Do you generally always get a takeaway at the weekend?

We are finding it just getting a little expensive to do every weekend. I'm trying to do little takeaway meals to make it exciting but according to my 15 year old EVERYONE in his class get a takeaway at the weekend. Surely not.

We're less likely to get one at the weekend. We usually cave mid week (not every week ofc) when we both get in late from work and have had stressful days, and have to get a 4yo bathed and to bed and get all the work gear/packups done for the next day.

Yes, Saturday night is fish and chips night in our house.

I cook the fish fingers on the grill at home and do some baked beans or mushy peas in the microwave while DH trots along to the chippy (just 5 minutes walk away) for the chips. That way it isn't too expensive.

We do like the odd curry and there is a good local restaurant which does takeaway but that is a much more expensive option, so I guess we only do that two or three times a year.

Love this!!!

We've been known to get a bag of chips to go with a homemade curry, sounds odd but is bloody lovely 😍 and like you say, only a few quid for the chips.

No. Used to be a monthly Payday special for the kids but dont bother anymore.

Not a fan of takeaway food, it tastes like crap, the quality isnt great and is expensive. Even the best takeaways locally (and there are a LOT!) are not as nice as proper food made at home. For the same price we can go to the local pub and get a proper meal, and it is more of an event than sitting eating greasy rubbish in the lounge.

maddiemookins16mum · 03/02/2024 22:51

We used to get one the first weekend after payday, not anymore. About 4 times a year now.

ToxicOstrich · 03/02/2024 22:58

I get one every Payday. Couldn't afford every weekend and it's something for me and my 5yo to look forward to. He chooses what we have.

People can get takeaways and eat in a restaurant too. Sweeping generalization there about all takeout being crap and greasy 🤣

Ironingpile · 03/02/2024 23:16

We used to but can’t afford them now. They are very expensive. I’m seeing what you all do instead of a takeaway as it might give me some good ideas.

Actually these days a lot of people cant afford a takeaway OR to eat out .....Sweeping generalization there about all people having that kind of disposable income.

That makes me feel old. I sometimes used to buy a bag of chips on the way home from school. 5p.

Friday DH goes out for an early drink with friends. If I've had the grandchildren and am tired, he picks up a big bag of chips a mushy peas and a gravy. I throw frozen fish into the air fryer for him. I enjoy chips and gravy.

We used to get a Chinese but there's always a lot left over with two people.

We do go out for lunch sometimes.

Jeannie88 · 04/02/2024 00:29

Couple of times a month for DC, we don't have the same and cook our own meals.

coxesorangepippin · 04/02/2024 02:49

Very rarely

Eat out roughly once very other week

queenmeadhbh · 04/02/2024 07:39

Takeaway once a month, usually payday weekend. But we don’t do proper cooking at the weekend really.
Friday = frozen pizzas
saturday = something in oven or air fryer, like breaded chicken or fish and oven chips and veg
sunday = either mini roast (like a chicken, roasties and some veg and gravy) or something like eggs chips and beans

then actual cooking mon-thurs

What other tales of "but everyone else does it" tales has he tried to spin you?

It was pretty obvious that the poster meant 'People who get a takeaway don't necessarily always get takeaways- they may eat out too'. Not 'Everyone in the world can afford to get takeaways and eat out'.

Justrolledmyeyesoutloud · 04/02/2024 08:18

Had one for the last 3 saturdays but probably won't have another one for agee. Been doing a lot of work in the house so come Saturday evening, we are too knackered to think about cooking

SiobahnRoy · 04/02/2024 08:23

We never get takeaways, eat out a couple of times a month.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 04/02/2024 08:40

Maybe 3 times a year here for takeaway.

Eating out in a restaurant happens maybe once a week when we are away on holidays and other than that only for a very special occasion. Eg I think we went to celebrate GCSE results.

Café very rare too. Unless on holiday where obviously the rules state that you must have an ice cream a day.

Just all gets so expensive doesn't it. A good Indian takeaway for the 5 of us can be in the region of £80 so definitely can't be a weekly thing and even pizzas are expensive and nowhere near as good as dh's home made ones.

barkymcbark · 04/02/2024 09:26

Very rarely have a take away. Went to the chippy the other day. 2x large haddock, 2x small chips and 2x cans of pop was over £20 Confused sod that.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 04/02/2024 09:46

One of our local pubs does amazing cod and chips for £15. On Fridays it does a "2 for 1" offer which is a real bargain.

Snackpocket · 04/02/2024 09:55

We tend to have fish and chips once a month when we go to see DH’s grandparents. Maybe we might get a kebab or pizza once every 1-2 months, curry or Chinese less often. Takeaways just don’t seem like good value anymore, I’d rather an M&S gastro pub meal deal. Mind you we did just get a McDonald’s breakfast this morning but not done that in ages. DH is hungover and started talking about it and made me want one!

FluffyDiplodocus · 04/02/2024 09:56

We get a curry at payday weekend, otherwise we just buy something nice for us to have for dinner on Saturday night when the kids are in bed 😊 I don’t think we could afford a weekly takeaway!

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 04/02/2024 10:05

Very rarely.

Newtrix · 04/02/2024 10:06

Greensleevevssnotnose · 03/02/2024 17:08

No, we had a full English delivered this morning though as hangover was kicking our butts.

Edited

This sounds amazing! Did not know that was a thing, very jealous.

CornedBeef451 · 04/02/2024 10:14

No, we have a takeaway about 4 times a year.

Weekly seems excessive and I don't think I know anyone who does that. I think your DC is winding you up!
