If you wear jeans almost every day, how often do you wash them?

I've just bought a new pair of jeans, and the instructions advise hanging them out on the line to freshen them up and avoid washing them if possible, to preserve their colour.

You'd think in this day and age that someone would have invented colour-fast dye for jeans!

@genetix every three days! also, turn them inside out and it helps to preserve the colour!

gentlemum · 14/01/2024 09:07

When they get dirty, which is not very often. So probably every couple of months. I don't wear them every day though but maybe each pair 2-3 times a week

@BintuBombatu I wash mine after every wear as I have a lab and walk dogs, mine are usually a bit muddy and hairy.

I keep one pair for dog walking, usually leggings tho and they are washed after three or four walks unless they get wet, but I take them off when I get home else dried mud gets everywhere

Once a weekish. They go on the chaidrobe, and get a quick look and sniff towards the end of the week. Honestly, why are some of you so stinky? Do you know what I don't like, that awful cloying gag inducing washing powder smell that drifts off people as they walk past.

Wallywobbles · 14/01/2024 09:08

I'm a farmer so I have a dirty pair and a clean pair on the go most of the time. The clean pair could be 2 weeks. The dirty / muddy pair about 5 days. If I've been lambing they go straight in the machine.

SparePartz · 14/01/2024 09:09

Depends. Once a week unless they're obviously dirty.

I have two pairs of jeans on rotation and one good pair in case we go out anywhere nice (those probably get washed once a year)

SmallestInTheClass · 14/01/2024 09:11

About every 4-5 wears, maybe slightly more often if it's hot in the summer, less in winter. If anyone wants to reduce their carbon footprint and energy bill, committing to wearing things an extra day is a great place to start. Yes, smelly, dirty clothes need a wash but if you wear layers, it's only the one next to your skin that needs frequent washing.

Wallywobbles · 14/01/2024 09:11

"There’s no excuse in wearing clothes that are anything other than freshly laundered."

In your opinion. If you worked with farm animals would that still be your opinion?

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 14/01/2024 09:12

Proper cotton denim jeans - rarely. Maybe once a month.

Cheap jean looking regular trousers full of stretch and added material that isn't denim - every other wear. They aren't jeans.

Boomboom22 · 14/01/2024 09:13

Knickers are just thin cotton. They are not a magic barrier. If your arse sweats or you have any discharge it doesn't just magically only dirty the inside, it soaks through a bit.
Unless people are so so unnaturally clean or they use thick pantyliners which are not really good for your bits it is really skanky to wear them more than 2 full days or 3 or 4 wears if only for a few hours. Why would it be ok to wear jeans for years but not ok to wear any other trousers more than twice?

Nitgel · 14/01/2024 09:13

Monthly or when the arse gets baggy. Jeans are hard wearing and dirt brushes off.

Do you realise how much like 50s housewives some of you sound? Competing over how often you wash clothes!!! Next thing we will get into how often you bleach every surface/sweep the floor/clean your bathroom!

No wonder the planet is in the state it is, some of you really couldn't care less about your actions, as long as you adhere to some ridiculous notion of hygiene which you have invented for yourselves.

Incidentally, where on earth are you all buying these jeans which don't keep their shape?

I wondered about the shape thing. I guess if you have bought a size too small wearing them will stretch them out but I have Spanx jeans and they don't lose shape. I have leggings that bag at the knees, but they aren't for wearing outside so it doesn't matter. Shapeless jeans is a new one on me

One2Four · 14/01/2024 09:15

After 2 or 3 days, sometimes 4, depending on what I've been doing & what I've spilled down them. With 3 kids, cooking, cleaning etc I wear jeans because they're comfortable & practical so no chance of them lasting any longer without a wash. Anything longer & they look grubby. I usually wash jeans on a 30 degree handwash or delicates cycle with non-bio detergent & I don't tumble dry jeans, which helps to maintain the colour & seems to avoid fading too quickly.

Trousers are the same as jeans surely? Wear them then hang them back up till next time? Unless there is visible dirt then they do go in the bag for the dry cleaners which I get to periodically ( once a quarter ish)

JustAnotherKingCnut · 14/01/2024 09:17

Depends on the jeans.

Most are every day dog walking jeans and so they get worn for about five days before washing. But sometimes less if it's been muddy.

Some are smarter jeans and I tend to wash every time I want the 'good shape' back - which is about every 2 days.

People who don't think their groin and bum sweat are kidding themselves.

That's what underwear is for?!

As I'm not a dog I don't generally sniff peoples crotches. And happily my sense of smell is just average.

Jennyjojo5 · 14/01/2024 09:18

@Boomboom22 this is exactly my thought process! It’s a naturally damp/moist area down below which will ‘seep’ through to the trousers from knickers (unless you always wear panty liners etc). Knickers are only a thin bit of cotton ‘barrier’ between..

Clingfilm · 14/01/2024 09:18

4? I tend to wear them out of the home and get changed into something comfier as soon as I get in as so that helps them go longer but my washes are usually just to reshape, can't stand baggy knees!

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/01/2024 09:18

Umm. My arse does not sweat through my pants unless it is a very very hot day ... in which case I would not be wearing jeans.

Boomboomshakeshaketheroom · 14/01/2024 09:19

Since I started wearing Levis I wash them as little as possible. Only if they are actually dirty or smelly. The more they're worn without washing, the more soft and comfortable they get.

In the past couple of weeks I've learned from MN that my vulva WILL be an oozing, peeling, pustulent haven of stinky bacteria and fungus because I treat it so badly:

  • I wash it with soap
  • I rip out the hairs
  • I wear knickers to bed
  • and now, to top it off, I re-wear my jeans.

I'm in my 50s and still waiting for all these awful things to happen, but MN promises me they WILL.

Susuwatariandkodama · 14/01/2024 09:22

2-3 wears.

genetix · 14/01/2024 09:23

"When I once bought jeans from the jeans section of a famous London department store I was advised to wash them no more than twice a year!"

My newly bought jeans are from the Hush range at John Lewis, £89. I guess the pricier brands are wary of people complaining "if I pay £x for jeans I expect them to keep their colour", so the no-washing advice is their mitigation.

I live in jeans, wash them about every 5 days. Mine don't seem to lose their shape - they do soften, but I prefer that to the stiff feeling after washing (I don't use a softener).

My favourite jeans are a dark blue pair from Gap's "1969" range, bought a few years ago, and still the same colour. But I tried the equivalent product on recently and they weren't the same fit or quality.

I do have to shop around for the right fit as I'm not a standard 'model' shape. Last year I paid a whopping £130 for a perfectly fitting pair from Anthropologie, but they faded more quickly than any other jeans I've ever had.
I don't like to wear faded jeans - I prefer solid black or dark blue for a smarter look. There are some brands that claim to have "stay black technology", but their jeans don't seem to fit me so well.

NewYearNewCalendar · 14/01/2024 09:23

Presumably this is heavily going to depend on the type of jeans - proper denim Levi’s with no stretch, reasonably heavy weight but slight stretch (my preference), through to cheap ones that have only a passing relationship with actual denim?

Personally, about 5-10 wears probably. Depends on what I’ve been doing and how mucky my kids have been in that time period.

TotallyForgettableForNow · 14/01/2024 09:34

I wear bog standard high street jeans and they get washed after each wear, like my other clothes.

barkymcbark · 14/01/2024 09:35

I wfh and usually wear one pair for the working week and wash. I wear other pairs on the weekend.
