Which foods do you rarely see on menus now? I was watching some old adverts on YouTube for Little Chef and such which made me think of this.

Do you still get melon as a starter? I used to love that as a child. Also a glass of orange juice as a starter. I went to a hotel in around 2010 and they still had that as an option on the menu. I found it rather charming.

The sauce on the shrimp cocktails I had when I lived in the US in about 1990 were some sort of tomato (perhaps ketchup) with horseradish in it. I wasn't a fan.

love shrimp cocktail only thing i can make myself

There's an Ice cream Parlour in Conwy. You buy the novelty cups, they fill it with any ice-cream you want and you choose any sprinkles you want. The grandchildren love it there

I had an amazing one in a pub in Knaresborough recently. I love a ploughman's.

Vegetarian meals are getting harder to find in restaurants now. Mostly vegan substitutes and it's simply just not the same.

Yes absolutely agree with this. I appreciate the extra choices that are now available, but it's annoying when the only options on a menu are meat or vegan options

What you call shrimps are pretty much the same as our prawns, however, I think you have ketchup on your shrimp cocktail? Whereas ours is a kind of pink sauce made from ketchup & mayo. I got quite a shock when I ordered a shrimp cocktail.

My parents loved a meal out at Biggles. I've not been since about 1988 but I see the menu hasn't changed much 😂. It's in a nice setting, if I remember correctly.

I think it would be more that we would call the shrimps used in shrimp cocktail king prawns - the prawns we use in prawn cocktail are usually smaller. And conversely our shrimps are tiny!

Taramasalata is on sale in the supermarkets I use - Sainsbury, Waitrose, Marks etc.

Thanks - I'll look out for it.

Whenwillglorioussummercome · 11/09/2023 22:23

And taramasalata is still a staple on the menu in Greek restaurants too!

In the 80s, the company launched a new toilet roll. They hired a suite at the Dorchester. Park Lane, and I had the terrible job of operating the AV equipment, ie pressing the buttons on the slide projector, playing the video of the advert, talking to the buyers from major supermarkets and made sure they always had a drink. The chef was Anton Mosimann, one of the drivers of Nouvelle Cuisine. His dinners were beautifully presented, but tiny. His lunch grill room was fabulous. Lambs liver and onions with mash and gravy. It was absolutely delicious. And someone else was oayingwhich made it even better.

More of a greasy spoon menu, but liver and bacon. I used to love that! (Waiting for the hate😁)

I still make liver and bacon. I love it.

Heinz tomato soup as a starter or orange juice/ pate and toast / melon / creamy mushrooms,
this was often the choice of starters we had.
we definitely ate a lot less calories in the 70’s and 80’s

Icepinkeskimo · 11/09/2023 23:53

Pizzaland
two slices of pizza, a baked potato and coleslaw. It was the best.

Brown Derby a big ring donut (well everything seemed bigger in those days!😉) vanilla ice cream chocolate syrup and crushed nuts.

The family business was producing gateaux’s and other desserts in the 70s and 80’s for restaurants, pubs, different venues remember the dinner and dance cabaret clubs? There were thousands of gateaux’s sent out every week.
The best sellers were of course the black forest, followed by the strawberry and then coffee and mandarin, and pineapple and chocolate. I think there were about 30 different types but the black forest always reigned supreme.
24 portions all beautifully presented and no automated machinery all decorated by hand. Then packaged up and went into the “blast freezer”.
Good days, but trends move on, which is a shame. Unfortunately cheesecake killed the gateaux, rip Black Forest.

Pavlovas are on a lot of menus in Ireland, very popular over here.

Who remembers this bible?

I have that book, one of my most used cookery books until I joined Slimming World 😂

It’s surprisingly hard, in London at least, to find T-bone steak. Everywhere that used to have T-bone now has ribeye instead. Haven’t seen T-bone for 4 years or so.
Also steak and kidney pudding. Rare to find it (though I notice it’s in Wetherspoons latest menu—sorry, I guess I have lost caste by admitting I have been in a Wetherspoons) or in fact any suet puddings at all.
