.....this year? It's one of my favourite shows but I'm not sure if I'm going to watch it.

Also Jonathon Ross - he made a joke the other day on a show about his dog licking his dick. So even if mainstream tv hasn’t cancelled him yet, I have in my personal viewing.

CurlewKate · 20/09/2023 18:27

@Childcarequestionn "How do you know they remain friends?"

Well, they were certainly friends during lockdown-they worked together.

I really like the concept of the programme, but I don’t like Noel Fielding particularly - he isn’t funny and I’m not sure I will like Alison Hammond but I will give it a go. I too hate the Paul Hollywood handshake its so cringy. I liked it when Mary Berry was on and Mel and Sue presented it.

Actually, considering how widespread the knowledge of Brand's behaviour was, I'd expect any friend who was a decent human being would drop him. I think badly of Fielding for not. And I've just seen a video of him and Brand making a very unpleasant rape joke in Big Fat Quiz of the Year. And he says he was "friends" with Pixie Geldof. He was over 30-she was16......

I don't think anyone really knows whether they actually dated. There was one gossip piece at the time which made a reference to them 'canoodling' or something at one event at a club in Camden. It was a rumour but I don't think it was ever confirmed.

Pixie Geldof as well as being over the age of consent, at the time was a model and an 'it girl' on the London party scene, who was out drinking in pubs and clubs and also dated a man in his 20s that year. Much like Kate Moss and a lot of other famous girls on the London social scene at that time, she was leading a very adult lifestyle from the age of 14-15 onwards, working and hanging out with adult friends. Do I think that's a good thing? No. But it wasn't actually unusual at the time.

I don't think that Noel Fielding (possibly) dating Pixie Geldof (who was part of his social circle and a regular on the social scene and in all the gossip mags, and was to all intents and purposes living the life of an adult woman and hanging out with both his male and female friends) is remotely equivalent to Russell Brand deliberately grooming a very naive teenager who had never had a boyfriend, who he'd never met and was not in showbusiness and was shopping with her mates in Topshop when he approached her, and then encouraging her to read Lolita, fetishising her virginity, sending cars to her school to take her out of lessons and bring her to his house for sex, and violently sexually assaulting her. I'm sorry, but the two situations are just not the same.

What's the problem with Noel Fielding? This is like a really shit game of 20 questions.

😂😂😂

Also for those not watching, can I recommend the Great Pottery Throw Down? Because honestly, watching a grown man cry about pottery is so wholesome.

I love the pottery throw down but increasing have some concerns for Keith's welfare. I mean he cries every week!

But a lot nicer than GBBO and the male yob comics on it.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 20/09/2023 18:31

I haven't watched since Noel and Matt were awful to poor Jurgen. It's not been the same since it moved to channel 4. I liked Sandi but Noel and Matt are awful together. Not sure how Alison Hammond will get on.

Noel Fielding dated Pixie Geldof when she was 16 and he was in his 30s.

Unless it's illegal there's no issue. Since when did dating someone much younger but over the legal age of consent become the elder person must be a pervert or coerced the younger person. Unless Pixie has come out and said it was an abusive relationship I don't see the issue

Carouselfish · 20/09/2023 18:33

How odd this thread is.
Matt Lucas is the only one who isn't funny off the cuff. Noel is great at being disarming and amusing.

Purplewarrior · 20/09/2023 18:33

FFS! Just when you think posters couldn't get any more stupid!

CurlewKate · 20/09/2023 18:33

"Okay. Except we only found out the allegations last week. We have to imagine that Noel did too. Unless you have proof otherwise?"

I think it's extremely unlikely that Fielding found out last week when everyone else has known for years! Including me-and I am as far from the celebrity world as it is possible to be.

I notice you haven't commented on the rape joke?

Noel does look like a Poundland RB, which is impressive considering how cheap RB looks.

Ha ha! Well said

I liked it when Mary Berry was on and Mel and Sue presented it.

It was so much better when it was on BBC. Nadiya is my personal fav winner ever. BBC series 6. Love her so much.

I have to say I'm surprised at the venom in these responses. You won't watch because someone on the show knew someone who is now in trouble? Really! It's a cooking competition. If you don't want to watch it - don't. If you don't like the hosts, don 't watch the show. Brand was on the show before the problems emerged and now you're blaming the show. Unbelievable. I enjoy watching, I ignore the corny hosts and root for my favorite. If the show no longer brings you pleasure, than don't watch it!

I agree.

Totallyterrific · 20/09/2023 18:41

Im with you @CurlewKate I think. I switched off Bakeoff when Matt was in it anyway, not tempted to watch this new series. As someone above said Noel is rather like a poundland version of Russell. Not what I want in my head really.

ginasevern · 20/09/2023 18:24

@bemorelemmy

You don't have to view rape jokes and all the other bile that pours out of mens' mouths through a past lens. It's still happening, they're still doing it. In fact they're doing exactly what they like and we are conditioned to it.

absolutely i would judge a contemporary rape joke bloody harshly- show me the comedian and I'll heckle- we live in a very different time than even 10 years ago- so yeah, as is the practice of our times, rape jokes are beyond the pale and thank god for that. what I am able to do is understand that people behave according to the time they live in. be grateful you're not famous because there will be beliefs that you hold dear today that would otherwise have future you pilloried and made a pariah

You are basing your whole Noel Fielding argument on 'extremely unlikely', but you dont know anything for definite do you?

Ohhh I didn’t know that, ugh.

misssunshine4040 · 20/09/2023 18:45

That joke with Russell, Noel and Jonathan Ross wasn't mocking rape or laughing at people being raped.
It was about Noel dressed in cape and others saying he looks like Jack the Ripper etc
The context is important.

MartyFunkhouser · 20/09/2023 18:46

I don’t watch it. But I like Alison so might watch it to see her.

Oh FGS, you're saying you and everyone else knew Russell Brand was an alleged rapist going back to lock down... Even though the women only came forward recently. Yeah right.

I'll be watching I love Bake off. I love it for the contestants though, not the presenters.
