Do you generally always get a takeaway at the weekend?

We are finding it just getting a little expensive to do every weekend. I'm trying to do little takeaway meals to make it exciting but according to my 15 year old EVERYONE in his class get a takeaway at the weekend. Surely not.

No, but I always want one! Then I remember how overpriced and shite they are where I live. The only one which is worth it is the chippy and that gets too busy on weekend evenings. I might get that on a weekday next week though, now you've mentioned it...

Wednesdaysphiltrum · 03/02/2024 19:41

God no. It’s always supposed to be a treat and it never is. It’s expensive and never as good as you hope. Plus generally awful for you and leaves me with weird dreams and feeling gross.
I do get a really authentic curry from an incredible place about once ever since months.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 03/02/2024 19:43

Yes we normally have a takeaway every Friday. Costs about £50 for five of us. Or about £20 if we have fish and chips.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/02/2024 19:44

No, it’s a very occasional thing, and if now and then I CBA to cook, it’s usually a ready meal. Not really a question of ££, it’s just never been a habit here.

ohtowinthelottery · 03/02/2024 19:44

Very rarely get a takeaway. We are a foodie family and enjoy cooking. Take aways are always full of promise but fail to deliver as far as we are concerned so a complete waste of money. We'd rather spend that money on a decent bit of fish from the market or a good bit of steak. Both quicker and easier to cook than getting a take out anyway - 10 mile round trip to collect one, only 1 place delivers here.
Our guilty pleasure is fish and chips from a quality chip shop at the coast - either in my home town (80 miles away) or when visiting DHs family (200 miles away).

ColdButSunny · 03/02/2024 19:45

We get a takeaway around once every three or four weeks.

SavingEveryLastPenny · 03/02/2024 19:46

Used to without fail every Saturday and some Fri's! . Then dropped to fortnightly then monthly. Now just occasionally.

CarbsafterMarbs · 03/02/2024 19:46

Nope! Occasional treat for us. I prefer to make our own fakeaway on weekends.

SomethingWycked · 03/02/2024 19:48

We have a supermarket takeaway on a Friday, either Curry/Chinese with sides as there is 3 of us or made in store pizza's with garlic bread. We have a chippy tea (from the specials menu) 1 or twice a month & occasionally McDonalds, about 1 per month.

Find takeaways too expensive & there is just 3 of us.

Blimey, where do you live and can I move there?! Cod, chips, mushy peas is £15 for one round here.

Waitingfordoggo · 03/02/2024 19:55

No- it’s so expensive! If my DH and DS were in charge, it would be every weekend but I usually manage to talk them out of it.

The price is one thing- most types of takeaway around here cost about £50 for a family of four. £200+ per month on junk food is not something I can justify. (Fish and chips is the exception here- still pretty cheap. We’re in a seaside town so maybe they have to keep the costs down so the tourists will continue to buy it!)

And I like junk food as much as the next person but at my age, it doesn’t make my body feel very good so I have become the boring person who would much rather eat something made from scratch with lots of veg.

Ellie56 · 03/02/2024 19:58

I guarantee EVERYONE in the class is NOT having a take away this weekend.

It's just what kids say to guilt trip you into doing what they want.

AlwaysGinPlease · 03/02/2024 20:01

Every weekend either Friday or Saturday but this weekend both as early as we have been so busy. We cook from scratch most nights using a meal delivery service and so we love a treat. Adult DC have all left home, it's just us two so not terribly expensive.

DottieMoon · 03/02/2024 20:04

I don’t know anyone who has them weekly!

We have them once or at the moment twice a month. Twice is if we have friends or family staying

thatneverhappened · 03/02/2024 20:04

@Catsandcuddles thanks! Not a fan of nasi goreng but my blood pressure isn’t great so I do prefer fakeaways if it’s not possible to find something healthier at a takeaway. I have the bored of lunch air fryer book and it’s pretty good- haven’t honestly used my slow cooker since getting my ninja but must be missing out!

CeeJay81 · 03/02/2024 20:04

No. Can't afford it every weekend. Used to do it fortnightly, now it's once a month. Wasn't so bad when kids were little but now my 14 year old ds eats more than me, plus price rises too. Its just become too expensive.

Icantbedoingwithit · 03/02/2024 20:05

We probably do yes.

ContinentalBreakfast · 03/02/2024 20:08

We get one every 2-3 weeks. Usually fish and chips or pizza. Chinese and Indian takeaways are more of a rare treat because they are so much more expensive.

Wigtopia · 03/02/2024 20:33

No way every week!!! Sometimes we will go 3 or 4 months without a takeaway. I love cooking so don’t see it as a chore, and really enjoy it. DH has 3 amazing super fast dishes up his sleeve for when I’m too busy, so it’s rare that we do it. Combination of cost, health reasons but also we find that the idea of a take away is usually better than the reality!!

therealcookiemonster · 03/02/2024 20:37

I am trying to eat better so trying not to (used order a lot of food for delivery before). but I still end up ordering every week or every other week (although not necessarily on a wkend)

Judellie · 03/02/2024 20:41

No. We used to get fish and chips every week but stopped. I think we've been once in the last three months.
We went out today to a Morrisons cafe and ate there but only because I'd won a £20 Morrisons voucher.
If we cycle to McDonalds we might have something to eat or just a coffee when we get there.
Don't eat out/get takeaways that much actually, it gets expensive.

Nasi Goreng is just Indonesian for fried rice!
You might like one of the authentic versions. Not the bland, overly-soy sauced mess popping up in random pubs / recipes from BBC Good Food and other generic recipe sites that don't specialise in Asian cuisine.

To answer your question OP we have a takeaway every week.

WonderingAboutThus · 03/02/2024 20:51

No. We do often have a "worse food" day out of laziness but that is more often deep freezer pizzas or hotdogs or french fries in our own oven than take-out food.

Dymaxion · 03/02/2024 20:53

Fish and chips if we go to the seaside, maybe 4 or 5 times a year.

Chinese, maybe twice a year.

mizzow · 03/02/2024 21:04

Not every week maybe twice a month. Unless it's a curry I usually cook something for myself as I find takeaways is are generally a bit disappointing.
We do eat out once or twice most weekends though, usually brunch or lunch.
