DW ..... bleugh ☹️

Guy Fawkes is coming soon, throw your DW books on the bonfire to burn rather than charity shop them. Keep them out of circulation forever.

Woman2023 · 27/09/2023 07:14

Black face was extremely offensive at the time. Those characters were meant to be grotesque. The whole thing about Little Britain was its over the top offensiveness. Should they have employed a fit black man to portray the fat black woman? Would that have made the show better?

localnotail · 27/09/2023 07:15

@Feelingfree2023 I totally understand your desire to protect your little boy, you are a good mum. But if you seen Little Britain you would know Walliams' style, he is not nice to anyone. Tbh, I was really surprised when I found out he writes children's books, he just seemed so unsuitable; but reading them I realised they are in a way similar to Little Britain sketches - though nowhere near as funny.

can I just ask what you found funny about Little Britain? Genuinely, I have never understood why it was meant to be funny.

Woman2023 · 27/09/2023 07:17

I can't stand DW, I just think apologising for the offensiveness of a show based on offensive comedy is a bit strange. A bit like the Sex Pistols suddenly apologising for being sweary punks.

I've heard rumours about him as well. And Keith Lemon.

And that makes it fact does it ?

By the way Lemon isn't real

And yet I was a voracious reader as a child because of Enid Blyton. I read virtually everything of hers then worked my way round every classic children's book (E Nesbit, Noel Streatfeild, PL Travers etc) that I could get my hands on and then just anything and everything, Virtually a book a day.
All started by Enid Blyton.

Me too, I adored her books and all the children’s classics, and George will always be my hero 😊

SoShallINever · 27/09/2023 07:36

It's not good enough to say Little Britain was a parody of itself. If it looks like racism or disablism it is racism or disablism, however you dress it up.
I remember writing on here years ago about Anne (the mentally ill character), I was working in a school for children with autism at the time and many were non verbal. I remember the taunts from other teenagers and even adults in the street, making that "urgh, urgh, urgh" noise at them, the noise that Williams did when he was dressed as her character. I would like him to spend a week, working with those kids or better still a week with the parents who had to watch their kids get taunted because of that horrible git.
Hate his smugness and his inability to see that he isn't funny, he is spiteful.

GrammarTeacher · 27/09/2023 07:37

@SoShallINever this. Dreadful show that encouraged the worst type of bullying

BeverleyMacker · 27/09/2023 07:52

I've heard from various sources that the guys who were pulled up on stage are plants.

Towdalinenow · 27/09/2023 07:56

Plants or not, it’s still making a mockery of sexual assault/ harassment and bullying

Hiding in plain sight again

NeedToThinkOfOne · 27/09/2023 07:56

So many of you miss the irony, that a character who contributes to MN threads with nonsense along the lines of ‘he nearly stood on my dog’s paw once, what a creep’ would be a great fit for Little Britain, if it was made again today.

cheezncrackers · 27/09/2023 07:57

I met him once and came away from the meeting convinced he's a narcissist. He's got that slick charm that isn't natural, he just turns it on and off, very creepy.

BlurredEdges · 27/09/2023 07:58

Ramalangadingdong · 27/09/2023 01:26

That’s hilarious! I love it.

It's rubbish. Marjorie Dawes was a character on Shooting Stars before MN was even created.

This person @LaffTaff nade it up in an attempt to be insulting, but it didn't really work.

GrammarTeacher · 27/09/2023 08:00

BeverleyMacker · 27/09/2023 07:52

I've heard from various sources that the guys who were pulled up on stage are plants.

Mark Ronson was NOT a plant.

Worriedaboutpp · 27/09/2023 06:00

I agree with this. Don't judge Dahl from a completely different time and from a different culture, with our values today. He did so much for the medical profession (even invented a valve to treat hydrocephalus) and ultimately he also formed the stroke association. An absolutely astounding person.

Roald Dahl was an extreme antisemite. He said it himself, openly and publicly.

I'm Jewish and still love his books and so do my children.

However, let's not make stuff up about what a great person he was.

BackFromABreak · 27/09/2023 08:01

I know direct from the girls involved
of him messaging two 16/17 year olds on Instagram.

MeridianB · 27/09/2023 08:03

Someone bought one of his books for us and it was the first and last time one came into the house. I hate that this garbage is promoted as 'the world of DW' trying to position him as the new Roald Dahl.

I hadn't heard the ghost-written rumour but it makes sense as there are about a million of bloody things.

peppermintcrisp · 27/09/2023 08:09

Why are people banning his book from their house? Genuine question. Plenty of kids books are rubbish quality so what is it specifically about these - the poor stories or is it a dislike of the author?

I have had arguments in book shops about not buying his books for my children.

I will not have a book of his in the house and my DC are between 14 - and 20 so this was some time ago.

He created Little Britain. How can you credibly move to writing books for children? I am amazed schools have promoted his work!

Furryrug · 27/09/2023 08:17

DW says he loves cruelty , there he is telling us who he is .

Towdalinenow · 27/09/2023 08:18

If he is cancelled, will be a boon for all those children’s authors who aren’t celebrities! He absolutely dominates book shops and supermarket book shelves.

Imagine the mountain of books that would need to be pulped😮

Fran2023 · 27/09/2023 08:19

Can’t stand him. Always seemed grubby and sleazy with distinct overtones of misogyny. Never gone near his books although it upsets me to see how popular his are when there are so many great children’s writers.

Towdalinenow · 27/09/2023 08:19

@Furryrug yep hiding in plain sight again.

MuckyPlucky · 27/09/2023 08:22

His books, like his TV shows, “punch down” (ie: sneeringly mock those less privileged / white / male / middle class / able-bodied / English / celeb than he is.)

I do not allow my children to sneeringly mock others, ergo I do not allow them to read his horrible books and be influenced by them.

Fran2023 · 27/09/2023 08:23

Little Britain was all about punching down. Two white, well educated, privileged men putting up the vulnerable for ridicule. Cruel and nasty.
