If you wear jeans almost every day, how often do you wash them?

I've just bought a new pair of jeans, and the instructions advise hanging them out on the line to freshen them up and avoid washing them if possible, to preserve their colour.

You'd think in this day and age that someone would have invented colour-fast dye for jeans!

Most of my jeans are Levi’s and they advise washing them every ten wears. I tend to go four or five but partly because we have a white cat who sheds all over the place, and also because I am clumsy/messy - they’re not dirty/smelly from just “wear”.

WinterLobelia · 13/01/2024 23:13

I just wear jeans from the supermarket I am afraid and usually three wears max. I agree with you op that colours should be more robust than that!!

FlyingWithoutAPlane · 13/01/2024 23:15

Not my relative who decided to not wash maternity dungarees for the entire pregnancy as jeans are self cleaning/antimicrobial apparently. She smelt. Also I’d be worried about the infections caused down below.

I wash mine after every wear.

PamelaParis · 13/01/2024 23:17

Whenever I spill something on them. Or every couple of weeks if I manage to keep them clean!

I wash mine after every wear.

That's ridiculous and bad for both the jeans and the environment.

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 13/01/2024 23:19

I wear jeans every day. Reckon I change them maybe every 5 days or so. I re-dye them after about 6 months (easy-peasy, just use one of those pods that go in the machine with them) and then replace them after a year.

2chocolateoranges · 13/01/2024 23:19

I wear jeans twice then wash.

Xmasbaby11 · 13/01/2024 23:21

About 5 wears maybe more. I don’t wear them in warm weather or to exercise so I don’t sweat in them and rarely seem to get marks on them so this is plenty.

GeorgeBeckett · 13/01/2024 23:22

When they get dirty or in the case of ye olde skinny jean when they need tightening up.

I'm awful for crawling on the floor with the kids, even outside. Other people seem to crouch and not get their knees dirty but I never manage. So washing jeans a lot more during the toddler phase!

Copperoliverbear · 13/01/2024 23:23

Twice

I do some drastically environmentally-friendly things.

Walking around in dirty clothes isn’t one of them.

BeadedBubbles · 13/01/2024 23:25

Wear jeans every day. No hard and fast rule - depends what I've been doing and how dirty they've got. But normally 3 days unless they're dirty from dog walking or gardening.

DappledThings · 13/01/2024 23:25

4-5 days

"I wash mine after every wear."

and

By god, this 'only on Mumsnet' thing is really true, isn't it? 🙄😂

After EVERY WEAR? oh come on. Mind you, this poster gives no additional info, such as 'and I work in a cattle shed up to my knees in slurry' so I guess I will let that one pass in case she does😏

Infections down below. See above, no additional info given, perhaps the cousin who never washed these jeans had galloping thrush that soaked through her knickers, but otherwise, I think that's a bit of an unlikely outcome?

I wash mine when they need it. I have knickers underneath. If they get dirty, they get washed.

2024anotheryear · 13/01/2024 23:26

Jeans lose their shape after 2 wears regardless of quality. Really, do people wear the same piece of clothing for longer? Why not pop them inside out on a short wash with non bio which helps retain colour and dry them inside out on a line?

ikmow · 13/01/2024 23:26

Twice. None of my jeans have actually suffered by doing this.

Clothes are not, in normal circumstances, 'dirty' after one wear.

echt · 13/01/2024 23:27

I wash jeans inside out, in a laundry bag on short cold wash.

idontlikealdi · 13/01/2024 23:27

When they're dirty. No infections so far...

No, I don’t work in a cattle shed.

I just like fresh clothing and have had the unfortunate experience of sharing space with smelly people too often.

There’s no excuse in wearing clothes that are anything other than freshly laundered.

I think you might be me, I'm exactly the same..three wears four at a push if I'm feeling like a bit cba. My jeans are all under £20 except my Levis, but they are nicely faded to perfection. The indigo Levis are as dark as when I bought them 7 years ago ( helps that my fat arse hasn't been in them some winters)

Neverpostagain · 13/01/2024 23:32

How does one catch an 'infection down below' from jeans? Honestly you could wear your jeans every day for a year and not catch an infection in your nethers. Likely they would actually ward off anyone trying to get close enough to infect you.
