Regardless of what went on prior to the video you can clearly see a tall, powerfully-built man with both hands around her neck in a choke hold.

Was she really the one to be arrested, or could that be misreporting?

I don't know why black women shop in these stores instead of black-owned ones.

Hermittrismegistus · 13/09/2023 00:31

The report makes this sound racist, but the perpetrator is not white

Maybe the shop owner is white-adjacent?

It's nit just white people who can be racist. There's racism in every communities.

Phillipson · 13/09/2023 06:00

I checked the twitter videos and there’s nothing to suggest she was shoplifting. She starts off by walking to the till with a receipt to return something. No audio recorded so people are just making their own narrative up as to how the conversation went. The later videos show The Guardian article video from other angles, plus there’s an extra video where they’re both slapping each other. The videos recorded by a witness really show the size difference.

Even if she was stealing, the shop staff need to have a proper protocol to deal with suspected theft. An “anything, including strangling, goes” approach isn’t a good look. It’s fine saying shoplifters deserve whatever comes to them, but what happens if they choke someone who they wrongfully suspect of theft ?

TypicalCoach · 13/09/2023 06:06

Lol the video clearly shows she is on the Rob as why would the shopkeeper be blocking her exit if she was just returning what previously was purchased.
She then assaults him, I'm sorry but if your going to assault someone twice the size of you dont be surprised that when they use self defence that they are bigger and stronger than you.
Becoming like the USA everyday the UK, the same people that defend her will be the same people moaning when like the USA there are food deserts in the UK because shops will close.
This country in ten years is going to be one big shithole and its getting worse each day.

lollipoprainbow · 13/09/2023 06:17

Maybe he's been plagued by shoplifters and he snapped. The police turn a blind eye to it anyway as it seems to be rife, funny how they then take the shoplifters side. Anyway I'm sure his livelihood is ruined now.

Museya15 · 13/09/2023 06:17

Thank god no white people were involved in this (phew). Yes, he should never have attacked her, really violent the whole thing and hard to watch.

Phillipson · 13/09/2023 06:18

@TypicalCoach It’s interesting that you need to paint the victim in the worst possible light to be able to defend the man’s actions, isn’t it? It’s not clear that she was stealing or that she attacked him “first”. None of her actions warrant that OTT reaction. You can’t just choke members of the public! That can result in death.

SoRainbowRhythms · 13/09/2023 06:24

No man should lay hands on any woman. Ever. I can't believe there's even a sniff of defence for him.

SerpentEndBench · 13/09/2023 06:29

My god I can't believe anybody would lol about a man putting his hands around a woman's neck. Oh wait, yes I can.

User98866 · 13/09/2023 06:31

It’s absolutely shocking. That level of violence in public is not something we’re used to seeing and I’m haunted by that image of that poor ladies face. Imagine what he’s like in private. I’m sure we will hear his side of the story next week in a sadface daily mail article about how he ‘just snapped’ after a long line of shoplifting, his mental health, bla bla.

BethDuttonsTwin · 13/09/2023 06:39

There are multiple clips, from different angles of this, including one where she follows him down the shop as he walks away, and hits him as hard as she can repeatedly - at least five times, without him retaliating at all. I’d like to see them all in sequence/context before I start screaming racism/misogyny etc and demanding that he lose his entire livelihood. Hands round throats are never justifiable though.

Do you have a link to that clip? I can't find it.

lollipoprainbow · 13/09/2023 07:12

It's out there with her trying to walk out with an armful of stuff from the shop. He tries to block her way and she hits him.

JoyceBarry · 13/09/2023 07:19

why would the shopkeeper be blocking her exit if she was just returning what previously was purchased.
Because he can, because he was angry. Men have been attacking women since the beginning of time and astonishingly sometimes it isn't the woman's fault.

Yeah, she seems to have started the violence. Hands on the neck looks awful but what's he meant to do, risk losing an eye?

If I had someone coming for me like that, I think I'd do the same.

Simonjt · 13/09/2023 05:41

This is MN, black women are always in the wrong no matter what happens. Look at the poot woman who was killed by a police officer while sitting in her car, posters were falling over themselves to blame her for her own murder.

Thankfully most posters were not falling over themselves to blame the poor woman for her murder. Much as there are posts vilifying the woman in this incident, the majority of posters on MN are appalled by the way black people are treated, eg police shootings, predominantly in the US, young black girls stripped searched and anecdotes from posters illustrating white people are more likely to be ‘let off’ not paying a train fare when there are reports of black kids being manhandled.

LittleBrenda · 13/09/2023 07:33

You would have to be very sure that you were much stronger than them. Most people would push of kick someone attacking them.

But you and this large man would go for the less instinctive throttle.

Thisweeksname · 13/09/2023 07:36

Maybe don’t shoplift if you don’t want any trouble. Obviously the force is excessive but many London shops have been having issues with shoplifting and even organized looting, particularly in the black community.

OnAFrolicOfMyOwn · 13/09/2023 07:42

Awful that a woman could be choked like that, no matter what led up to it.

HairyKitty · 13/09/2023 07:52

🙄🙄🙄Regardless of the facts of what actually happened (which no one here knows!!!) it isn’t racist to arrest a black womanly for assault and not a black man. It’s SEXIST.
I wonder who’s benefitting from stirring up tensions by misreporting the race element in this.

IClaudine · 13/09/2023 07:55

It looks to me from the two timestamped videos on Twitter that the woman hitting him came after he tried to strangle her. I'd be raging too if someone had done that to me.

IClaudine · 13/09/2023 08:00

The Guardian video shows a timestamp of 12:59 for the strangling incident. The clip of her hitting him is 13:01. She is a braver woman than me, going after him like that. But good for her.

Westfacing · 13/09/2023 08:02

Thank you @BethDuttonsTwin

One of the clips seems to show she was the first to lash out, as she's passing the till. Still no need for the choke hold though.

That is not what the shopkeeper himself says?
