If you wear jeans almost every day, how often do you wash them?

I've just bought a new pair of jeans, and the instructions advise hanging them out on the line to freshen them up and avoid washing them if possible, to preserve their colour.

You'd think in this day and age that someone would have invented colour-fast dye for jeans!

I do some drastically environmentally-friendly things.

Walking around in dirty clothes isn’t one of them.

I'm not in the UK, but we have advice about washing clothes/protecting the environment on the TV here, and they suggest after every 10 wears.

A pair of jeans are not "dirty" after one wear unless you have spilled something on them. I wash mine when I feel they need washing, I've no idea how often that is.

I despair of people, I really do.

I wash mine after every wear.

Me too.

People who don't think their groin and bum sweat are kidding themselves.

Babla · 14/01/2024 01:14

After a day's worth of wear. Otherwise they and I stink.

After a day?!

Jeans lose their shape after 2 wears regardless of quality. Really, do people wear the same piece of clothing for longer? Why not pop them inside out on a short wash with non bio which helps retain colour and dry them inside out on a line?

Agree.

Jesus, some of them must be crawling around under their own power!

That's what underwear is for?!

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 14/01/2024 01:20

Do you realise how much like 50s housewives some of you sound? Competing over how often you wash clothes!!! Next thing we will get into how often you bleach every surface/sweep the floor/clean your bathroom!

No wonder the planet is in the state it is, some of you really couldn't care less about your actions, as long as you adhere to some ridiculous notion of hygiene which you have invented for yourselves.

Incidentally, where on earth are you all buying these jeans which don't keep their shape?

"I wash mine after every wear."

and

"I’d be worried about the infections caused down below."

By god, this 'only on Mumsnet' thing is really true, isn't it? 🙄😂

After EVERY WEAR? oh come on. Mind you, this poster gives no additional info, such as 'and I work in a cattle shed up to my knees in slurry' so I guess I will let that one pass in case she does😏

Infections down below. See above, no additional info given, perhaps the cousin who never washed these jeans had galloping thrush that soaked through her knickers, but otherwise, I think that's a bit of an unlikely outcome?

I wash mine when they need it. I have knickers underneath. If they get dirty, they get washed.

Lol, this - I wash them when they are dirty, certainly not after a couple of wears. "Only on Mumsnet" is a thing, or perhaps no knickers is a Mumsnet thingGrin

Joeslaol00 · 14/01/2024 01:25

After about 7 wears . I always have sanitary protection so I think 7 times is ready for a wash .

Whenever I spill something on them. Or every couple of weeks if I manage to keep them clean!

That’s me too ^

suki1964 · 14/01/2024 01:32

Work jeans, about once a week ( work week is 16 hours )

Going out jeans, when I can get them on and off without unbuttoning - then its just cos they need tightening up

Fizbosshoes · 14/01/2024 08:15

I'm yet to discover how people are managing to launder and dry vast quantities of washing when they wash clothes/towels and sometimes bedding (and most of MN seems to have king or super king beds - so bulkier bedding) after one wear/use.
One person(another thread) insisted because she lived in the south east she was able to dry washing outside every day. We had rain every day for weeks in the summer - and before Xmas, I'm not convinced she had her own microclimate.

Jeans won’t be filthy after a single use. Most close won’t. Only really nickers and socks need washing after every use.

After every 8-10 wears unless they're visibly dirty. They don't need it more often, and we all have a responsibility to minimise our environmental impact where reasonably possible.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/01/2024 08:43

Do you realise how much like 50s housewives some of you sound?

Except of course they wouldn't have been washing outer clothes after every wear, they'd have been airing them.

Moonlaserbearwolf · 14/01/2024 08:50

I have about 5 pairs of jeans that I alternate between and then wash them all roughly every couple of months. So about every 10 wears, but I don’t keep count. I would only wash sooner if I spilt something on them.

When I once bought jeans from the jeans section of a famous London department store I was advised to wash them no more than twice a year!

KissTheRains · 14/01/2024 08:57

These thread highlight just why the environment is screwed.

every cycle of the washer uses 48L of water.
Then there's the chemicals used in the detergents and softeners.
Then the electric used to run it.

No matter how much people do to try and help the environment, it's all for naught whilst other people casually admit to pissing away 100s of litres of water a week to keep their clean clothes cleaner.

RampantIvy · 14/01/2024 08:57

After every wear is OTT and completely unnecessary unless they get filthy. I wear mine for about a week before they get washed. If they get dirty or fail the sniff test before then they will get put in the laundry basket as required.

Missingmyusername · 14/01/2024 08:59

Smell the crotch I guess 🤣ewww

WeightoftheWorld · 14/01/2024 09:01

Varies massively. Sometimes only after one wear but that's usually more because the kids have wiped mucky hands on them or drooled on them or spilled something on them than anything else. If I manage to keep them clean from other substances then I wash them less often but don't keep track exactly when. Maybe every 5 wears or so?

Missingmyusername · 14/01/2024 09:01

@BintuBombatu I wash mine after every wear as I have a lab and walk dogs, mine are usually a bit muddy and hairy.

Nannyfannybanny · 14/01/2024 09:01

I think it was Vivian Westwood who said you should wash jeans. 30 years ago, you were told to dry clean them only. I read recently online from one of the big magazines, put them in the freezer for a couple of hours to kill any germs. If you shower/bath regularly, clean undies,of course they don't smell. I've got a pair, called Vintage Next, you can tell by the label practically new, from a charity shop for a fiver, and they have never faded. I'll wear them a few times, hang outside or even on the outside of the wardrobe door, until I fancy wearing them again. DH has this hyperacute sense of smell,he would tell me if they smelt.

Nannyfannybanny · 14/01/2024 09:02

Vivienne Westwood said NEVER WASH JEANS

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/01/2024 09:03

Proper jeans should be treated like wool clothes and only washed infrequently.

Spot clean any stains or spills and here is the thing ...... just like your grandma no doubt taught you - air clothes after wear, that deals with any stale odours.

Seriously, people seem to have forgotten how to air stuff.

Doggymummar · 14/01/2024 09:04

Never counted, but I WFH in a desk job and wear the same pair all week so probably after 5 wears. With more occasional worn items I don't know, if they are clean they are hung in the wardrobe for another day. I always use the sniff test to be honest. I hate the smell of laundry detergent so we use unscented but if I whiff pit or bum they go in the wash. Also my tumble drier has a refresh programme that knocks out the creases.

I read that as "after every year" for a moment. 😂
