Story after story now of conscription being needed. I was thoroughly convinced that this is just scaremongering but the number of senior figures coming out again today warning us to prepare it really feels like they are getting us used to the idea. Also in the papers today the US is moving some of its nuclear stockpile to the UK. Getting bit nervous now I have to admit.

The point is that it would give them work and life experience. As a care manager most of the new staff I get coming through-if I get any at all-are frankly unskilled and low calibre. They need babying anyway. At least this way I'd get volume and it might actually sort some of them out. And those that are decent would get a bit of work experience and a decent reference which would help them go on to do whatever they want to do. The biggest reason kids don't get jobs now is no experience-despite qualifications. This would fix that.
More military type service, (or road fixing/ environmental work/cleaning at the hospital-whatever it is), would at least give them some level of physical fitness, get them used to following routines, team work, responsibility, all the stuff people complain that kids aren't equipped with anymore...and it might just solve a few societal problems and labour shortages whilst we're at it.
It's a year of someone's life-no big deal. And I think it would be productive, helpful for everyone and improving for the kids themselves.

Road fixing, cleaning at the hospital should be decently paid jobs. Same as care work, Maybe more people would be willing to do those jobs if the pay was better. Farming it out as NS is a terrible idea.

GintyMcGinty · 27/01/2024 09:28

It's not priming for conscription.

It's military figures lobbying the UK government to increase spending on the military instead of making cuts.

They are using the worst possible scaremongering on the public to push for bigger budgets.

The youth of today are mostly awesome.

Better educated, they don't drink or smoke or take drugs in the same volume as previous generations, they care about social issues, care about equality, diversity and inclusion, care about climate change.

Your post is ageist bile.

Ugh yes I feel the same about middle aged and older too

Ugh from me too what a poster.

I wonder how many wars they’ve fought in.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

'not in my name'

what do you propose to do about it then?

You say 'war is abhorrent'

you think the rest of us like it?
Don't you think everyone else would rather spend the money on the NHS/schools etc?

conscription is absolutely pointless these days, it's not going to happen.

I have no idea what you mean about what l ‘intend’ to do.

I’m 60 years old and live in the north. What would you suggest l do? I could go on a march, or even organise one, but I’m too unwell.

Our 4 dc would be conscientious objectors. And no l don’t think everyone does think like me. War is about profit and old men sending young men to die. Let’s see the generals and politicians on the front line first.

I went in loads of CND marches in the 80’s. Why would l fucking want conscription?

White older men cause wars. Not younger men, women and children.

fonfusedm · 27/01/2024 09:34

Ok, official Boomer here ( aged 62). If some of the comments on this thread were being thrown at us - the first generation in a long time who did not experience conscription and war on our own soil - we would be hitting MNHQ hard and fast at the ageism .
Ageism apparently only goes one way & often it's those labelling the young as snowflakes who complain to MNs about all the dreadful ageist comments 🤔

Strangermanger · 27/01/2024 09:35

@Shadowsindarkplaces do you write for the Daily Mail? Sounds like it with all that hate.

As a 47yr old who grew up in the ‘grunge era’ the middle-aged hated us then. Ditto with punks. Ditto with rock and rollers. It’s embarrassing that when people hit middle aged they just perpetuate generational hate. Grow up.

I’m sure Ukrainians find it abhorrent too, it’s not like they instigated it

Plus an attacker doesn’t just say ok they do all kinds of brutal things which are abhorrent

I agree. If everyone was like my soon adult ds or dd and their friends this planet would be a great place to live tbh.

crumblingschools · 27/01/2024 09:36

If most posters on here are parents we need to be looking at ourselves if the younger generation are so useless.

And I for one wouldn’t want to see my teenage son conscripted

And during the pandemic most of our youngsters masked up and tested regularly, whereas so many adults on here were going on how they couldn’t possibly put a mask on and shove a cotton bud up their nose to test for COVID. Not sure any of them have the right to criticise the youth of today

fonfusedm · 27/01/2024 09:37

I’m not in the UK and we’ve had the same. We’re not laughing at it like you seem to do though. Sometimes I think people are absolutely clueless, because it’s so far from their own cushy bubble. I can’t say I’m worried, but of course you need to prepare yourself mentally and make sure you have prepped enough water and food etc so that you can stay at home for a couple of weeks without bothering anyone else. It’s a requirement from our Government (Scandinavia) and we have lists of what we HAVE to have at home if war or crisis happen.

Don't, we will have another run on toilet paper soon

Wow, some weird young person hating on this thread.
Imagine, young people not being up for wanting to kill actual living human beings and getting screamed at as part of the weird military brainwashing machine. How unreasonable of them. How awful. How dare they.

Exactly. And whilst the avocado/charger comment was very funny I find those here almost willing our young people into armed combat to " toughen them up" quite sickening. I love my young adult DC and the prospect of them, or anyone, being forced to put their life on the line for the older generation horrific.

if they are priming for anything it’s to encourage “us” to be happy for increased spending on defence.

Exactly.

That kind of warfare is over - the nations youth is not needed at scale. There will be increased recruitment as part of extra cash, but the forces are smaller than ever so you’d expect that.

I love your post. So true.

MorningSunshineSparkles · 27/01/2024 09:42

@GreatGateauxsby thats exactly what soldiers are. Cannon fodder. They’re not important, the governments know they’re going to die, that’s all they’re put there to do. The fact you don’t realise that is quite worrying.

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 27/01/2024 09:43

It’s interesting so many of you are being so rude about the younger generation, when they were raised by people like you. Take some responsibility, eh? Irony at its finest.

Humour...I said 'tongue in cheek' I grew up in 80s, new romantics ,punks, kids, rockers etc..still live Gary Numan..🤣
AIBU- teacher shouted at DS, should I complain
AIBU- DS needs a phone so I know where he is..

not the kids that are the problem is it...

Newchapterbeckons · 27/01/2024 09:44

I would be interested to know the position of Labour - and their thoughts given they are supposedly so ahead in the polls. This is most definitely going to be their problem.

Toughen them up🤮 l like my gentle, socially aware dc. I’d hate them to be toughened up.

@GintyMcGinty 🙈🙈🙈
I should have made it clearer... It was light-hearted / not serious post 🥴

The OP was just so dramatic about something I just really don't think this will ever come to pass...if only due to logistics.
