Cleverly was just on LBC where he went on about how determined he was to take action on drink spiking and that his apology about his joke was heartfelt and he really regrets it, blah, blah, blah.

As an aside, why do some men think that the most important about a woman is her level of attractiveness? Ferrari said that he had met Mrs Cleverly and that she is a very attractive woman. Nothing about her intellect or personality. Just that.

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2024 08:25

I read Rory Stewart's book over Christmas which some of you might be interested in. It's a good read , although I find he invests so many words in convincing us he's the good guy trapped in a nasty world that he doesn't really reflect much on the damage of actual Tory policies. It's more about personalities. Still his portraits of Johnson, Cameron and even Williamson, Truss , Hancock are fascinating. The only person who gets off is Gauke. (and Rory himself, natch , who does no wrong...)

Piggywaspushed · 02/01/2024 08:27

Presumably the level of Mrs Cleverley's attractiveness is somehow in Ferrari's head relevant to proving the comments were a self deprecating joke. Shithead.

IClaudine · 02/01/2024 08:27

Cleverly on the BBC today, spouting the same things he did on LBC

Yes. The need to sedate your wife depends on how attractive she is.

newnamethanks · 02/01/2024 08:46

Interesting how comments are perceived. Maybe Ferrari thinks that's a compliment, both to Cleverly and Mrs Cleverly and might be bewildered that many women find it utterly insulting. Although I'm probably being too kind. It's likely just faux naivete. I'm not sure which is more contemptuous.

the80sweregreat · 02/01/2024 08:54

Surprised at Nick Ferrari as he usually does try to avoid being a complete idiot and watches his words a lot more , but clearly didn't over this issue :(

Happy new year all x WineCake

watching the London fireworks last night it really hit me how little we have to celebrate from the past year. There was much made of significant anniversaries for other things but not a fat lot to look back at 2023 and feel good about.

Happy New Year and good health to all! I mostly lurk on these threads and really appreciate the info and insights they provide

Saw this and thought of you lot ! 😆

Home Sec James Cleverly tells Sky News asylum seekers are citing their Rwanda policy as a deterrent during interviews.

Would be interesting to see some evidence of this

This reply sums it up

James Cleverly..."

"I've just spoken to a woman who risked her life and the life of her child to cross the Channel in a makeshift dinghy in treacherous conditions and she told me that the Rwanda policy is a real deterrent."

This really happened.

No... really it did."

That’s hilarious. I’ve just listened to his Today interview, the squirming was incredible.

newnamethanks · 02/01/2024 10:12

Bloody hell. How long can he last? Is there a Foot in Mouth Award for 2024? Early starter.

I am not clever(ly) but surely that the women quoted applied for asylum in the UK is an indication in and of itself that the Rwanda policy did not deter her?

BIossomtoes · 02/01/2024 10:42

Exactly @jgw1. He’s so spectacularly stupid I don’t know how he manages to tie his shoelaces.

I’m not an expert but I’d agree. If she’s here she hasn’t been deterred.

RafaistheKingofClay · 02/01/2024 10:48

Also, I thought Rwanda was a lovely country where the asylum seekers will be treated well so it shouldn’t be a deterrent.

Does Clevely think we won't notice or is he so Cleverly that he hasn't noticed?

Don't it will make Cleverly's head hurt.

RafaistheKingofClay · 02/01/2024 11:10

It’s making my head hurt!

Notonthestairs · 02/01/2024 11:11

Cleverly has to provide anecdotal 'evidence' because they don't have any actual evidence that the Rwanda plan acts as deterrent. Which is also why they have had to pay for the scheme under Ministerial Direction - there simply isnt the evidence to show that it offers value for money. Only 100 odd schemes have been paid for by Ministerial Direction since 2000.

RafaistheKingofClay · 02/01/2024 11:22

Why does Cleverly still have a job anyway? He ought to have been fired by now in any functioning government.

DuncinToffee · 02/01/2024 11:30

They are not a functioning government

Sunak is celebrating clearing the asylum backlog in his latest tweet

only

4,500 have just been reclassified as "complex".
17k have been "withdrawn" (for no obvious reason).
An unknown number of others have been rejected without adequate evidence.

Manupilating the figures, alternative facts, the Tories.

Yup. Shows just what they are. All of them, politicians and supporters.

newnamethanks · 02/01/2024 12:09

I saw on the BBC news feed earlier this morning "asylum backlog cleared". Assuming that's just a lie and distortion, please correct me if it is not.

newnamethanks · 02/01/2024 12:10

Sorry Duncin, just seen your post. Please ignore me.
