlee · 08/02/2024 13:59

Three adults, one dog

Approx. . Five washes per week.

2-3 clothes
1 whites (usually every other week, when there’s enough to justify a load
1-2 -sheets
1-2 - towels

Clothes dried on airer with dehumidifier, apart from sheets and towels which go in tumble drier. Also use tumble drier to finish off drying clothes.
