Actors who are perfectly cast

Following on from the discussion about actors who are not, who are the ones who are?

To me, Gone Girl was beautifully cast. Ben Affleck as Nick, Rosamund Pike as Amy, all of the minor characters...

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool obviously.

I also came up with many of the names already mentioned upthread. Ian Mclelland as Gandalf, Wiggo Mortensen as Aragorn, Anthony Hopkins as Lecter, Ruth Wilson as Marissa Coulter. To which I'd add:

Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison
Doris Day as Calamity Jane
Diana Rigg as Mrs Danvers
Sienna Miller as Edie Sedgwick
Billie Piper as Suzie Pickles
Hugo Weaving as V
Victor Garber as Jack Bristow

Also, what is it about Anthony Hopkins's ability even to look like the real-life characters he portrays? Notable examples being Captain William Bligh and Pope Benedict.

Ian McKellan as Gandalf

Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow

Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Negan

Robin Williams as Mrs Doubtfire

Leonardo DiCaprio as Gilbert Grape

Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal

Uma Thurman as Black Mamba

Brad Pitt as Cliff Booth

John Travolta as Vincent Vega

Kurt Russel as Stuntman Mike

Jeff Bridges as The Dude

Honestly my list could go on...........

stargirl1701 · 14/10/2023 09:52

Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret.

Whysmithy · 14/10/2023 09:53

Toby Jones in Marvellous and Detectorists

Mackenzie Crook in Detectorists

Kristin Scott Thomas in The English Patient (the whole cast really)

The Gellers in friends make sense. Monica and Ross have black hair like their dad and black hair is the dominant gene

Paul Bettany as Stephen Maturin in Master and Commander! Russell Crowe not so much though.

I think Russell Crowe was quite good and I’m not a fan normally.

Unicorn2022 · 14/10/2023 10:43

Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal
Jodie Comer as Villanelle
Kathy Bates in Misery
John Cleese as Basil Fawlty
Arnold Schwarzenegger as the Terminator
Sigourney Weaver in Alien
Entire cast of Shawshank Redemption and Full Metal Jacket
Judy Garland as Dorothy
Rowan Atkinson as Mr Bean
The whole cast of Ghosts except Mike who is so awful he slightly spoils the programme for me

Megan Follows as Anne of Green Gables and all the cast in that series were just perfect. Even though the plot veers massively away from the books from the sequel onwards I don’t care as the cast is just so perfect. The new version of the story on Netflix was so bad I couldn’t even get through the first episode.

This is a good one. She was perfect for the role.

Most of the actors in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest but particular shout outs to Louise Fletcher as Nurse Ratchett and Brad Dourif as Billy Babbitt.

Actually, Louise Fletcher as Kai Winn in Deep Space Nine too.

DinaofCloud9 · 14/10/2023 12:27

The actress who played Saga in The Bridge.

@Giggorata Brad Dourif is excellent in what ever roles he plays I still remember him playing a murderer in Criminal Minds who makes puppets out of his victims, his character Adam Rain is one of the creepiest characters ever and for Criminal Minds that's saying something, he also played a murderer in Star Trek Voyager

WaterfallOfDreams · 14/10/2023 17:45

Ben Schnetzer as Mark Ashton in Pride.

BearSoFair · 14/10/2023 17:49

Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter
Gwendoline Christie as Brienne of Tarth

Phillip Glenister as Gene Hunt and of course Keely Hawes as Alex "Bolly knickers "

100% this

Deathraystare · 14/10/2023 19:30

I agree with a lot of the above but the one I was anticipating and really eagerly awaiting was the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Naomi Rapace. As soon as she appeared on screen I though Oh yes, perfect! I loved the bit in the video extras when she is in the make up chair and the one playing her violent father comes in and she says "Hi Papa!"

Catsmere · 14/10/2023 21:21

David Ogden Stiers as Major Winchester and Harry Morgan as Colonel Potter.

Rainbowx90 · 14/10/2023 21:31

Christoph Waltz as Hans Landa in Inglorious Basterds 🤌

Louise Fletcher is good, isn't she? I enjoyed her equally as the malevolent grandmother in Flowers in the Attic and the benign one with painful secrets in her past in Finding Home.

The house in Finding Home is also pure property porn. It was the real home of Frederick Law Olmsted, the architect who designed Central Park, and it appeared in Mel Gibson's The Man Without a Face as well. It's currently a holiday home for rent in Deer Isle, ME, and is situated near where my ex used to live (and where we once planned to move!)

Maybe that's another thread in the making: films where the houses/properties in which they are set are characters in their own right. I can think of loads that really captured my attention over the years (including a beautiful NYC apartment).

But I have to admit I have a bit of a fixation on this house in particular.

Longlive · 15/10/2023 19:10

@Happybara I agree with you about Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe. I also read the books back in the 90's through to book 9 recently.

AngeloMysterioso · 15/10/2023 21:22

Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn in The Tudors. Just absolutely perfect.

Jeff Daniels as Will McAvoy in The Newsroom.

Catsmere · 15/10/2023 22:23

Keith Michell as Henry VIII.

Bernard Hepton as Cranmer.
