Anyone not doing a roast dinner tomorrow?

My mam always used to do a roast Christmas day, boxing day and NYD.

I genuinely cannot be bothered. I'm not celebrating tonight.

I'm making whatever in the freezer tomorrow like any other Monday.

I think my depression is creeping in a bit in all honesty.

I never ever cook a roast dinner aside from Christmas day. So much effort for very little reward. If I fancy a Sunday roast I go out for a carvery. Tomorrow we're having lasagne.

Funnily enough, I'd find making a lasagne more of a faff than whistling up a roast.

Skethylita · 31/12/2023 13:09

No, but making the (in my family) traditional large baked fish stuffed with garlic butter and carrots/ peas today.

Wheeeeee · 31/12/2023 13:11

Steak pie from the butcher is waiting in the fridge 🙂

Lancasterel · 31/12/2023 13:15

I’ve never heard of an NY roast! A nice meal yes, especially if we have guests, but not a roast!

As I discovered from MN that Scotland = Steak Pie that is what we are having. DFiancé is from Scotland and so after confirming with him we are having that and apple crumble for after.

I've learned something new on MN today as well. This explains why we always had a steak pie at new year when I was a kid. My dad had Scottish ancestry, so that must be where it came from.

Justsackpat · 31/12/2023 13:18

Back in the day it was a big roast at parents but but now I host and do a nice fresh buffet as I’ve got a little house.

springtome · 31/12/2023 13:22

We are doing a festive toad in the hole. Pigs in blankets and stuffing balls in the batter then veg and potatoes.

We usually do some kind of roast though.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 31/12/2023 13:22

Steak pie, mash and greens for us. And as much leftover chocolate as we can manage. Couldn't face another roast!

Snowpatrolling · 31/12/2023 13:24

No roast dinner here! Left overs for food which consists of pizza cheese and crackers and pigs in blankets! 🤣 I’m trying to do a mass clean up!!! No time for another roast!

Lollypop701 · 31/12/2023 13:24

Dh husband family is Austrian so snizel rice and salads at ours

maddiemookins16mum · 31/12/2023 13:30

I’m doing one, tomorrow is kind of an extra Sunday to us, lie in, late breakfast and pottering in the kitchen with music on doing an easy roast dinner (plus I still have bits I want to use up like sprouts, parsnips and streaky bacon). Then we’ll collapse on the sofa with a film before back to work on Tuesday. Today feels like a Saturday, we’re having a curry later and then going ‘out, out’.

Cosyanddozy · 31/12/2023 13:36

Steak pie, mash and veg on New Year's Day. Christmas Day is a roast chicken with the usual trimmings as we don't like turkey, and Boxing Day is a curry made with the leftovers.

Before you know it the haggis will be out on the 25th. I don't want to add more stress than necessary by throwing more big dinners around!

palmtreesoliveleaves · 31/12/2023 13:37

Steak pie here in Scotland, with mashed tatties and carrots.

RaginaPhalange · 31/12/2023 13:41

Also from Scotland and steak pie here too.

Theoldwoman · 31/12/2023 14:06

We aren’t. We just have a roast, well whenever we feel like one!

aintnospringchicken · 31/12/2023 14:19

I'm Scottish too. Absolutely has to be steak pie on NYD with mashed tatties and veg.
My family would disown me if I served up anything else other than steak pie .

BangingOn · 31/12/2023 14:19

Hang on, when people say they do a roast dinner on Boxing Day do they mean an actual, proper roast dinner the day after Christmas Day? Or is it more cold meats and leftovers from Christmas Day?

Boxing Day lunch is my favourite meal of the year- cold meats, stuffing, bread sauce and bubble and squeak. NY roast aren’t a thing in our house. Probably the remains of the party food or a take away.

Spaghettieis · 31/12/2023 14:21

I hardly ever cook a roast dinner tbh. We usually have hoppin John on NYE but we’re going to have leftover vegetable curry this year, and whatever is left in the fridge tomorrow as our supermarket delivery is on the 2nd!

CaramelMac · 31/12/2023 14:29

Yes, I normally manage to get a turkey reduced price between Christmas and new Year so I’ll be doing a less fancy Christmas dinner with the leftover crackers before I put the Christmas table cloth away.

Smallngrumpy · 31/12/2023 14:31

Going to do today as never had a Christmas dinner. Will be turkey and a ridiculously large dessert, cant wait.

Whatwillbewilbe · 31/12/2023 14:36

We’re having the steak pie, mash, peas and carrots for Hogmanay this year, instead of New Year’s Day, just for a change. We’ve decided to have roast beef tomorrow in a break of tradition.

Taytocrisps · 31/12/2023 14:37

We're doing burgers (nice turkey burgers from the butcher), potatoes dauphinoise and broccoli. I would have done a roast but DD just wanted burgers.

What is Hoppin John?

backtowinter · 31/12/2023 14:40

Steak pie

From the local butcher.

2chocolateoranges · 31/12/2023 14:42

As others have said, in Scotland it’s traditionally steak pie for New years Day.

dh is making a steak pie with mash, toast potatoes and veg. Can’t wait. Love a homemade steak pie.

we have chocolate gateau for dessert.
