Does anyone else get Enoch Powell vibes? Makes me shiver....

OP posts:
Libertass · 05/10/2023 20:53

It’s politics. Braverman is setting out her pitch ahead of the Tory leadership election which is expected to follow the party’s defeat at the next general election.
She thinks this will be successful because established centre-right parties all over Europe are facing a choice : Move to the anti-immigration, nativist, anti-woke populist right, appealing to older, less educated voters or be crushed by far right insurgents, as has happened in France.

CurlewKate · 05/10/2023 21:01

@Libertass Yep.
The thought of her as a future prime minister is so awful. But considering that my other prediction is
Nigel Farage....

She's my MP. That's bad enough.

I think I'd have to emigrate if she became PM!

donquixotedelamancha · 05/10/2023 21:11

That seems a bit harsh.

I don't think Enoch Powell was half as intolerent as Suella.

SleepingisanArt · 05/10/2023 21:20

@itsgettingweird - she's my MP too 😭😭😭😭 just foisted upon us as we had someone else (useless) until they changed the constituency boundaries or something. The real fear is she'll keep her seat because here they are such rabid tories I've never seen another candidate from any other party campaigning....

Charlingspont · 05/10/2023 21:32

Enoch Powell is exactly what I thought when I heard/read her speech.

TheThingIsYeah · 05/10/2023 21:35

@CurlewKate @Charlingspont

What did she say in her speech yesterday that gave you those vibes?

bombastix · 05/10/2023 21:39

Enoch Powell was smarter.

Our society has changed; Powell got sacked. Braverman still has a job.

Charlingspont · 05/10/2023 23:19

TheThingIsYeah · 05/10/2023 21:35

@CurlewKate @Charlingspont

What did she say in her speech yesterday that gave you those vibes?

She said "The wind of change that carried my own parents across the globe in the 20th century was a mere gust compared [with] the hurricane that is coming". Reminded me of "rivers of blood" - the use of a metaphor involving forces of nature....

makingforwardprogress · 05/10/2023 23:23

Do you think she recognises that she is evil? Or thinks she is a good person?

Boomboom22 · 05/10/2023 23:27

Everyone thinks they are a good person. The nazis thought they were excellent people, clearly not.

bombastix · 05/10/2023 23:27

Irony is that Powell specifically would have excluded her father as an Asian from Kenya.

"Winds of change" however is Macmillan, referring to the decision that the Conservative Party would no longer support colonialism in Africa. That was in 1960. Labour was pro decolonization but the Conservatives had not been until this speech.

An interesting choice of language by the Home Secretary.

callmeamy · 09/11/2023 09:33

I see in her new constituency of Fareham of Waterlooville Braverman's seat is consideralbly less secure - see predictions at
https://www.electoralcalculus.co.uk/fcgi-bin/calcwork23.py?seat=Fareham%20and%20Waterlooville

Predicted total votes Braverman = 36%, Labour 30.5%, Lib Dem 18.9% - surely there is a very strong case for the Lib Dem voters to vote tactically for the Labour candidate in the national interest. Imagine the joy across the land if she is defeated!

newnamethanks · 09/11/2023 09:47

She's an opportunistic populist who, for some unfathomable reason, has been convinced by her backers that if she keeps repeating that she knows 'what the British people want' voters will
flock to her in droves. Maybe she's the only politician daft enough to agree to front this garbage? For an apparently clever woman she's very stupid. A poisonous provocateur.

Ed Davey has completely condemned her today. He needs to put his money where his mouth is at the GE.

bombastix · 09/11/2023 10:30

She is a nasty piece of work; this is a woman who wants the police to have the power to enter your house without needing a warrant, amongst other things.

This. Awful excuse for an human being.

BitOutOfPractice · 09/11/2023 10:33

I doubt that anyone who’s been on an even vaguely left-leaning march / rally thinks the police favours them!

I certainly don’t think the women at the vigil for Sarah Everard believe they were favoured.

There are many things the met have done that I find unforgivable. Favouring the “woke” is not one of them.

You really don’t know?

caramac04 · 09/11/2023 10:36

I find her opinions scary. Is she evil? I don’t know the answer to that but she has no empathy or compassion for anyone and so I think she is dangerous.

fearfuloffluff · 09/11/2023 10:36

She's highly calculating that being a brown person spouting racist hateful bilge will make hateful white people feel good about their bigotry and therefore support her. I don't believe that she actually believes it herself, it's a posture she's adopting to get the most support.

I don't think she's stupid at all, it's quite an effective strategy. She either gets publicity for outrageous statements or she gets sacked, which gets her even more publicity.

bombastix · 09/11/2023 10:38

The most racially diverse cabinet in history has the most racist policies I have ever seen. Amazing really

saraclara · 09/11/2023 10:41

She will almost undoubtedly be the next Tory leader. The party is headed further and further to the right, and outside of my liberal bubble, there is a large proportion of the electorate who are very happy for it to do so.

It's very, very depressing.

SinnerBoy · 09/11/2023 10:56

At least being horrible in Parliament is keeping her from her preferred occupation of skinning Dalmatian puppies for coats ..

😃

SinnerBoy · 09/11/2023 10:57

Oh, Suella, not Cruella...
