Distracting us from climate climb down?

No they don't want that being buried, it will all be made public in Sunak's upcoming speech

https://x.com/hzeffman/status/1704179144727150607?s=20

Rishi Sunak is considering changing some of the government's key green commitments.

Could include:

  • Delaying ban on new petrol and diesel cars from 2030 to 2035
  • Softening plans to phase out gas boilers.

Speech in coming days

  • No new energy efficiency rules for landlords
  • Off-grid oil boilers phase out delayed
  • No new taxes to discourage flying
  • No government policies to change people's diets

NEW: Following Birmingham City Council’s (effective) bankruptcy notice Michael Gove has announced he will send central government commissioners to run the city,

Commissioners will likely oversee the sale of council assets, job cuts, council tax rises…

What price democracy? Presumably unless it’s Brexit it doesn’t count.

Notonthestairs · 19/09/2023 19:09

Parliament is now in recess until 16th October. But that's fine because everything is running perfectly.

Notonthestairs · 19/09/2023 20:06

Some Tory MPs VERY surprised about the suggestions Rishi Sunak will push back petrol / diesel car ban from 2030 to 2035.

One calls it “anti business”, means Sunak breaking a promise he made in private to Tory MPs and says, unprompted, “I’m seriously considering a no confidence letter”

I don't know why I'm laughing. The idiots think they can change leader again.

I can’t even bring myself to read that BBC asylum seeker report right at this second.

I genuinely feel like I’m becoming desensitised to these reports out of necessity because it feels like it’s never going to end. I don’t want that.

Same here, it just so bloody utterly soul destroying.
thanks for the thread duncin & all contributors.

Parliament is now in recess until 16th October

🤯

A whole month out for conferences, so each party can do a group hug, brilliant way of achieving things.

Education Secretary Gillian Keegan claims kids are happier in temporary classrooms than crumbling schools

She told MPs: "The first school I went to the children were all petitioning me to stay in the Portakabin because they actually preferred it to the classroom."

That's because the potacabins often have proper heating, air con and decent toilets!

We have some "temporary classrooms" (these are actually permanent buildings and not due to RAAC) and they are the best classrooms in the school!

But I still thinks kids would prefer decent classrooms actually in a school building if they were offered rather than a temporary one they have to keep going out in the rain to get to!

It's amazing is it not that Sunak delays announcing rowing back on policies until Parliament closes.

Same policies that a few days ago they were swearing they would abide by.

Ford manufacturing isn't too happy...

It's not like we wanted to strengthen manufacturing or anything.

'Our business needs three things from the UK govt: ambition, commitment & consistency. A relaxation of 2030 would undermine all three.’

I’m shocked economic guru Rishi seems to have only done a business gcse.

Chin up petal, one day you’ll make a decision that’s respected on the world stage (hint - GE)

Cornettoninja · 20/09/2023 10:05

It feels like when global markets almost instantly reacted to Liz and Kwasi’s financial announcements.

They think they know what capitalism wants. It’s play school politics

DuncinToffee · 20/09/2023 10:51

BMW unhappy as well

'Ministers are understood to have promised BMW that they would not relax targets as part of negotiations to secure a £600 million investment to build electric Minis in Oxford rather than China'. What is it they say about a week in politics?

NEW: Sunak has just summoned a Cabinet.

Looks like we may be hearing the new Net Zero plan today.....

It does look like this was a significant leak either from a disgruntled MP (?) or someone wanting to push the changes through and who seized the initiative.

Sunak was definitely caught on the hop.

Also interesting that it came so quickly after the Truss speech.

Wonder how Sharma, Gove and Skidmore will react.

Notonthestairs · 20/09/2023 11:27

David Jones (ex Welsh sec) will not be standing at the next election.

TokyoSushi · 20/09/2023 12:17

Found you! Glory be, it looks like another big nail in the Tory coffin today, I think an election is creeping closer...

Lonelycrab · 20/09/2023 12:27

Such a blatant, cynical attempt to claw back some support by Sunak. Can’t see that it’s going to work, he may gain a few back that would otherwise be voting for reform but that’s not going to swing it.
If, judging by the reaction from business and perhaps his MPs too, this backfires on him he’s even more screwed than he is already. Yes, nails in coffin time I hope.

Eon is next to join the Woke list

https://x.com/emilygosden/status/1704445957574721794?s=20

Energy giant E.ON joins criticism of government plans to water down green pledges… says it risks “condemning people to many more years of living in cold and draughty homes that are expensive to heat, in cities clogged with dirty air from fossil fuels”

No greater sign of panic than an emergency press conference.

Sunak 4.30pm today.

He's a fool. People are far more switched on to green issues than they were, he might gain a few of the typical 'not me, don't care about the planet' voters but he'll lose a huge swathe of younger voters

DuncinToffee · 20/09/2023 13:15

Via Lewis Goodall

I’ve seen the agenda for today’s Cabinet

RECOMMENDATIONS INCLUDE

-“Delay the off-gas-grid fossil fuel ban until 2035 and relax the requirement from 100% to 80% of households”
-“Relax the gas boiler phase-out target in 2035”
-“no new energy efficiency regulations on homes”
-“Increase the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant by 50% to £7500”
-“Announce the the requirement for all vehicles to have significant zero emission capability in the period 2030-35 is to be removed”

Bonfire of green measures…
IN ADDITION agenda says cabinet will commit to

-“No edit change measures to reduce carbon emissions”
-“Announce that households will not be required to have 7 bins to meet recycling targets”
-Commit to no new taxes on passengers to discourage flying.

Some of this wasn’t on the agenda anyway is clearly political, designed to draw dividing lines with Labour. Countdown to general election is well and truly on.
It’s all feeling more and more like Scott Morrison, Albanese and the Australian general election of 2022…

Is it an actual, real life press conference, where the press get to ask him questions that he attempts to answer. Or a shit government press conference where he makes a statement, with a silent press in attendance.

And more importantly, has he worked on sounding like a PM rather than a Cbeebie's presenter?
