Talking of Barclay, I don’t suppose there’s any word on what he’s planning to do to deal with a winter crisis beyond the few extra beds for some hospitals he promised by January/March.

BIossomtoes · 19/09/2023 11:26

I don’t think we have a winter crisis any more. We have a year round shitshow.

What's the betting they spin this as an acheivement, having no winter NHS crisis anymore because of them.

Do you mean the 5,000 beds or the actual 900 beds?
The 900 haven't been installed I don't think (nor the extra staff required).

Nor have the additional ambulances which are needed to replace old ones.

NEW: Following Birmingham City Council’s (effective) bankruptcy notice Michael Gove has announced he will send central government commissioners to run the city,

Commissioners will likely oversee the sale of council assets, job cuts, council tax rises…

Scrapping Building Schools for the Future not looking like such a smart move now..

IClaudine · 19/09/2023 15:57

TW this is upsetting. Humiliating and possible torture of asylum seekers/migrants.

I feel so ashamed of my country. People who fled here to escape torture and persecution were imprisoned and tortured and persecuted. This is where the rhetoric of hate leads.

A former detainee on the radio earlier said they were so dehumanised they weren't even referred to by their names, just their room numbers. He said he was there for a month and in that time didn't see the sun as they weren't allowed out of the building. He was there as the Home Office were trying to deport him. His asylum claim was eventually granted. Not that it makes any difference as they shouldn't be treating anyone like this, refugee or not.

Education Secretary Gillian Keegan claims kids are happier in temporary classrooms than crumbling schools

She told MPs: "The first school I went to the children were all petitioning me to stay in the Portakabin because they actually preferred it to the classroom."

OP posts:
Notonthestairs · 19/09/2023 17:27

Isn't that a fairly damning assessment of the state of the classrooms?

Piggywaspushed · 19/09/2023 17:28

It's extraordinary.

Cornettoninja · 19/09/2023 17:30

I’m sure all the kids really love the bleak prospect of a future without chance of financial independence, home ownership, retirement whilst the world chokes on capitalism.

they prefer it in fact…

Cornettoninja · 19/09/2023 17:33

I can’t even bring myself to read that BBC asylum seeker report right at this second.

I genuinely feel like I’m becoming desensitised to these reports out of necessity because it feels like it’s never going to end. I don’t want that.

Notonthestairs · 19/09/2023 17:38

Reading IClaudine's and pointything's articles together really lays out how warped our system has become. What is the point of having a Home Office if they don't take responsibility and act when needed?
It's nothing to do with money and everything to do with attitude and that comes from the top.

DuncinToffee · 19/09/2023 17:40

It's dehumanising people, no wonder they are so hot on leaving the ECHR

OP posts:
DuncinToffee · 19/09/2023 17:44

If the RB coverage was to bury a news story, it could well be this investigation on the inhumane treatment of vulnerable refugees

(I don't think it is but it would be a better excuse than BJ)
