I can't imagine it will be a proper press conference, Sunak is so bad at those.

It’s all feeling more and more like Scott Morrison, Albanese and the Australian general election of 2022

In what way @DuncinToffee ? Sorry am not very familiar with Aus politics.

Does anyone think there is any possibility of a GE this year? Would be a nice early Christmas present (hopefully!)

Looking forward to seeing Sunak squirm later today,

DuncinToffee · 20/09/2023 13:46

It is what Goodall said in his tweet, he is a bit of an election nerd Smile

All I know is that Labor's Albanese beat Morrison

Oh sorry! I will have a delve later.

I have just seen a thread where loads of folk are saying it is actually OK that kids are having to be moved to huts to learn in, because the conditions in huts are often superior to the main school buildings. How has is come to this, that folk will accept this shit and continue to defend the Tories?

mibbelucieachwell · 20/09/2023 14:34

I've been 'there' too @IClaudine . Confused

Maybe I’ve misjudged this country and it’s actually stuffed full of optimists?

Of course the portacabins are better than classrooms - they’re there because the buildings are piles of shit!

Mmmm this gruel is much better than the soles of shoes I’ve been boiling up!

interesting daily YouGov poll today:

In today’s chat, we’re asking for your thoughts on the debate around assisted dying, or 'euthanasia' as its sometimes known...

did wonder when this debate would get more mainstream traction - 1 way of dealing with the care crisis.🙄

Notonthestairs · 20/09/2023 15:48

And with perfect timing, the 2023 Tory Conference Agenda is published, and its slogan is...

waaaaaait for it....

... "LONG-TERM DECISIONS FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE"

SAS doctors (speciality & associate specialists - non consultant grade, very experienced & critical part of the NHS workforce in my view) are going to ballot for strike action.

We really do need a serious attempt to get relevant parties together. It's not good enough to keep the door open but refuse to engage.
Decent health services contribute to economic productivity.

pointythings · 20/09/2023 16:08

My directorate runs on SA and Specialty doctors. I've seen their pay scales. They deserve a rise and if they strike, the impact on patient care for us will be massive. Our directorate is all about specialist mental health and these people keep the service afloat.

Few quick tweets before we hear from Inaction Man

BREAKING: Speaker Lindsay Hoyle blasts Sunak for failing to make his statement on net zero policies in Parliament.

Spox: “If he had the power, the Speaker would recall the House immediately.”

“Ministers are answerable to MPs - we do not have a presidential system here.”

https://x.com/realBenBloch/status/1704509466463350891?s=20

I'm told one argument Sunak will use to justify delaying the 2030 carbon targets is "the National Grid will fall over" on current electricity demand projections...
... so just a reminder of what the Grid actually says about this... but maybe Tufton Street's experts say different?

The slogan is on his lectern as well Grin

Wonder if he will turn up dressed as a pilot.....

MrTiddlesTheCat · 20/09/2023 16:36

Here's hoping 'long-term decisions for a brighter future' is code for 'calling a general election so the public can vote some grown ups into power'.

Piggywaspushed · 20/09/2023 16:39

I'd love to know if they did any focus group work on that slogan??

Probably The Apprentice style, find one person who says something positive and ignore everyone else

Well this is a very odd speech, he looks pissed off and generally sad (and so he might).

Who made all of these policies, that he's now basically saying are terrible/unnecessary/unfair on 'the British people?'

Just weird, all of it!

IClaudine · 20/09/2023 16:55

That just looks like a spoof, doesn't it.

His speech ain't exactly barnstorming, is it? He looks like he's had enough of being PM.

Is that brighter as in ‘the whole bloody planet is on fire.’

TokyoSushi · 20/09/2023 16:57

But to be fair, if your family had a net worth of £750m or whatever, could you even be arsed with any of this? I don't really even know why he's doing it. And I suspect it's dawning on him that he doesn't either. I really don't think he'll fight the next election and will sack this all off soon enough.

RafaistheKingofClay · 20/09/2023 16:58

You’d think they’d have realised that those blue background bullet point images were just asking for trouble by now.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 20/09/2023 17:04

I'm confused, which is not unusual. Sunak is giving a press conference as PM, about today's cabinet decisions, right? So why does the lecturn have the tory conference slogan on it? I thought that wasn't allowed.

DuncinToffee · 20/09/2023 17:12

I think we are all confused by this

It's not allowed.

I bet it's something as ridiculous as they didn't expect to make this speech here, today and the lectern was already prepped for the party conference.
