Which foods do you rarely see on menus now? I was watching some old adverts on YouTube for Little Chef and such which made me think of this.

Do you still get melon as a starter? I used to love that as a child. Also a glass of orange juice as a starter. I went to a hotel in around 2010 and they still had that as an option on the menu. I found it rather charming.

I had this recipe book as an engagement book this was my Bible. It eventually fell apart but I managed to find a good second hand copy a few years ago. I still use it on occasion. It's my Christmas cake go to ingredients wise

I bought myself a Good Housekeeping cookery book, I think at the start of 2nd year of uni when I went from catered halls to a flat, so that would be 1980.

Minted Lamb Henry was everywhere in the 80's and 90's, can't recall the last time i saw it anywhere. The one local place that still serves Lamb Henry glazes it with red currant sauce not mint jelly :( Other places offer rack, chops or shank with some combo of rosemary, thyme, garlic and oil but it just doesn't hit the same. In general alot of the nicer pubs (non chain) seem to be replacing traditional grub with American dishes - assortment of burgers, ribs & wings, pulled pork, loaded fries, mac n cheese and so on.

Oh I have my late mums copy and I also still use it, as well as her Farmhouse Kitchen books 1, 2 and 3. Another I still use although not as much in the last while is The Tricity Cookbook which came with the Tricity President Cooker that I only replaced as the council rewired my flat and afterwards it kept tripping the electric's. That cooker was my grans, then my mums, then my sister's before it came to me, ah the days when white goods were built to last.

My mum had the Tricity cook book, she used to write down recipes from the radio and store those in the pages

Is it a Brewers Fayre pub by any chance? Wondering as The Coach House that recently shut down at the Trafford Centre was a brewers fayre and they did both Knickerbocker Glory and Jam Roly Poly.

It's a family owned fish & chip restaurant 😊

Our local farm shop (which is mainly a butcher's) does minted lamb Henry.

Cookerhood · 12/09/2023 20:07

I've never heard of Minted Lamb Henry. Is it a regional thing?

ChessieFL · 12/09/2023 20:48

I’ve never heard of Minted Lamb Henry either!

808KateO · 12/09/2023 21:42

Well that's something you learn every day - Lamb Henry is new to me too!

Riverlee · 12/09/2023 21:48

My Dh was given this by his mother. I use it all the time. When my in-laws sadly passed away, I grabbed their copy, as mine is beginning to fall to bits,

Faggots, which you could never get where I lived, but I also saw listed in the chippy near my grandmothers in Wales.

Mr Brains are available in most supermarkets if you're wanting to eat some

justasking111 · 12/09/2023 22:10

As a poor newlywed I'd buy faggots regularly from the butcher. Mr Brains are awful these days, just mush.

Yes I used to watch his tv shows and wanted to be a chef.

SperaT · 13/09/2023 00:19

An ice cream shop I know still does knickerbocker glories and banana splits.

VoluptuaSneezelips · 13/09/2023 04:50

I never realised that Lamb Henry was a regional thing. So it's similar to a shank but instead of coming from the back leg it is from the shoulder. Tends to look more like a mini joint than a shank unless you buy it bone in, it has less fat and more meat though. There are two popular versions, one where it's marinated over night in mint sauce/jelly and the other with red currant sauce/jelly. Then it's slow cooked for a few hours in stock and afterwards the stock is reduced with a bit of the marinade to make a thick gravy. Proper melt in the mouth when done properly. Best served with a generous helping of mash and either pea's or green beans.

TranquilWater · 13/09/2023 06:13

@Peckahminn11 Lots of supermarkets sell crème brûlée. DH is French and he often buys it from Morrisons, I think. He has a little kitchen blowtorch for caramelising the sugar. Bonne Maman do crème brûlée too, as well a rum baba, which is another retro favourite.
