Anyone not doing a roast dinner tomorrow?

My mam always used to do a roast Christmas day, boxing day and NYD.

I genuinely cannot be bothered. I'm not celebrating tonight.

I'm making whatever in the freezer tomorrow like any other Monday.

I think my depression is creeping in a bit in all honesty.

I won't be, I've got effing Covid so I will carry on sulking that it's messed up my New Year Plans. Were supposed to be visiting family who would have probably cooked on though!

bananaboats · 31/12/2023 18:05

Scotland & steak pie here too!

SpringViolet · 31/12/2023 18:24

Chicken fajitas tomorrow in a break from tradition (normally always do a roast) as DH working today and tomorrow til late. Will lay out a hot buffet at around 9-10pm tonight when guests arrive and he’s home.

Will have a roast on Tuesday when he’s off and DC are all at home to use up the Turkey crown sitting in freezer that I bought in mid December but got a whole Turkey for Christmas Day later instead. I missed my special homemade cauliflower cheese (which I can only be arsed to do once a year although I love it) on Christmas Day as couldn’t find a cauliflower in the shops so looking forward to that then!

What is Hoppin John?

It’s essentially rice with black-eyed peas and greens, traditionally with pork as well but I make a veggie version Smile https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoppin%27_John

Wacadu · 01/01/2024 01:31

I'm in Scotland so it's steak pie and veg. Yum.

LBOCS2 · 01/01/2024 01:36

I've done proper, three course meal entertaining three times since Christmas Day. Like fuck am I doing any more cooking. We're ordering from the lovely Italian down the road.

This sounds delicious. Do you have a recipe for the fish?

That's pretty much the entire recipe 😂It's fairly simple. Large, whole fish (any will do, ideally carp, but I only found salmon this year). De-scale, fill with carrots, peas and lashings of garlic butter. Bake in foil until done, serve with roast potatoes or boiled potatoes. No sauce needed; the garlic butter does that job nicely. I tend to make my own - just butter, a tiny amount of olive oil for softening, lots of minced garlic and some mixed herbs.

Steak pie, it’s a law I believe in Scotland lol

Blanketpolicy · 01/01/2024 02:17

Huge steak and beef links pie, mashed turnip, mashed potatoes, and sometimes carrots. 56 years and I don't think I have ever had a different ne'erday dinner.

Butchers steak pies are a big thing here in Scotland with the options of a steak pie, steak and beef links or steak and pork links and for the best butchers you need to pre order well before Christmas.

I usually do a roast dinner but I can’t be arsed this year. There was at least one family member working Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Hogmanay, and New Years Day. All our meals have been about 9 at night over the festive season. Tomorrow we’re having a takeaway.

TerfTalking · 01/01/2024 05:37

Absolutely not. I always start a diet on NYD anyway 😂

went to the farm shop yesterday and bought a steak pie for DH and some nice roast ham. I’ll be having the ham with baked potato and salad.

usedtobeasizeten · 01/01/2024 06:47

Steak pie here…Scotland.

Cuwins · 01/01/2024 07:03

No roast here- it's a normal day here. Partner has already gone off to work and I'm up with the toddler. Toddler and I will be off out later for the day. Then burgers for dinner tonight.

JanglingJack · 01/01/2024 07:09

I haven't even slept yet, but I'm thinking some kind of pasta concoction. Possibly with a spicy tomato sauce and some tuna. Or tuna toasties 🤣 It's only me and DD., we'll have a lazy one.

doitwithlove · 01/01/2024 07:23

Working today, pre made shepherds pie will be happening here.

PartnersInCrime · 01/01/2024 07:41

Macaroni cheese with some nice bacon bits and tomato on top and a thick cheese crust.

We had 2 roasts last week - enough for a while.

StragglyTinsel · 01/01/2024 07:45

I opened this thread purely for all the Scottish people saying ‘roast dinner? No. Steak pie is the meal for new year’.

I’m having steak pie too. Obviously.

decionsdecisions62 · 01/01/2024 07:50

Yep going to do one later I think in memory of my mum that would always do one

CherriesInChocolate · 01/01/2024 07:55

I was going to make mushroom and chestnut Wellington but DH used all the mushrooms for something else so we’re having tagine.

EatenbytheYuleCat · 01/01/2024 08:16

Steak pie is the law in our house. (I'm in England, but Scottish DM - I honestly thought everyone had steak pie on NYD until my first new year with now-DH who'd never heard of steak pie at new year.)

We're going to in-laws for dinner today and having a roast so I made a pie yesterday and I keep thinking today is the 2nd.

Heyhoherewegoagain · 01/01/2024 08:18

I’ve just had to tank out of bed to get the pastry for the steak pie out of the freezer😂the beef’s already cooked (PROPER steak pie with, not the abomination my ex mil made of beef and cooked pastry, you need to pastry to get soggy on the bottom from the gravy!)

AuntieMarys · 01/01/2024 08:22

Cauliflower cheese with leeds, mushroom and bacon here.

Steak pie, it’s a law I believe in Scotland lol

Has been the law since before William Wallace I believe 🤣

slavetothekittens · 01/01/2024 09:15

We had our roast yesterday evening so today will be one of those whatever we can concoct using whatever is in the fridge/cupboard days.

LouLou198 · 01/01/2024 09:18

I'm not, I'm ordering a take away pizza. It's traditional Grin
