Do you generally always get a takeaway at the weekend?

We are finding it just getting a little expensive to do every weekend. I'm trying to do little takeaway meals to make it exciting but according to my 15 year old EVERYONE in his class get a takeaway at the weekend. Surely not.

We live very rurally. Takeaways don't deliver this far from town and it's too far to drive and collect one. I really miss takeaway Chinese. We usually only have one if we go on holiday in the UK and stay somewhere nearer to civilisation. I must confess that it is one of the first things I check is available when we book a holiday place.

I have never got a takeaway in my life (and I'm really old!).

RicePuddingWithCinnamon · 03/02/2024 18:01

I have one a month.
5 years ago I had one a week.
Bloody cost of living crisis!

ProfessorPipsqueak · 03/02/2024 18:02

No, every time I got one I'd just end up disappointed that the food didn't match up to the price tag. The teens eat out quite often with friends so get their junk food fix then.

You should try it.

Jewelanemone · 03/02/2024 18:03

Yes, every weekend - either Indian or Chinese. We're lucky enough to have several very good restaurants nearby who have takeaway menus. Just off to get a curry now, in fact 😋

WombatChocolate · 03/02/2024 18:04

Probably twice a year. Might buy a supermarket ready meal once a month.

Takeaway is expensive for what it is. We don’t tend to get it, but when friends invite us out for a meal, or one our friend groups invites one of us, we like to say yes. Realsie a restaurant is more expensive, but I’d rather eat out once or twice a month with a ladies group of old friends and get the social aspect of going out and being with friends, that just having a takeaway with my family.

Some people dint seem to go out much or see other people. Perhaos their treat is takeaway with family.

Personal choice though isn’t it…but can see that if a takeaway costs £30 for a family of 4 (know it could be more or less) that’s quite a chunk each week, when probably a family meal could be cooked for a quarter if that.

Mistymornin · 03/02/2024 18:05

Once every couple of months, normally a Chinese or Indian.

Not even a bag of chips from the chippy?

mondaytosunday · 03/02/2024 18:05

Friday night was takeaway night. Now we go weeks without it.

hanahsaunt · 03/02/2024 18:06

Once or twice a year at most

We did last year until I worked out we were spending nearly £250 a month on takeaways 😳 so we've cut down and only had one in January. Will be getting a curry tomorrow night though but hopefully that will be it for February...

Something similar happened to me when I figured out the cost! I went from eating takeaways multiple times a week to now having them about once every 1-2 months. Haven’t had one since December.

It was primarily for health reasons but also because I looked at my monzo account and it showed me I’d spent over a thousand on deliveroo alone within a year or so. But I also used justeat and Uber even more and haven’t looked at what I spent on them. So realistically in total I think I spent a few thousand on takeaways between 2020 and 2021 - blaming it on lockdowns!

My health and bank balance are better for it Now I’ve scaled back on them.

I would add that I don’t have kids though and that may make a difference. Perhaps cooking for a big family is more tiring and therefore people are more likely going to use takeaways more frequently? But I know at least some of my friends who have teens don’t have weekly takeaways.

Awrite · 03/02/2024 18:08

Nope, never to rarely. Nothing to do with money, they are just terribly unhealthy.

AlltheFs · 03/02/2024 18:10

No. We get a few a year! We live rurally though and it’s a PITA to collect them and no deliveries.

We do buy occasional cheat meals from Cook instead of cooking from scratch or supermarket pizza. Probably do that 3-4 times a month.

Tennagers talk a lot of shite @hungrythechicken

LadyKenya · 03/02/2024 18:11

No. I have no interest in spending good money on mediocre food.

AhBiscuits · 03/02/2024 18:12

Quite rarely now because I can't eat very much anymore. I do tend to make something very quick and easy though, a bit of a break from proper cooking.

Funderthighs · 03/02/2024 18:13

We have one about twice a year so it’s a real treat. It’s just not something we’ve ever done on a regular basis.

PrawnDumplings · 03/02/2024 18:13

No. They are always disappointing.

TitaniasAss · 03/02/2024 18:14

We probably get about three or four takeaways a year. We can't afford any more. I love cooking anyway.

freespirit333 · 03/02/2024 18:18

Hardly ever! Once every…3 months I think, at a push. We have “pizza night” every Friday but that’s supermarket pizzas.

JustRobbedAnOldMan · 03/02/2024 18:20

No, always regret it and feel greasy after plus household of takeaway poos and farts plus waste of money plus fattest country in Europe.

DinosaurOfFire · 03/02/2024 18:20

At least once a week, usually on a friday- sometimes twice a week depending on the week.

Netcam · 03/02/2024 18:22

Never. For a treat we might have decent pizza that we heat up ourselves. We really like the Crosta and Mollica ones we get from Ocado.

LuciferRising · 03/02/2024 18:23

We use to have a few a week but now once a month. Mainly for health and taste reasons. Tend to make homemade pizza Friday nights. Vegetarian yuk sung today. And if I'm too tired we have homemade curries in the freezer.

HawkersEast · 03/02/2024 18:23

Yes, usually Friday and Saturday nights, or we eat out at least one of those nights.
