Do you generally always get a takeaway at the weekend?

We are finding it just getting a little expensive to do every weekend. I'm trying to do little takeaway meals to make it exciting but according to my 15 year old EVERYONE in his class get a takeaway at the weekend. Surely not.

We rarely get takeaway, but we go out for dinner at least once a week, and usually a second meal out (breakfast or lunch at a cafe).

We're pretty well off, though (although not by MN standards probably, neither of us earns 6 figures!).

We probably get 2 a week on average. We live in a bog city so it's more like getting restaurant food delivered than a big standard Chinese. It's expensive but we can afford it.

Edited

Good point. Am in a big city also, probably makes all the difference choice and quality-wise.

Honestly, it's a habit we started during Covid to support our favourite (non chain) restaurants to get them through and it has persisted. I've asked the family to choose a fake away from the pinch of nom books but they say they won't be as good. Since we can afford it I keep doing it but I really do need to put my foot down soon

Some of the fakeaways are actually pretty good you would be surprised. The PON Singapore nasi goreng is really good!

I also follow the bored of lunch Instagram page which is slow cooker and air fryer recipes and there are some really tasty meals.

I live in the biggest city in the UK and could get any takeaway I like any time of day. But I choose not too because it's money down the drain. And so enviornmentally unfriendly when you factor in the delivery.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 03/02/2024 19:12

no, never. Until recently we lived rurally so there weren't any nearby.

DH and I moved to a town last year, but still don't get one. We're just not in the habit. However, I would like a night off from cooking occasionally. DH does all the laundry (Inc ironing) and I do all the cooking. Just a heat at home pizza would be great every couple of weeks

MolkosTeenageAngst · 03/02/2024 19:12

Not every weekend, no. Usually I get takeaway a couple of times a month, often at the weekend but sometimes on a weekday, I don’t really have any rules about it and although usually I get it a couple of times a month there are times I’ll get it twice in a week too!

trulyunruly01 · 03/02/2024 19:12

We used to every Saturday. Then I worked out we were spending over £200 a month. We have a big holiday later this year to save for.
Now we choose a 'takeaway' each Monday and spend the week researching how to make it ourselves the following Saturday. I buy the ingredients on a Friday and try to get everyone involved in preparing it.
Tonight we have just had Indian all set out like buffet. I reckon £15.
Last week we had Chinese, making the sweet and sour chicken Hong Kong style was a hoot, I reckon less than £20 all in.
Week before that it was doner kebabs.
We've already decided next week will be fish and chips and we're going to use the batter recipe we made for the Chinese to produce really crispy battered sausages for the no fish people. And have pickled onions left over from Xmas and curry sauce with it.

No! About once every other month.

HappyAsASandboy · 03/02/2024 19:13

We have a takeaway about every 3 months I think.

I don't count McDonalds while out in this though! Is McDonald's a takeout?!

Gowlett · 03/02/2024 19:15

Rarely. It’s so expensive here. We’re more likely to pick up something from a cafe / deli in town & bring it home. Like a salad bowl / falafel / posh sambo. Or do a homemade pizza.

theduchessofspork · 03/02/2024 19:16

When the kids were little we did on a Friday (almost always curry) because we didn’t go out so much.

Now they are older we get out more, so fairly rare now - once a month perhaps

VampireWeekday · 03/02/2024 19:16

Once a month, on payday. Roast dinner is weekend treat food over here.

Betsylee · 03/02/2024 19:19

Very rarely now, find them soo expensive, have had a few bad ones and prefer to cook myself, husband enjoys cooking too so he'll help out.
I would buy a supermarket reheat meal if I couldn't be bothered to cook a curry with a curry sauce! Can't believe how much fish and chips is too, ridiculous prices!:

fetchacloth · 03/02/2024 19:22

Yes.
I live alone so it gives me a break from cooking and washing up which is tedious for one person.

lotsofpeoplenametheirswords · 03/02/2024 19:23

Every Wednesday we have one! Weekends are for trying out new, long winded, lovely recipes with fresh food from the butcher and grocer because we actually have the time!

whoscoatsthatjacket2012 · 03/02/2024 19:26

We maybe get 6 a year.

TheChosenTwo · 03/02/2024 19:30

We average one takeaway a week. Dh does all the cooking but will frequently opt for a takeaway one of the weekend nights.

In London they mostly ride motorcycles. I work next to a deliveroo kitchen and all day long it is motorycles buzzing in and out to deliver rubbishy food to within a 3 mile radius. All that petrol!

I like this approach.

Squirrelsbite · 03/02/2024 19:38

Yes , chippy on a Saturday night
only 2 of us tho

Tessisme · 03/02/2024 19:39

We have one every 2-3 weeks. Chinese tonight😋

successismyonlymotherfuckingoptionfailuresnot · 03/02/2024 19:40

Unfortunately we only have one takeaway so fish and chips every week would get a bit dull! I do love the break from cooking so I drive 45 minutes to marks and Spencer's and get one of their takeaways every now and then

Chickenwing2 · 03/02/2024 19:40

Yes & we often get takeaway fri, sat & Sunday.
