Story after story now of conscription being needed. I was thoroughly convinced that this is just scaremongering but the number of senior figures coming out again today warning us to prepare it really feels like they are getting us used to the idea. Also in the papers today the US is moving some of its nuclear stockpile to the UK. Getting bit nervous now I have to admit.

We have an election coming up and before that a budget, they want to push this before Hunt gives away too much money to other things and policies are written by all the parties

user1984778379202 · 27/01/2024 09:07

Of course it could happen and it's naïve to think it wouldn't. It would be a last resort, but our armed forces are so depleted as a nation we don't have the numbers to fight our way of a paper bag as things stand. If Russia tries to invade Finland or even Sweden in retaliation for them joining NATO, under the NATO treaty, as an allied nation, we will be at war too. So conscription is a possibility.

I put this parody on another thread...lighthearted, of course, tongue firmly in cheek....I am not giving up the day job any time soon...🤣

ATTENSHUN!
GET INTO LINE YOU ORRIBLE LOT!!!

'Excuse me, sir, my mum says you can't shout at me'

AS I SAID GET IN LINE! RIGHT! YOU ARE HERE FOR 6 WEEKS BASIC TRAINING BEFORE DEPLOYMENT

'Ooo...where will we go? Will I need my bikini? I will need to book a tanning session!

NO SYKES, YOU ARE GOING TO FIGHT!

'Fight? fight?

YES PIKE! FIGHT!

'OH, my mum says I can't do that. It's bad for my anxiety!

SO WILL BEING INVADED PIKE!
WALKER! GET OFF YOUR PHONE!

My mum said I have to text to let her know where I am every hour..

PUT IT AWAY! RIGHT! MOVING ON, GO, AND COLLECT UNIFORMS FROM THE ROOM ON THE LEFT!

'Do you have any bigger Sir, this is a bit snug?

YOU NEED TO LOSE WEIGHT RYAN, IT WILL FIT PROPERLY IN A WEEK OR TWO! EXERCISE WILL GET THAT WEIGHT OFF!

'I can't lose weight sir, its who I am! Big and beautiful' I don't like exercise, I'll get my mum to write a note, you can't make me do it!

FFS!

'Sir, I don't like this one, I want to wear the womens uniform.'
YOU ARE A MAN, WEAR IT!
'You are being offensive. If I identify as a woman, then you need to provide me with womens uniform.
FFS! I GIVE UP! I QUIT! NATURAL SELECTION IS NEEDED NOT CONSCRIPTION!

I don't understand this or why so many people seem to be agreeing with it?

Why are you suggesting adults would be calling upon their mother's for trivial reasons?

Am I right in assuming everyone on this thread who is laughing at the younger generations would have been very happy and capable to kill and/or loose their own lives in conflict just because some tory bastard in his ivory tower says its time for you to do so? You wouldn't be scared? You wouldn't have any reservations?

I've maybe met two adults in my entire life who would behave in (a watered down version of) the way suggested here. If you're coming across a lot of them maybe we should be looking at the generation raising them?

Having said all that... maybe I just don't get the joke?

I’ve already seen a TikTok video from boris saying he supports it all, along the lines of “rah get out and fight, wish I was younger and could join in”. I commented that Carrie is young enough to be conscripted even if he’s far too old 😁

He's got enough offspring kicking around to create an army.

Ok, official Boomer here ( aged 62). If some of the comments on this thread were being thrown at us - the first generation in a long time who did not experience conscription and war on our own soil - we would be hitting MNHQ hard and fast at the ageism .

These young people we denigrate are our own children and grandchildren. So if you don’t like how they turned out , then look in the mirror.

Well said.

WinchSparkle80 · 27/01/2024 09:10

Is it not just the government prepping us for either raising taxes or not increasing the tax threshold because…. defence spending…?!

I think it should be a choice between military type service or community service, care work etc. would give (them) a skill, get them used to work and alleviate staffing crises in various industries. And it might humble some of them whilst empowering others.

All of this also applies to out of work Tory MPs, their SPADs, cronies and associates later this year.

Why should those industries be burdened by 18 yo toddlers? It's not their duty to teach them to 'adult'. They're struggling enough without being landed with that!!

Nick Ferrari LBC made me laugh he said something like. 'Conscription?? The generation that can't brush their teeth without tiktok

@Shadowsindarkplaces posts, Dads Army style hit the nail on the head.

id be no better. I'm not physically able, but I could do admin or look after the children if those going to fight.

I didn't get the joke either. Or more likely it's just not funny.

migigo · 27/01/2024 09:13

Not going to happen as far as full conscription but a 3-12 month national service is not necessarily a bad idea, potentially compulsory at 18 if not in education, employment or training, with an option of military or community.

Divinespark · 27/01/2024 09:14

Nofilteritwonthelp · 27/01/2024 06:56

Maybe it's a good thing. Even after a pandemic, people seem to have become even more entitled and selfish. Humanity needs a serious kick up the arse (in some parts of the world anyway), you just have to look at some of the threads on here

Why don't you send your child to fight in War that that those in charge would never do, and pretend it's for your freedom? Seriously, wake up.

Nw22 · 27/01/2024 09:14

Given the comments about young people on this thread no wonder they wouldn’t fight for you. Why would you fight for a generation who have sone nothing but take at your expense

bringsomewood · 27/01/2024 09:15

BobnLen · 27/01/2024 08:47

You probably haven't got the Daily Mail and other papers in your country though making it laughable, if papers reported sensibly, people would take it more seriously.

Fair enough, we don’t.

WolfFoxHare · 27/01/2024 09:15

fonfusedm · 27/01/2024 06:55

if they are priming for anything it’s to encourage “us” to be happy for increased spending on defence.

Yeah this. ‘We’re raising income tax to pay for increased defence spending. Don’t like it? Well the alternative is conscription!’

PupInAPram · 27/01/2024 09:16

The next war won't be won by boots on the ground. It will be won by superior weapons tech, coders and AI

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 27/01/2024 09:16

Not this shit again? Fuck that.

Let’s spend all our money on shit like this whilst the NHS and schools crumble.

Not in my name.

I said it on a previous thread. War is abhorrent m, conscription is disgusting.

That's what I think.

after giving Ukraine a shit ton of stuff (rightly so) it makes me wonder what we have left & how quickly we can replace it (are we even trying to??)

we don't appear to have been spending enough on defence, so we need to up our spending & get ourselves in a better situation.

Moro93 · 27/01/2024 09:18

Wow, I’ve never seen so many old, ageist, busybodies on one thread!

piscofrisco · 27/01/2024 09:18

The point is that it would give them work and life experience. As a care manager most of the new staff I get coming through-if I get any at all-are frankly unskilled and low calibre. They need babying anyway. At least this way I'd get volume and it might actually sort some of them out. And those that are decent would get a bit of work experience and a decent reference which would help them go on to do whatever they want to do. The biggest reason kids don't get jobs now is no experience-despite qualifications. This would fix that.
More military type service, (or road fixing/ environmental work/cleaning at the hospital-whatever it is), would at least give them some level of physical fitness, get them used to following routines, team work, responsibility, all the stuff people complain that kids aren't equipped with anymore...and it might just solve a few societal problems and labour shortages whilst we're at it.
It's a year of someone's life-no big deal. And I think it would be productive, helpful for everyone and improving for the kids themselves.

migigo · 27/01/2024 09:19

By the way, the military is a very good employer, young people (who can pass the medical) could do worse, better than drifting into dead end jobs. Don't know that much about the army, sounds like hard work, but the navy and airforce are great for engineering for instance, you can even do degrees, masters and other civilian qualifications etc. sponsored. I know quite a few serving and it's certainly not about killing people which some here seem to think, more about protecting others

Emmenelle · 27/01/2024 09:24

As the mother of an 18 year old DS, hearing the word conscription made my blood run cold

BoohooWoohoo · 27/01/2024 09:24

This is about getting more investment in defence and the armed forces.
This is completely unworkable if you think about it. Where are they going to get kit like uniforms ? Who is going to pay for the training and administration? How many exemptions would be needed for this in 2024? Eg single parents, people with disabilities, people with caring responsibilities (human and animal)If women aren’t conscripted then presumably identifying as a female would be an out? There’s not enough prisons and capacity in the law courts for refusers.

Mumoftwo1312 · 27/01/2024 09:25

Haha thank you for that @DancesWithBadgers ,my favourite was from the 1700s and is almost word for word what people are saying on this thread:

"Whither are the manly vigour and athletic appearance of our forefathers flown? Can these be their legitimate heirs? Surely, no; a race of effeminate, self-admiring, emaciated fribbles can never have descended in a direct line from the heroes of Potiers and Agincourt…"

Except maybe the emaciated part. Substitute chubby there.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow

'not in my name'

what do you propose to do about it then?

You say 'war is abhorrent'

you think the rest of us like it?
Don't you think everyone else would rather spend the money on the NHS/schools etc?

conscription is absolutely pointless these days, it's not going to happen.

bringsomewood · 27/01/2024 09:27

War aside, are you prepared for power and network outages? Because this is a more likely scenario.

And it is up to each and everyone to be prepared for that and not expect anyone else to help you. If anything you should be prepared to help others.

I know in the UK people seem to laugh this off. Where I live this is expected of us. It should come as no surprise if you wake up with no tap water or not being able to go to the shops.
