Which foods do you rarely see on menus now? I was watching some old adverts on YouTube for Little Chef and such which made me think of this.

Do you still get melon as a starter? I used to love that as a child. Also a glass of orange juice as a starter. I went to a hotel in around 2010 and they still had that as an option on the menu. I found it rather charming.

Steak Diane (French mustard and brandy IIRC)
Tournedos Rossini
Cockles in mustard sauce
Crepes suzette, flambeed at the table
Deep fried brie with cranberry sauce, although I saw this in a restaurant recently

Not that I miss any of these!

Does anyone remember ice cream floats? Basically either coke or cream soda with a scoop of ice cream in. Revolting really but were very popular for a while.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 15/09/2023 14:39

Coke floats? Yes a treat of a drink growing up in the 1970s.

Mrsjayy · 15/09/2023 14:51

Being Scottish my floats were irnbru I wish I still liked them I remember then fondly

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/09/2023 08:38

@JuvenileBaldEagle I remember in the early nineties my parents excitedly made us ice cream floats one Sunday afternoon. A big treat as we were rarely allowed fizzy drinks.

We tasted them to be polite and it was never spoken of again. Why would you put lovely lovely ice cream in a fizzy drink, ruining both.

you can still get corned beef in a tin

I am aware of this. However they never appear in public anymore. No corned beef sarnies or hash. Pek ham has been eschewed for the waffer thin ham. PEK ham in aspic slid straight out the tin seemed to be on every buffet table. Same with the vol-au-vent, primula squeezed into celery, pease pudding and 'flan'.
All gone.
Thank fuck TBH. Grin

I love ice cream floats. Ginger beer was my favourite as a child, followed by cream soda.

Harponatit · 18/09/2023 05:07

Just got in and starving (of course i don't really know the meaning of that) ,
Probably mentioned but coronation chicken.

Illegallyblonder · 19/09/2023 17:00

@Fruitloopcowabunga thanks for the book recommendation, I've downloaded it and am loving it! Thanks

I live in East London hardly ever see pork on the menu

sashh · 20/09/2023 01:45

I had breakfast delivered yesterday, and I ordered a 'crusty cob' for later, it was corned beef so it is still on some menus.

Chicken in a basket

Our local pub does it.

Mine is lemon meringue pie. A rare treat.

Glittertwins · 16/02/2024 16:46

@Roughasabadgersbum & @Ourshoddyhouse - Steeles is still going? I loved that place when I was young and used to go for birthdays. Don't live anywhere near now though.

Roughasabadgersbum · 16/02/2024 17:07

Yes still going!! It's our go to when in Cleethorpes!

viques · 16/02/2024 17:15

When we were young our favourite restaurant had a cabinet of rotisserie chickens cooking, I know you get them in supermarkets these days, but we thought it was very exotic (and delicious).

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/02/2024 19:10

Coquille St Jacques. Can’t think why it went out of favour.

A proper one is something of a faff to make from scratch, which is why I only make one once a year, for dh’s birthday.

ALongHardWinter · 16/02/2024 19:17

Prawn cocktail.

If you want lemon meringue go to Gloria’s in Shorditch, it’s about a foot high , and I mean that literally. It defeated me!https://secretldn.com/gloria-lemon-meringue-pie/

I have a recipe for coq au vin which is lovely. Happy to share if anyone wants it.

littleroad · 16/02/2024 22:27

Corn on the cob. Stainless steel dish with wee forks on the side.
