Story after story now of conscription being needed. I was thoroughly convinced that this is just scaremongering but the number of senior figures coming out again today warning us to prepare it really feels like they are getting us used to the idea. Also in the papers today the US is moving some of its nuclear stockpile to the UK. Getting bit nervous now I have to admit.

Wow, some weird young person hating on this thread.
Imagine, young people not being up for wanting to kill actual living human beings and getting screamed at as part of the weird military brainwashing machine. How unreasonable of them. How awful. How dare they.

How unreasonable for people to criticise the british military whilst living under the blanket of security that they provide😂

The kids I teach were obsessed with the idea yesterday. 'Are we going to have to go and fight a war, Miss?' Couple of my boys were pretty up for the idea, but that was 2 or 3 out of the 130 kids I taught.

My grandfather fought in ww2. He was 18. Don't know if he was called up or chose to go, but apart from the immediate threat to the country, his generation were less educated,on the whole, and more likely to believe authority.

Many of the kids I've taught over the years have covered war poetry, such does a pretty effective job of putting them off going to war themselves.

And of course, if battle were like classrooms:
The adhd kids charging off with a gun, before finishing listening to instructions.
The add kids wandering off to the wrong war.
The autistic kids unable to cope with noise, or other people.
The ODD kids refusing to follow ANY instructions.
The refusal, by a large majority, to do anything until they've finished brushing their hair.
The turning up late to battle, because they thought it was in a different field.
The complaining. 'My mate in a different battalion says they get to have ribbons on their helmets.'

Other European countries are preparing. Is it a case of building up enough collective force so Russia doesn’t attempt anything?
The navy is under staffed and better pay would encourage more to join. And we need a strong navy to protect shipping as most of what we have is imported
We don’t need a war on our soil to dramatically change our lives. If the global supply lines are seriously interrupted we’d be facing energy, food, medical supplies and many other shortages
At the moment we should be campaigning to keep the last blast furnace open so we can produce steel. Yes steel is needed for weapons but it’s also needs for medical supplies, food packaging, white goods, building and many other things.

38 % of the population are overweight
25 % of the population are obese.
It is unrealistic after a decade of no regulation of the food industry by this government and no funding for safer roads allowing people to cycle and walk that they expect us to be well enough to fight.

Mirrorpillar · 27/01/2024 08:29

Somehow, Kyle, with his 2 gcses, 3 teeth, and comprehensive collection of grey joggers, is safe.

I say this kindly as I myself served for 12 years...this describes a fair amount of recruits, many of whom go on to have successful careers in the military. Do you think everyone who signs up has a degree and is from wealthy families? It's been the case for decades that signing on is a way out of poverty in some areas.

It wouldn’t take that long to change if people were training or fighting

The DM has over egged the pudding as usual and has made the whole thing sound ridiculous

piscofrisco · 27/01/2024 08:35

@NuNameNuMe actually I think it should be compulsory for all prospective MP's of any stripe to do a years community or military work before taking up their role as well (unless they have had a career in that field already). But that's a different discussion...

It will not happen. It was one military officer using a way of highlighting the issues the army and other forces face. The Tories have run down or reduced the military capability every time they have been in government since Suez.

I’m not in the UK and we’ve had the same. We’re not laughing at it like you seem to do though. Sometimes I think people are absolutely clueless, because it’s so far from their own cushy bubble. I can’t say I’m worried, but of course you need to prepare yourself mentally and make sure you have prepped enough water and food etc so that you can stay at home for a couple of weeks without bothering anyone else. It’s a requirement from our Government (Scandinavia) and we have lists of what we HAVE to have at home if war or crisis happen.

Of course it’s not just about sending us to war, cyber attacks are morr likely. Where I am there are a couple of huge ones right now.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 27/01/2024 08:39

various countries have civil defence forces. For natural disasters, other kinds of national emergencies etc. And to protect the civilian population in times of war / armed conflict.

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.
”Conscription” isn’t necessarily about sending (unwilling) 19 year olds into active combat - which some posters seem to assume.

Coconutcheese · 27/01/2024 08:41

I be read that BJ said he would sign up of this happened ! The guy who hid in a fridge 😂😂😂

That must mean that Oliver with his A*A levels, dental braces and his collection of designer jeans is safe too.

Twas ever thus.

I fucking love young people and trust in them that they'd take to the streets and tell Rishi to lead by example first.

And Boris could be the first out of the trench.

In the words of Bruce Springsteen...next time, blind faith in your leaders will get you killed. Oooooo Arrrrrrrrr war....etc 🎵

You probably haven't got the Daily Mail and other papers in your country though making it laughable, if papers reported sensibly, people would take it more seriously.

The poster is saying the opposite. Kyle would sign up for his country. Oliver's daddy would make damn sure he found a get out clause for him not to get his hands dirty.

This is exactly why the US abolished conscription. The land of the free shuddered collectively (at the time) about non WASPS representing them in battle. Despite the WASPS being the first group to run and get a medical cert exonerating them.

CormorantStrikesBack · 27/01/2024 08:51

I’ve already seen a TikTok video from boris saying he supports it all, along the lines of “rah get out and fight, wish I was younger and could join in”. I commented that Carrie is young enough to be conscripted even if he’s far too old 😁

CormorantStrikesBack · 27/01/2024 08:51

And I agree that Kyle would probably make a great soldier

Northernsouloldies · 27/01/2024 08:52

if they are priming for anything it’s to encourage “us” to be happy for increased spending on defence.

This

mpsw · 27/01/2024 08:59

The reason for the rhetoric now is because of the effect of years of defence cuts

The military wants the government - and the people - to think about what the likely conflicts will be in the next 30 years or so, and to fund the Armed Forces to have the capability for those threats.

A revanchist Russia is the new card in the pack. If we ended up fighting in Europe, what would it be like? Would the British people respond as the Ukrainian ones have, and stand and fight? Do we really grasp the idea that if NATO countries - and that means nearly all of Europe - are attacked, we will be fighting?

Also we've just agreed to let the US station nukes here again. This helps show the reasoning why.

Ok, official Boomer here ( aged 62). If some of the comments on this thread were being thrown at us - the first generation in a long time who did not experience conscription and war on our own soil - we would be hitting MNHQ hard and fast at the ageism .

These young people we denigrate are our own children and grandchildren. So if you don’t like how they turned out , then look in the mirror.

Ifailed · 27/01/2024 09:03

There's a lot of sneering on this thread, presumably from people who would never dream of stepping forward to help defend their way of life.

The sabre-rattling is, of course, just the military angling for more funds and the likes of the hard-right daily mail wrapping it up in their version of 'patriotism' for some sensational headlines.

The truth is the risk of war in Europe is rising and will continue to rise with the rhetoric of Putin who has fought himself into a corner.

Keep an eye on the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

Wait, I thought we were being “primed” for aliens?

I hope so, we might finally get some sense spoken! This past few years have been crazy.
