Story after story now of conscription being needed. I was thoroughly convinced that this is just scaremongering but the number of senior figures coming out again today warning us to prepare it really feels like they are getting us used to the idea. Also in the papers today the US is moving some of its nuclear stockpile to the UK. Getting bit nervous now I have to admit.

Thank goodness for Mumsnet, the collective wisdom here can always be relied on in matters of national security.

Yes, some posts are truly bizarre.

Women have equality now and as such have been on the frontline for quite some time.
They won’t be exempt

While it is incredibly unlikely there'll ever be an invasion of the UK, Brits might be needed to defend other NATO countries but in that situation I very much doubt they'd use conscription. But if the UK were invaded, then there's no point in being against war, you don't have a choice in the matter, you can't just flee - borders would likely be closed, and then it'd be a case of fighting or being slaughtered (or worse, as we've seen in Ukraine)

I'm in Finland, Russia is always a background threat (though thankfully much smaller now thanks to NATO). My son will be conscripted, my daughter might if the law changes in the next few years like they've been discussing. In the event of war, my partner will be called back from the reserves and as a civilian I'd have to do my part too (total defence - everyone has a part to play, whether its military or labour or food supplies). When you live next to a country like Russia you don't get so naïve about pacifism - the vast majority are willing to fight unlike in Western Europe.

I’m in Sweden and we sometimes see Russian fighter aircraft violating Swedish airspace. The Swedish air force quickly chasing them away protecting our borders.

Natsku · 27/01/2024 16:31

Yeah they like violating our airspace too, testing to see if defence is still on the ball

pointythings · 27/01/2024 16:34

Wow, so maany people on here being vile about young people.

Ask yourselves whether you would do any better if you were conscripted. You wouldn't.

Naptrappedmummy · 27/01/2024 16:49

Being discussed on LBC

MixedCouple · 27/01/2024 17:25

Needed for Putin, who is loosing a war in Ukraine..... Why are civilians needed for a war that has been lost by the "enemy" apparently..... Interesting.

MixedCouple · 27/01/2024 17:26

This is a norm for many countries outside of Europe. USA is a big criminal in this respect. So bit hypocritical to co plain about Russia when the "powers that be" are free to bully and intimidate other countries.
Hypocrisy.

So the meme is:
Conscription = being vile about young people

During Covid it was:
Children = vectors of deadly disease
Going to school = killing grannies.
Leaving your house to buy milk = selfish murderer

It's social media i guess.

Hotpinkangel19 · 27/01/2024 18:38

crumblingschools · 27/01/2024 09:36

If most posters on here are parents we need to be looking at ourselves if the younger generation are so useless.

And I for one wouldn’t want to see my teenage son conscripted

And during the pandemic most of our youngsters masked up and tested regularly, whereas so many adults on here were going on how they couldn’t possibly put a mask on and shove a cotton bud up their nose to test for COVID. Not sure any of them have the right to criticise the youth of today

Edited

Exactly tjis.

Flaskfan · 27/01/2024 18:39

I'm in my 40s. I suspect many of my generation would not have been mad keen on the idea of conscription back in the 90s. Especially as many of our parents, if not hippies, were definitely influenced by anti war ideology. I was def anti war, as were my floppy haired, weed smoking grungy friends. I wouldn't even do my own laundry, so would I fuck have gone to fight a war. And wear a uniform? Fuck off.

The rave kids, fuelled by weekends of wizz, might have been up for it. But I don't think many of us would've wanted to do much.

VinegarTrio · 27/01/2024 18:55

I’m also in my 40s and marvelling that anyone is imagining that the current generation or young people are somehow uniquely useless.

Not that anyone is getting conscripted!

Is it time to break out the Winter's Tale quote?

"I would there were no age between 10 and 23..."

But Poland is in NATO. If Russia invaded Poland NATO would fire the nukes.

Would they really. And remind me exactly who ‘NATO’ is again?

They’re making out they can’t recruit people into the military - total lie.
The government has cut back on military numbers vastly over the past 20 years - it is always recruiting.
They’ve changed pensions and expectations and taken away the morale boosts that drew people to join, but don’t be thinking they can’t recruit.
They CHOSE to cut numbers.

The numbers have been cut

But they're failing to recruit even up to the new (reduced) ceilings.

For which many blame the introduction of Capita into the process.

Anathema to many on MN, and perverse as it may seem, but recruitment was rather more buoyant during the recent active operations in Iraq and Afghanistan

We wouldn't necessarily "fire the nukes" but we would be obliged (Article 5) to respond

If Article 5 failed, then NATO would indeed be toothless

I've been teaching 20 years or so. There were definitely more kids planning to join the army than in recent years. Always the army; never the RAF or navy. In the past, it did seem to be the lads in lower sets, who couldn't wait to leave school. Often the ones who hated following rules, which used to completely baffle me. But then, I guess they saw school rules as arbitrary. Some of those kids may well have had long careers by now. I wonder if they did.

NATO is North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. Set up after WW2.
