Anyone not doing a roast dinner tomorrow?

My mam always used to do a roast Christmas day, boxing day and NYD.

I genuinely cannot be bothered. I'm not celebrating tonight.

I'm making whatever in the freezer tomorrow like any other Monday.

I think my depression is creeping in a bit in all honesty.

Huge full cooked breakfast at whatever time we all emerge post NYE celebrations.

Ohmylovejune · 31/12/2023 14:44

I'm doing a roast tonight but only because that's what we have in the freezer. A stuffed frozen chicken portion that I bought "in case I needed more", the remaining stuff I froze to take supplies from: stuffing balls, pigs in blankets, parsnips, roasties. And I'm using the last of the carrots and broccoli head (unless I nab that to make broccoli and stilton soup). Plus my DH has made a crumble this morning using frozen garden fruit. I've made some trifles but they aren't setting very well at the moment so they may be eaten tomorrow.

Last night was what was left in freezer of "nibbly bits "

We organised the freezer yesterday as we can finally see the bottom of it! There was quite a bit of fish, so perhaps we will make a chowder and a fresh bread.

Having read this thread I think I’m going to ‘discover’ that I have Scottish ancestry. Steak pie and mash? I’d be all over that.

Motheranddaughter · 31/12/2023 14:58

We are having chicken, ham ,roast potatoes, mash potatoes ,yorkshire puddings.roast carrots ,cauliflower cheese ,pigs in blankets and onion gravy
Apple crumble and chocolate torte to follow

DrCoconut · 31/12/2023 14:59

Fried rice here.

mrsm43s · 31/12/2023 15:02

We're going to a friend's tomorrow for a huge all day breakfast (usually served about 4pm). There's several families going and we'll be drinking fizz and probably playing some board games. We've done this for many years. I don't think a fry up would have been the first thing that popped into my mind for NYD, but we're being hosted and we have such a wonderful time that I'm really happy to embrace it as a tradition!

I'm doing roast duck tonight for DH and I (kids are teens and off out partying - I'll cook them a substantial dinner of egg, chips and beans or something like that before they go to line their stomachs!). DH and I had originally planned to go to the pub to see the new year in, but decided we're too old to be bothered, especially as we have a full day tomorrow -and I'm really looking forward to an evening with just the two of us after lots for full on socialising over Christmas.

NahHumBrag · 31/12/2023 15:03

God no. All I want now is clear chicken soup spiked with corriander, lime, chilli etc.

Enough already of the meat, stuffing, potatoes, cheese and chocolate!

Princessfluffy · 31/12/2023 15:03

Seems a bit too soon after Christmas Day for another huge roast.

I'm making a jambalaya a la Jamie Oliver.

BearSoFair · 31/12/2023 15:03

DS1 will be making a fish pie here

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 31/12/2023 15:24

Definitely no roast here - we had one on Christmas Day so that's it for a few months now. A roast dinner is not a favourite meal in this house at all.

Lasagne for us tomorrow 😋

Taytocrisps · 31/12/2023 15:49

Skethylita · 31/12/2023 13:09

No, but making the (in my family) traditional large baked fish stuffed with garlic butter and carrots/ peas today.

This sounds delicious. Do you have a recipe for the fish?

ODFOx · 31/12/2023 16:04

Not this year.

We've had three different roast dinners in the last week alone. Then braised pheasant with mash and roast veg tonight.
So tomorrow I'm doing a big cheese board with fresh bread, pickles and fruit, followed by the Christmas pudding that no-one had room for on Christmas Day.

Having read this thread I think I’m going to ‘discover’ that I have Scottish ancestry. Steak pie and mash? I’d be all over that.

I've already made creamed mashed neeps and carrots with cream, butter and black pepper. We'll also have cabbage and sprouts for a bitier contrast

Our local butcher also sells extra gravy to go with their delicious steak pies so we've got some of that too

Mumofyellows · 31/12/2023 16:16

Cottage pie for us!

StopGo · 31/12/2023 16:22

Due to a combo of shift work, flu and small family crisis no Christmas dinner was cooked or eaten. So tomorrow's plan is roast beef with roast potatoes and parsnips, Yorkshire puddings, veg and proper gravy.

gingercat02 · 31/12/2023 16:33

We're having fajitas tomorrow.
All the leftover Christmas food has gone in the freezer.
DH and I went out to a local Vietnamese restaurant last night. I'm done with Christmas food.
DH is Scottish, so we should be having steak pie, but he's not bothered, so we aren't.

ThreeRingCircus · 31/12/2023 16:36

I normally always cook a roast dinner on Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Easter Sunday. But we went out with friends today for Sunday lunch as a NYE treat (which I much prefer as a way to celebrate than going out in the evening for new year!)

Tomorrow I'm making lasagne, sounds like it's a popular choice!

PatienceOfEngels · 31/12/2023 17:15

My mum also always used to do a big roast and invite the family over.

We usually now just have a buffet tea on NYD but after a week in the UK and endless cheese/crackers/salad/cold meats etc. we're craving normal food, so it's salmon, broccoli and potatoes followed by butterscotch pudding and custard.

BatteryPowerGnat · 31/12/2023 17:28

Lamb curry for us tomorrow

SawYouLookingButChoseToIgnoreYou · 31/12/2023 17:29

No, sod all that cooking. It's just the 2 of us, so we're having an Indian takeaway tonight and a chicken salad tomorow

Nanalisa60 · 31/12/2023 17:39

Another one that’s having steak pie mash and cauliflower cheese, it’s what most people in Scotland have , who can be bothered with a fall roast. Also have a lovely big pot of Lentil soup made with ham.

APurpleSquirrel · 31/12/2023 17:44

I thought about doing a roast (or rather DH would as he does most of the cooking) but as I wasn't sure what we'd be doing decided on Chinese - got some crispy duck from Aldi & we'll have rice & noodles too.

PinkflowersWhiteBerries · 31/12/2023 17:51

Another steak pie with mash , here in Scotland. I got it from the butcher. So easy and comforting.

ssd · 31/12/2023 17:53

We're having steak pie, roasties and veg in 10 minutes. We're in Scotland but i never know if we have it the 31st or the 1st so today it is

ginasevern · 31/12/2023 17:59

I've done a roast in years gone by but my family has shrunk so tomorrow I shall be going out. A rather nice (I hope) Thai restaurant that serves excellent cocktails. Taxi!
