Which foods do you rarely see on menus now? I was watching some old adverts on YouTube for Little Chef and such which made me think of this.

Do you still get melon as a starter? I used to love that as a child. Also a glass of orange juice as a starter. I went to a hotel in around 2010 and they still had that as an option on the menu. I found it rather charming.

The sauce on the shrimp cocktails I had when I lived in the US in about 1990 were some sort of tomato (perhaps ketchup) with horseradish in it. I wasn't a fan.

It's made with chili sauce, horseradish, lemon juice and a dash of garlic powder - at least that's how it was back in the day.

You can buy really nice tinned grapefruit segments from Waitrose in two colours to recreate at home. Available in syrup or fruit juice. This is in reply to the person who mentioned liking mandarin and grapefruit segments as a starter.

nomadmummy · 12/09/2023 06:48

But you can buy a pack of 2 at some at Waitrose! Common grocery item in France. Perhaps the French exodus is to blame.

I have inherited my parents collection( in smart blue vinyl files ) of The Cordon Bleu Recipe Collection. Fabulous recipes of many Seventies favourites.
I think you paid a subscription and a smart booklet ,A4 size, was delivered monthly with menu suggestions for dinner parties and detailed descriptions of the techniques you would have to perfect to cook the dishes featured.
I don’t remember my parents having many dinner parties though- they just tried the recipes on our family . For me it was part of my childhood and youth- of feeling secure , privileged and optimistic. It couldn’t last but it was lovely !

I read that Black Forest Gateau is still hugely popular in Pakistan and features in many celebrations. Unfortunately I can't remember why!

because it has booze in it? 😂

Who remembers this bible?

OMG I had this!

Whenwillglorioussummercome · 12/09/2023 11:14

I'm looking at the Hamlyn book on my kitchen shelf right now. We also had recipe cards in a vinyl booklet that I loved reading through as a child, and I still have my mother's very battered BeRo cookbook that I made something from a couple of weeks ago.

pollymere · 12/09/2023 11:15

Black Forest Gateau. The proper one covered in cream and not mousse or ganache.

And oddly, more recently, the chance to have a jacket potato instead of fries. It's started to disappear as an option.

Pliudev · 12/09/2023 11:26

YupIKnow: maybe but the version on Masala TV (also in Urdu) doesn't have alcohol in it. I wonder if that means it isn't really a BFG?
I think it's facing a bit of a backlash these days.

"Brown Derby a big ring donut (well everything seemed bigger in those days!😉) vanilla ice cream chocolate syrup and crushed nuts."

My favourite dessert at Wimpy! 😋 Although 🤭 at "crushed nuts."

Bombay Duck is a particular Indian Ocean species that is traditionally dried. It got banned in the EU as it was usually dried outdoors, so not under strict hygiene rules.

I miss the Dutch Pancake House in Manchester - all manner of savoury and sweet options wrapped in a pancake.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 12/09/2023 12:58

I remember duck l’Orange but have no idea what it is!

justasking111 · 12/09/2023 13:02

I had this recipe book as an engagement book this was my Bible. It eventually fell apart but I managed to find a good second hand copy a few years ago. I still use it on occasion. It's my Christmas cake go to ingredients wise

We also have this!

My dad made duck a l'orange by smearing marmalade across a duck and roasting it.

It's roast duck with a sweet orange sauce with fresh orange and orange peel in and often containing brandy / grand marnier. Love it, my mum still makes it it's gorgeous done properly.

I loved Knickerbocker glories and prawn cocktails. I still buy prawn cocktails.

I'm adding banana splits to the list. I still love those.

We were just at a Premier in and the adjacent eatery was brewers fare. DH had a prawn cocktail (declared perfectly accepatable) and I was thinking of having a knickerbocker glory for pud but sadly was too full (so I couldn't tell you if it was up to old fashioned standards!!)

Fruitloopcowabunga · 12/09/2023 14:29

Chocolate blancmange in the shape of a rabbit, in a field of chopped lime jelly. Well that was supposed to be the centrepiece of my 5th birthday party, but I insisted on a strawberry blancmange rabbit in a 'field' of orange jelly. Thank you for this thread, can't believe I didn't recreate this when the DC were small.

Michael Jones’ mother did one for his fourth birthday. White blancmange, green jelly. I was very impressed, I thought she had somehow sculpted the bunny out of a block of blancmange………

Hmm, yes, but to be honest I think Michael Jones’ mummy could have one handedly sculpted a bunny out of chocolate that Michelangelo would have admired, but , I ask myself, could Michelangelo have sculpted a David out of vanilla blancmange? I think not.

The mental image conjured up by 'smearing marmalade across a duck' has made me chortle. 😄
