The report makes this sound racist, but the perpetrator is not white.

Vile behaviour whether there was a theft being committed or not - the whole community needs to boycott that shop. You do not grab anyone by their neck for stealing a few hair products.

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 13/09/2023 00:19

The community has protested and are boycotting the shop. Terrible situation.

It was anti-black. Anti-blackness is not limited to the white population.

There’s something called misogynoir which is basically misogyny against black women. Black men can even be perpetrators of it, so this violent man in the shop not being white is neither here nor there.

There is a problem with these shops which sell black hair products being owned and run by non black people who are often - not always- extremely rude to the black women who shop there. This incident is part of a wider and long standing problem.

Yes, it's quite odd.

Maybe the shop owner is white-adjacent?

parfaitamour · 13/09/2023 00:40

Having watched the video of the incident, the man was escorting her back into the shop after she helped herself to some products, AKA shoplifting, she then used a shopping basket to hit him round the head several times, and then he started to get violent as well with her, hand around her neck to restrain her. Both of them being violent.
No white people people involved.
However the lady was creating a scene to start with. She started the violence.
Am I condoning any of the violence? Nope, but she is not some utterly blameless customer.

It's not only white people who are racist.

Characterbuilding · 13/09/2023 00:48

People do realise that "non-white" people can be racist toward black people?
(in many scenarios and countries black people are frequently treated appallingly by other races).

parfaitamour · 13/09/2023 00:49

Actually, Since I wasn't there, the claim she was shoplifting may or may not be the case. Yet it seems fair to look at all the videos circulating, that show a real shindig of people slapping each other about. Without a continuous timeline, hard to know what occurred first.

Let's hope this doesn't lead to an escalation though. Bad shopkeepers, and bad customers, are all over.

My local post office mistress is overseas born, Malaysian, and there's nothing she likes more than a racist moan about her fellow Indian born co-workers perceived incompetence.

Hes so much bigger than her! He could have just stood in her way and blocked her route, ignored her slap, called the police. Instead he assaults her, then puts his hands around her neck. Who knows how much pressure he placed on her windpipe. She whacks him with the basket mid strangle, an attempt to escape her vulnerable situation. It must have been frightening for her, being at risk of serious injury. It’s general knowledge that strangulation is a precursor to murder

Agreed, and she also appears to lash out to hit him beforehand. As you say, both appear to be violent actions, and nothing can excuse his behaviour. Both things can be true.

Look at the size difference. I doubt she could hurt him.

How did she start the violence? Since when is it ok to restrain a shoplifter (if that’s what she was) by putting your hands around their neck?

Not sure if she even left the premises as she was carrying a shop basket, which would indicate perhaps not. The man ‘escorted’ her into the middle of the shop with both his hands around her neck. When she tried to get out of this dangerous and violent hold by hitting him with a flimsy plastic basket, he put his hands around her throat and dragged her across the shop like a rag doll.

DeeCeeCherry · 13/09/2023 03:51

She's been released without charge, and the police are returning to speak to the store owner.

YoongiMarryMe · 13/09/2023 04:08

What the fuck are people watching? It clearly starts with HIM reaching out and shoving her and then becoming increasingly violent.

He shoves/hits out twice before she retaliates and hits out at him and he reacts to that by grabbing her by the throat! At this point she swings the basket at him in SELF DEFENCE. Jesus Christ.

anunlikelyseahorse · 13/09/2023 05:16

He violently attacked her. He has her by the throat, of course she's going to swing the basket at him...,he's effing well trying to kill her.
I hope he's arrested and charged with attempted murder. Absolutely no excuse for his behaviour.

Phillipson · 13/09/2023 05:36

First of all, she got arrested for assault???? That’s foul, he goes out of his way to attack her.

secondly I don’t know where @parfaitamour got “shoplifting” from, because the man was asked to make a comment and he said a dispute over a refund. I’m sure if she was a thief, he would have said as to not ruin his reputation further? Plus she wasn’t arrested for shoplifting!

This is MN, black women are always in the wrong no matter what happens. Look at the poot woman who was killed by a police officer while sitting in her car, posters were falling over themselves to blame her for her own murder.

Bramblecrumble22 · 13/09/2023 05:44

The definition of racism is treating different races differently. That man could be violent to anyone shoplifting, he is not the racist part. He doesn't have to be white to be racist. An abuser in a biracial couple is not racist. Indiscriminatly racist.

The racism and sexism here is the police arresting her for assault and not the man.
