Thanks Duncin.

I sometimes wish Cooper was Labour leader.

She is fearsome at the Despatch box I have to say... any Home Secretary quakes in their boots when she stands up, she has all the facts and figures at her fingertips

RafaistheKingofClay · 12/12/2023 16:39

I’d love her as PM but she’s going to be amazing as Home Sec and I’d rather that she was that than PM.

Roussette · 12/12/2023 16:40

I agree Rafa this is her niche, she's brilliant at it

Not that we need reminding but (despite what Farage says) immigration isn't the number one issue for voters - it's the cost of living stupid. Chart below illustrating this

"But on salience. Illegal migration pales into comparison to both the cost of living and the NHS. Immigration is higher for 2019 Tories but still far behind the cost of living. For that reason a single issue immigration election (that isn’t cost of living) is a non starter"

Is it not also like Brexit, most people didn't think about Europe and the union much until they were rammed into their consciousness and lied to about? Mass onslaught from right wing msm and pals?

RafaistheKingofClay · 12/12/2023 16:52

It’s exactly like EU/Brexit in many ways. Nit least because you’re supposed to keep it in your pocket as an excuse for people to blame for everything and to keep other stuff out of the news but you’re not supposed to actually do it because it’s unworkable and will be a clusterfuck.

BIossomtoes · 12/12/2023 16:52

Exactly like Brexit. And the knowing what a woman is schtick they’re using to try and wind women up with.

tobee · 12/12/2023 16:58

Also, of course, look squirrel! 🐿️

Notonthestairs · 12/12/2023 17:03

Agreed tobee and Rafa.

Thx Dunc

And here we are... waiting for the vote tonight, 7.30pm I understand?

My DH is out with his hobby so I can watch it live (he is not a political creature lovely though he is!)

You can again take one for the team Wine

It will pass, lots of noise and the death of Tory moderation

I think the vote is at 7. I may be home by then on our non functioning public transport system.

RafaistheKingofClay · 12/12/2023 17:36

Not to mention the death of British democracy and independence of legislative and executive systems.

DuncinToffee · 12/12/2023 17:41

I wonder if the shy Tories will speak up, and will it be for or against the bill

OhYouBadBadKitten · 12/12/2023 18:20

I don't know why I'm torturing myself by listening to the bilge in parliament.

DuncinToffee · 12/12/2023 18:25

I am following it via Ian Dunt's twitter thread, that's enough for me.

The brexit benefit thread has an 'interesting' poster Hmm Very much as we were discussing on the previous thread

I might look in on Ian Dunt too

BIossomtoes · 12/12/2023 18:37

It’s a good read.

dontcallmelen · 12/12/2023 18:41

Thank you Duncin some flowers to cheer us all up, especially those of you missing loved ones at this time of year.

I'm sat in a car park in torrential rain (waiting for DD) and following Ian Dunt. It's a depressing catalogue.

Beautiful flowers dontcallmelen

IClaudine · 12/12/2023 18:50

ERG saying they collectively won't support the bill, but it will be for individuals to decide how to vote. I think that means they will abstain, so the bill will pass this reading. They will ask for amendments further down the line.

I think that is what they are saying, but was not totally clear!

RafaistheKingofClay · 12/12/2023 18:53

Not just the ERG but all the right groups of the Tory party. That would be 40 MPs I think only 57 need to abstain to sink it.

They want to amend it in committee stage but the ‘moderates’ aren’t going to vote for an amended bill that makes it more extreme.

DuncinToffee · 12/12/2023 18:57

They are calling themselves the 5 families Confused

Such talentless dregs pulling this country down into the cesspit that is the Conservative party agree it’s a depressing read ICaudine

Roussette · 12/12/2023 18:58

BREAK: All five groups in right of party announcement on vote: we cannot support the bill tonight

DuncinToffee · 12/12/2023 18:59

From Ian Dunt

Cooper intervenes: "Is he aware that while he's been speaking, the New Conservatives, European Research Group, Northern Research Group, Conservative Growth Group and the Commons Sense Group have all said that they can;t support the bill and are going to abstain tonight?"

(Tomlinson speaking)

Did they call themselves that or did the media make it up?
