@TooBigForMyBoots I think (fear) you may be right. Sir Keir Starmer's speech was so good though, looks very much like a PM (a good one) in waiting and someone who can be respected on the world stage so I am keeping some hope alive too , new year and all that!

Equally his meeting with the Greek Prime Minister and Macron in the autumn really looked like PM, whereas Sunak seems to try and run away and hide from international summits.

Well if Braverman or Badenoch get the job it would presumably add to Labour's majority.

Really annoying that they too would then get an honours list and their salary for life.

I heard it was going to a contest between a lettuce, Boris and Truss.

newnamethanks · 04/01/2024 15:29

His working assumption seems to be that he thinks it's his to call. Most of his party seem to hate him. It may be later than he thinks. Fingers 🤞

TrashedSofa · 04/01/2024 15:46

It's possible some of the jockeying is aimed at being the next Opposition leader as much as anything else. Sunak obviously isn't going to hang around after losing the GE, plus Suella and Kemi are in that relatively small group of Tory MPs who can be confident of re-election. Even if they go below 100, you'd think those two will still make it.

My money’s still on May.

It was an absolute joy to watch a proper grown up make a political speech and actually answer journalists’ questions without obfuscation. Hope, service and justice - who wouldn’t want to get behind that? And sleeves rolled up - hats off to whoever thought of that. I can’t wait to see Starmer head to head with Sunak, as he said “Bring it on”.

I agree, the Q&A was very refreshing to watch

It's great to hear Starmer showed leadership and actually answered questions competently.

But it's a sad state of affairs when just answering a question is better than we currently have.

To be fair, it’s a long time since I’ve seen any politician straightforwardly and directly answer questions like that. It was a breath of fresh air.

It's all aimed at being Leader of the Opposition. The Tories are toast at the next GE. So much so that they might not get the seats to actually be the Opposition.

Getting rid of Sunak may improve their fortunes, but there's no way they'll serve another term in government.

Where did this story that Starmer is scared to face Sunak in a debate come from? Who thought it had legs? I mean come on, Sunak can’t even come out of an interview with the Tory pet journalists looking good.

Tory sources I imagine. We see how scared Starmer is at PMQs every week.

Honestly that's given me the best laugh I've had all day.....as if a barrister who was one of the best and has built a career arguing facts in court would be scared of a debate. Ridiculous. Or maybe DARVO, who knows.

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/01/2024 17:38

I don’t know which journalist asked Starmer the question after his speech but it’s the least believable thing that’s come out of the Tories this week. Although I’d be willing to bet we’ll see a few threads on the idea over the next few months.

I think it was the DM

I wouldn't totally rule out some of them still cherishing hope of installing a new leader before the next GE, but not for much longer. Maybe a few weeks tops.

Whoever leads them into the election will obviously have to step down after such a heavy loss. Their political career will be over by January 2025 at the latest, but that does mean that at the moment, up to a full year as PM is up for grabs. The closer that gets, the less likely it is that anyone will consider it worth the tradeoff. My own hunch, based on nothing more than vibes, is that if Rishi's still in by spring there won't be anyone seriously trying to replace him before the GE.

Notonthestairs · 04/01/2024 18:21

I suppose Sunak's position might depend on what his even more right wing friends decide to do about Rwanda.

What frequency of Starmer is dull threads can we expect as the election approaches? More than one an hour.

This seems to be the latest.

Haven’t clicked the link yet, but the answer to the question in the title is ‘hell yeah’

cakeorwine · 04/01/2024 18:42

I can suspect a lot of the replies on those threads.

Because it's very hard talking about Labour without you know what being discussed.

It’s bloody impossible. They’re proving the truth of Starmer’s speech with every post.

Notonthestairs · 04/01/2024 19:05

Those threads ignore the perilous state of the NHS (workforce, IT, infrastructure), education (workforce and infrastructure), transport outside cities, the water system, the justice system (from police to courts to prisons), SOCIAL CARE (capitalised because it infuriates me!), Local Government and standards in politics.

And then there is the state of the economy - undeniably linked to failures in health, education & infrastructure.

They have to ignore & sideline all those issues because the Conservatives track record over the last 13 years is fucking awful.

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/01/2024 19:08

The people starting the treads seem to have missed the point that the whole good thing about Starmer is that he’s boring.

newnamethanks · 04/01/2024 19:19

It's interesting to see the walloped who once spent their time telling us how great Bozo and Brexit were, now reduced - without a policy or acceptable politician to speak of - to just trashing KS. Any beer and curry yet or have we progressed? Oh, got it, he's boring. Not exciting like Sunak then. I see.

yes absolutely this - we just need some normal boring politics after years of chaos.

No beer or curry. Just endless women’s rights bollocks from the usual suspects.
