Why would people donate to this? What am I not understanding here?

TicTacNicNak · 30/10/2023 12:36

I was pretty shocked to hear about the fundraiser. The officers were out of order and got what they deserved imo. Goodness knows who is donating.

Icefoot · 30/10/2023 12:36

From the comments it's looks like it's mostly serving police officers - they're really not getting their house in order 😪

This makes sense. I’m of the (likely unpopular, particularly on MN) opinion that you can’t fix an institution. No matter how many recruitment adverts they put out with smiling brown faces in Met uniforms as the focal point, institutional racism will thrive in the Met whilst individual racists are supported by each other. It’s going nowhere.

Icefoot · 30/10/2023 12:49

Almost 7700 separate donations.

WomenShouldStillWinWomensSports · 30/10/2023 12:50

I bet the the far right etc are donating to it as well. Funny how a fundraiser for allegedly racist police officers is allowed to stand on that site when other fundraisers for other groups have been taken down quite aggressively.

The officers deny they're racist, so they ought to donate this money to all the people whose lives have been ruined by racial profiling of their own organisation. They should literally put this money where their mouth is.

I won't hold my breath.

DrinkingMyWaterMindingMyBiz · 30/10/2023 12:51

@Icefoot disappointing but not surprising.

The thing is OP, you're helping them to fundraise here by posting the link on a very popular public forum.

It's a link to the news article not the fund raiser?

As opposed to the BBC and every other mainstream news site?

I'll take the risk in the hopes of highlighting the sheer scale of the issue in the Met.

Icefoot · 30/10/2023 12:57

I haven't posted the link to the fundraiser.

I was shocked when I saw the footage. How anyone could support those officers is beyond me.

Can’t help feeling if it was a white couple in Lucy and yak they were shoving around people might not be having this fundraiser…

pickledandpuzzled · 30/10/2023 13:00

I was so shocked.

feathermucker · 30/10/2023 13:06

I won't be donating. The officers were in the wrong.

SerendipityJane · 30/10/2023 13:24

Maybe we need fundraisers for convicted rapists ?

Either way I am sure HMRC will be as diligent as ever in ensuring that this unearned income is correctly assessed.

SocksOfMagic · 30/10/2023 13:24

Absolutely shocking, no idea who would support this fundraiser but clearly people with a faulty moral compass

I'm no expert, but I don't think tax is due on gifts?

Why would people donate to this? What am I not understanding here?

Because large number of morons think that being corrupt, lying racists and stopping innocents for DWB is perfectly normal, reasonable Police behaviour.

Have a look at the comments on the article in the Daily Mail.

SocksOfMagic · 30/10/2023 13:28

poor judgment should be noted on the HR files of any police staff supporting this fund raiser. Their actions pulls into question their ability to provide a fair and honest service to the public, free from discrimination

SinnerBoy · 30/10/2023 13:28

Go Fund Me ought to stop the fundraising and give the moolah to Southall Black Sisters, or something similar.

MinnieL · 30/10/2023 13:30

Are we really surprised here? I’m not

I don't think legally they are allowed to divert the money

But I agree the fundraiser should be closed & people's money refunded

It's disgusting. I would look at someone really differently if I knew they had donated to it.

Mumofteenandtween · 30/10/2023 13:39

The argument is that these police officers are being scapegoated.

The unstated argument is that there are loads of police officers doing exactly the same thing but to people who aren’t famous.

I quite agree that it is unfair that only the police officers who lie about famous people are fired. Perhaps the money could go towards legal support towards not famous people who were stopped and lied about due to racial profiling. Then those police officers can be fired as well. That would be much fairer.

SinnerBoy · 30/10/2023 13:41

SausageAndEggSandwich · Today 13:31

It's a shame that they can't reassign the money to a deserving cause.

That's akin to someone claiming that shoplifting is OK, because everyone nicks chocolate from the corner shop...
