If you wear jeans almost every day, how often do you wash them?

I've just bought a new pair of jeans, and the instructions advise hanging them out on the line to freshen them up and avoid washing them if possible, to preserve their colour.

You'd think in this day and age that someone would have invented colour-fast dye for jeans!

Most of my jeans are Levi’s and they advise washing them every ten wears. I tend to go four or five but partly because we have a white cat who sheds all over the place, and also because I am clumsy/messy - they’re not dirty/smelly from just “wear”.

I totally read that as ten YEARS at first!!

eatdrinkandbemerry · 14/01/2024 15:49

I wear jeans everyday and wash them after every day.
I own lots of pairs so it's not an inconvenience and I'm an absolute muck magnet with a dog that likes to give me muddy paw prints on my clothes daily 😩🤣

We have a tumble dryer so drying isn't an issue.

That would use a lot of energy though

Goodness. All that washing really isn't necessary. Don't you shower every day? I do. I also wear clean socks and underwear every day, I wear anti perspirant and don't perspire very much.

I am wearing a jumper (over a T-shirt) that I wore yesterday and the day before. It will go in the wash after I have taken it off tonight.

Of course I shower every day! I just like fresh, clean clothing.
It was pretty much denied to me as a child so now I have choices as an adult I choose to be very clean.

Probably but I am the one paying for it !

After seven days. Turned inside out.

On Mumsnet, nothing would surprise me.

Surely knitwear and coats aren’t tumble dryable.

I'm wondering if I have some sort of an issue then.

I wash jeans when the crotch area smells, generally that's after a full days wear, or a couple of evenings if I'm lucky.

I have worn a clean pair since 5am this morning ( travelling) am now relaxing in hotel room, I checked them and they have a faint crotch whiff, I will probably wash that area before I wear them again- no washing machine as on holiday.

I don't have huge amounts of discharge or anything and I shower daily, so I'm not sure why they get smelly so quickly.

If you do have something wrong with you, I do too. And I'm certain we don't! Some people just don't smell and some people, us (thank you for joining me) sometimes do.

NewYearNewPyjamas · 14/01/2024 16:34

@TotallyForgettableForNow well, we are all paying for it as we burn through the planets resources for quicker drying. Not saying I'm a saint but it's not just the finances of it.

ChristmasTreeMagic · 14/01/2024 16:42

@rookiemere I am exactly the same as you.

I'm in my early 50s & late peri-menopausal if not veering into actual menopause as many months since last period.

I wear panty liners with trousers for work but I still wash them after 2 wears & don't wear them consecutive days.

I don't really wear jeans anymore but even wearing cotton knickers with that weird inbuilt gusset, without a liner, the crotch would smell like crotch after a full day's wear. And I suspect all these unwashed for weeks / months jeans do too!

The vast majority of people do not smell fresh in my experience. I travel a lot with work using all modes of public transport buses, trams, trains & fairly regularly planes & in the past year I've moved seats several times to get away from people people who appeared clean & tidy but actually smelled v bad of stale skin / u washed clothes.

People become nose blind to their own smells. I too have had experience of a colleague who didn't believe in regular hair washing & I could smell her before getting to her office too. Oily bodily smell. I used to have to open my window if she'd been in my office. I dread to imagine getting up close the the crotch of her jeans!!

When people stop taking flights abroad 2/3 times a year or stop driving 2 minutes down the road or ordering mascara off amazon that arrives in a coffin sized box then I will worry about it.
Of course we are burning through the planets resources however my washing is a drop in the ocean compared to the huge factories in China fuelled entirely by coal and using millions of gallons of water to produce cheap clothing which then gets shipped across the world in fuel guzzling super tankers.
Me doing a few less loads of washing won't make an iota of difference to the planet and we as humans chase the money so the real issues won't be solved in my lifetime.

Exactly. If you live in a flat then a tumble dryer will likely be balanced by reduced need for heating. You could tell by your bills if it was all balancing out or not though.

Good points.

Not to mention people choosing to produce umpteen new human beings despite the environmental cost, people indulging constantly in supermarket fast fashion (I buy all of my clothing except underpants from used sources even though I could afford whatever i want) and other environmental abominations.

Doing a couple of loads of laundry a week so that I can have clean clothing, clean bedding and fresh towels does not make me feel the slightest bit guilty, as a childfree minimalist. Going about dirty and smelly is not going to save the planet when we have 8 billion people on it, most of them young and likely to reproduce.

RampantIvy · 14/01/2024 17:47

All this whataboutery is irrelevant.

Washing outer clothes after just one wear is just unnecessary in most cases.

Toomuch44 · 14/01/2024 17:55

I wear mine roughly five days, but if they look dirty or something gets spilt on them, then sooner. Never had an infection or any irritation down below in my life.

I tumble dry mine..

108Anj · 14/01/2024 19:38

Two wears then wash. Maybe my nose is quite sensitive, but even if I'm wearing underwear and thick tights I think my jeans smell after two wears. Not just the crotch, but I cook quite a bit, and I don't want my clothes to smell like yesterday's meal which they do after two day's wear. Also, I think clean things or places somehow have a different vibe to things that are not so clean. I also knew someone who didn't wash their hair and claimed that hair was self-cleaning. It was a bit gross.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/01/2024 19:38

I wear mine a maximum of three days before washing.

RampantIvy · 14/01/2024 19:41

I agree about the cooking smells @108Anj.
If I'm making a curry or frying onions etc then I would put the clothes I am wearing in the wash.

greengreengrass25 · 14/01/2024 19:44

Boomboom22 · 14/01/2024 09:13

Knickers are just thin cotton. They are not a magic barrier. If your arse sweats or you have any discharge it doesn't just magically only dirty the inside, it soaks through a bit.
Unless people are so so unnaturally clean or they use thick pantyliners which are not really good for your bits it is really skanky to wear them more than 2 full days or 3 or 4 wears if only for a few hours. Why would it be ok to wear jeans for years but not ok to wear any other trousers more than twice?

I know

I find my trousers smell a bit " bottomy" after a couple of wears.

jeans are quite close fitting

If I have food smells on clothes then I simply hang them on the clothes line for a while. The fresh air soon sorts it out.

RampantIvy · 14/01/2024 19:52

We have had far too much rain for me to do that recently @ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming

I do sometimes hang clothes after one wear on the curtain rail in front of an open window.

12gum · 14/01/2024 20:07

I wash my jeans once a month - once every 6 weeks but I only wear them for one day/half a day every week. So realistically probably 5 wears

alpenguin · 14/01/2024 20:12

Wash only when they’re visibly dirty or smelly but I only do a wash every fortnight so they sit and fester in the basket a while too. I tend to buy two pairs of the same denims though so I have multiples and it just looks like I wear the same ones all the time
