How many machine washes do you do a day?

Ahemhmm · 08/02/2024 11:29

Family of 6 (and 4 pets) so I do 2 a day minimum and use the dryer unless it's summer.

Each person has a day for their weekly basket of clothes to be washed.
Then there's always another load to do, bedding, towels, pet bedding, cushion covers, coats etc.

2 adults. 2 children. 3 or 4 washes a week depending on whether bedding needs washing. Try not to use the dryer if possible.

freeedum · 08/02/2024 21:20

Just me and my husband. We do washing on Weds and Thurs but 4-5 washes: one whites, two darks, then bedding, and sometimes if need be a longer wash for gym/sweaty clothes if thats what we need. We usually wait to Weds and Thurs and keep clean “home clothes” about to lounge around in as the clothes are washed. We only use the dryer for bedding over winter/wet weather. We have an airer and dehumidifier that helps so much. I tend to air the house out a lot on washing days We are quite minimalistic but its just two of us

1 adult 2 children.

2 clothes washes a week 1 lights, 1 darks. Bedding and towels done fortnightly.

we wear clothes more than once and don’t wash it unless it’s actually dirty

We do the same. I can't understand this need to wash things when they've hardly been worn. Much better for the environment and the bills to keep the washing down!

We do! 4 bath towels, one per person used for half a week. 2 dog towels (obviously washed separately - essential for our river loving labrador), 4 hand towels (four bathrooms), 3 bathmats. We use them a lot and the teens do sports as well as DH and me being home all day so the towels get a lot of use and really do need washing twice a week.

Now I’m thankful for only having one bathroom (and no dog) as well as for having a (comparatively) small bed! We are sporty and DH cycles to work/I WFH but I couldn’t be bothered with so much washing. Our towels are only used to dry clean people and then hung up on a rail/over the side of the bath to dry.

I dread to think how much some posters electric and water bills are

JasmineIndigo · 08/02/2024 23:33

2 adults, 2 children and we do two loads once a week. I couldn’t imagine spending everyday hanging out and sorting washing. We don’t even separate whites and colours - I didn’t think you needed to these days with modern washing capsules and our whites always come out fine..

Britinme · 09/02/2024 05:32

2 adults and we do 3 washes a week - one dark, one light and one white. We use the dryer all the time, though I have a heated cupboard where I can hang things that I don't want to put in the dryer.

Thank goodness for a normal person!

Women! Remove those chains! Have a life away from your laundry! Btw, hope your men aren't sitting idle not helping...

It's not a woman thing to want clean towels, both me and my partner clean towels after two uses because they don't feel as crisp afterwards

2 uses?!

I just want to get dry after a wash. What does it matter how the towel feels? An astonishing waste of resources.

Delatron · 09/02/2024 07:34

To be fair I don’t go crazy with the towels. I would leave those a week before washing.

Ginmonkeyagain · 09/02/2024 07:43

We get a week out of towels before washing them. It's fine if you hang them up properly.

I am definitely not spending my life washing and drying towels.

NotFastButFurious · 09/02/2024 07:43

Single adult household and just put my 3rd wash of the week on because my bedding has to be split across 2 loads or the washer doesn’t spin! I’ll have a 4th load by the end of the weekend. I gym or run most days so that adds a load to the laundry but I wear most work clothes 2 days. I don’t have a drier.

pinkstripeycat · 09/02/2024 07:45

1 x load per day. Always done this even when kids were little. In the summer I wash bedding a lot more as I can hang it on the line.

Family of 4 adults: (adult) kids 2 school shirts per day, 1 T-shirt each per day (as they come home from school and sit still) if a weekend 2 T-shirts each, if they go to the gym or a run it’s a very thin running top & shorts takes up no space. Daily pants, daily socks, 1 x fleece a week, maybe 2 joggers each, 2 x towel each per week

DH work clothes: one load every 4 days work kit, sports clothes, socks & pants.

I put mine in with kids. I sit still all day at work so wear 1 tshirt & pants per day & 1 x trousers every other day. Gym kit small and skinny

Dog beds & towels once per week

lifeispainauchocolat · 09/02/2024 07:47

Two adults, four animals - I'm a dog walker and DH is a plasterer so we both work messy jobs.

We do:

2 x towels
1 x bedding
2 x blankets
3 x clothes
1 x DH work stuff

It's a lot but that includes all our muddy work gear plus all the towels I get through cleaning up filthy dogs. It's less in summer!

Favouritefruits · 09/02/2024 09:31

@DocOck easily,, I have a super king bed so can’t wash the bottom sheet and duvet together, kids bedding is the same I wash their bottom sheets together and their duvets pillows that’s 4washes a week then towels are changed 3x a week the kids towels snd bath mat go in one was mine and DH towels and flannels in the other wash that 13washes then school uniform, clothes they kids wear at weekend and after school, dance uniforms mine and DH clothes …..

Indeed. I now realise why our washing machine has lasted almost 25 years.

NotFastButFurious · 09/02/2024 11:06

towels changed 3 times a week or every 2 days?!? I'm starting to understand why some folk moan so much about their energy bills!!

minipie · 09/02/2024 11:53

Yes I can see if you are a dog walker and plasterer couple you’d get through a lot more laundry than a desk job person.

Crunchymum · 09/02/2024 11:57

Probably 7 or 8 now I've counted them up. Thought it was less as I don't do laundry everyday but then I often do two lots on a day when I am do.

Family of 5 and 2 cats (who cover everything they look at in white furr!)

GingerIsBest · 09/02/2024 11:57

Tetsuo · 08/02/2024 14:14

I have an 11kg machine @GingerIsBest, it easily takes a super king duvet cover, sheet, and six pillow cases.

Get a new machine!

But you only seem to have one bed. We have 3. So I need two loads - one for our bed (kingsize duvet cover, kingsize sheet, regular double duvet cover, 6 pillow cases). and one for the kids (2 single bed duvet covers, 2 single sheets, 4 pillow cases). Usually, the second load is smaller so I add a couple of towels or something.

And then we wash towels and bathmats once a week - but that's 2 bathmats, 4 bath sheets, 2 swimming/gym towels and 3 hand towels. Which is usually about 2 loads.

Also realised I didn't comment on dryer - we use it for towels and bedding only as a rule. Clothes are all hung up on heated rack or in airing cupboard. I can easily wash and dry two good sized loads on heated drier in one day - just takes a little commitment to how we hang things and what we choose to wash first/last.

"SameSameButDeliverance · Yesterday 20:09

@Kalevala

but I can't get my head around more than a full clothes wash and a towels/bedding wash for one person.

Why? As set out in my post, whites, darks, gym, bedding - all mounts up."

You don't have to wash the bedding every week if you sleep alone.

When I did whites, it wasn't every week. You just wait until you have a full load.

How do you have a full load of towels every week as one person? I'd use one bath towel and one hand towel in a week and occasionally wash the hand towel in the kitchen. Towels don't need to be washed after every use. (I do acknowledge that some people use towels more intensively as I do as I just wrap it around me rather than towel dry every part of my body).

Gym clothes I can understand would cause an extra load if you exercise a lot.

SameSameButDeliverance · 09/02/2024 13:15

@Gwenhwyfar not sure why you’ve chosen me out of the line up but here you go:

You don't have to wash the bedding every week if you sleep alone.

I chose to.

When I did whites, it wasn't every week. You just wait until you have a full load.

Ok. That’s your experience. It’s not mine (fancy that!?!).

How do you have a full load of towels every week as one person? I'd use one bath towel and one hand towel in a week and occasionally wash the hand towel in the kitchen.

I use 2 bath sheets a week - bigger than a bath towel. I use 3 hand towels a week as I work from home and wash my hands as frequently as required. I chose to wash the kitchen hand towel more often than ‘occassionally’.

Towels don't need to be washed after every use. (I do acknowledge that some people use towels more intensively as I do as I just wrap it around me rather than towel dry every part of my body).

They are not washed after every use.

Gym clothes I can understand would cause an extra load if you exercise a lot.

I do and thank you so much for the approval.

Kalevala · 09/02/2024 21:07

People value such different things. I chose small bath towels deliberately to minimise washing. I'd hate the burden of multiple bath sheets and king sized bedding to wash. I don't know where I'd dry it either.

Miy · 10/02/2024 11:55

Around 1-2 a day with 4 kids 2 adults. It's not the best should do more lol

potato57 · 22/03/2024 17:30

I do one a week.
