Story after story now of conscription being needed. I was thoroughly convinced that this is just scaremongering but the number of senior figures coming out again today warning us to prepare it really feels like they are getting us used to the idea. Also in the papers today the US is moving some of its nuclear stockpile to the UK. Getting bit nervous now I have to admit.

Maybe it's a good thing. Even after a pandemic, people seem to have become even more entitled and selfish. Humanity needs a serious kick up the arse (in some parts of the world anyway), you just have to look at some of the threads on here

Tbh I think there is an argument for a years maybe apprentice -pay level conscription at 18 or after the end of full time school. I think it should be a choice between military type service or community service, care work etc. would give kids a skill, get them used to work and alleviate staffing crises in various industries. And it might humble some of them whilst empowering others. Not sure they should be put in the front line however-but at least we'd be better prepared if it ever came to it.

It will not happen. It was one military officer using a way of highlighting the issues the army and other forces face. The Tories have run down or reduced the military capability every time they have been in government since Suez.

Most young people these days would not be able to cope even one day in the army let alone on the frontline and there is no longer a national service to give people the basics.

It would be a pointless exercise as people would need months of training to be even remotely useful...

This is just done to scaremonger and get more funding for the armed forces.

I think this is what it’s all about too.

What puzzles me is that some years ago I distinctly remember the same people telling us that potential conflicts of the future wouldn’t need high numbers of personnel as it would involve a different kind of warfare (talking about attacks on IT infrastructure for instance, rather than bloody battles on the ground I suppose)

There will always be some news story for people to latch on to to give themselves something to panic about, some people will get on with their lives, some people will lock themselves away because they have hit the panic button and some will say it is a conspiracy spread by chimps living in the Sahara who speak Belgian, there will be another story soon and this one will be chip paper

I agree it’s mainly about increased funding for the military. This might be to try to encourage the public to think about spending priorities around the GE.

That said, obviously if there is a war in which our country faces an existential threat, our communities would rightly expect everyone to do everything they can to protect us all. I profoundly disagree that the ‘youth of today’ wouldn’t or couldn’t step up. Of course, there are wasters in every generation, but many of the ‘youth’ that I know are truly impressive people

As I'm filled with menopausal mood swings and at the stage in life where I've no f*cks left to give, I'd love a chance to channel all the rage I've held at my ex husband abandoning my son and leaving me owed over 100k in child maintenance into something.... and as I've lost most of my pension in my divorce and have eff all to live on in the future ... why not?

I wish I had your optimism but I agree with OP. I think our flabby babyed selfish young people are making it more likely to happen, not less! How easy are we as a target?! Compared to eg Ukraine where civilians were instantly willing and able to fight to defend themselves and each other.
We would be forced to roll over and submit in no time (like Afghanistan sadly).
Plus we're also so addicted to TikTok etc that any would be invaders would just need to post a few videos and we'd be out protesting on their side against our own people.

You are right to be concerned about the conflict.

I would not however, be concerned about conscription. You can't make anyone do anything this days due to self-identity, a million different diagnosed 'conditions' and general entitlement. They live in tik tok land.

Would never be reintroduced even without the hard facts of what modern warfare is.

I did my university thesis on conscription back in the 1980s which was around the time that countries which still had conscription/military service were starting to move away from it and even then it was a totally accepted fact that the UK would never reintroduce something that they'd been one of the first states to abolish.

There isn't enough money to train, kit out, and look after the professionals they've got, let alone setting up schemes for however many conscripts there would be.

And one of the main moral reasons for abolishing it in the first place was a vague (at the time) recognition that putting a weapon into someone's hands when that person doesn't want it, or isn't psychologically suited to holding it, probably isn't the best idea.
