Which foods do you rarely see on menus now? I was watching some old adverts on YouTube for Little Chef and such which made me think of this.

Do you still get melon as a starter? I used to love that as a child. Also a glass of orange juice as a starter. I went to a hotel in around 2010 and they still had that as an option on the menu. I found it rather charming.

@Riverlee does that book have lychee chicken in it? I've been trying to find the copy I had for years and none have been the right one!

Harponatit · 13/09/2023 11:30

Yes!
Didn't he use to skip down the studio stairs after cooking his dish and have a glass of wine with the best looking girlie from the audience?

Or was that Graham Kerr, The Galloping Gourmet?

He was never as much fun after he went macrobiotic and healthy! Wine Wine

With the skipping and the wine in hand that sounds like Keith Floyd? I could be wrong - it's all a bit fuzzy for me these days😁!

If you're in north London Table Du Marche is a traditional French restaurant and does a lot of the items mentioned on this thread: duck a l'orange, coq au vin, onion soup, veal, foie gras, creme brulee. Delicious. It attracts a lot of French expats.

That said, I've never had trouble finding creme brulee. It's usually a standard option.

FoghornUnicorn · 13/09/2023 13:19

It used to be that if somewhere offered ice cream it was a choice of vanilla, chocolate or strawberry. I’ve noticed you hardly ever see strawberry ice cream as option, slowly being replaced by the likes of salted caramel or Biscoff etc.

Arctic roll😀

Beat me too it. The treats of the early 80's!

Oooh, I had Lamb Henry in a pub in W Yorkshire a couple of months ago, it was gorgeous.

I had never heard that name for a dish before and put it down to the pub being quirky, or maybe the name of the chef!

I never realised that Lamb Henry was a regional thing. So it's similar to a shank but instead of coming from the back leg it is from the shoulder. Tends to look more like a mini joint than a shank unless you buy it bone in, it has less fat and more meat though. There are two popular versions, one where it's marinated over night in mint sauce/jelly and the other with red currant sauce/jelly. Then it's slow cooked for a few hours in stock and afterwards the stock is reduced with a bit of the marinade to make a thick gravy. Proper melt in the mouth when done properly. Best served with a generous helping of mash and either pea's or green beans.

That sounds delicious

Wetherspoons still does a lot of the things mentioned on here. Scampi, mixed grill, steak and kidney pudding.

I'd never heard of it either. I can't recall ever seeing it on a menu.

It was always on Indian menus for the one person who refused to even try curry.

Ah thank you. We didn't go to Indian restaurants very often as my mum didn't like spicy food. Maybe she didn't realise she could have had this delicacy as an alternative! 😊

IHateWasps · 14/09/2023 10:09

Some Chinese takeaways around here still have chicken Maryland on the menu.

In my house it was my dad who cannot stand the smell so I didn't go to an Indian restaurant until I was taken by a boyfriend.

I wonder if it was something they bought in frozen if it was also sold in Chinese places.

Yes - maybe the breaded chicken was frozen and then they added fresh bananas and whatever else went in.

Half an avocado in a fan. Last saw it in a 'Station Hotel' in the mid mid midlands about 15 years ago and the avocado was so unripe it pinged off across the room when I tried to pierce with a fork

Desserts with sparklers in

Tinned 'PEK' ham and corned beef

whynotwhatknot · 14/09/2023 13:33

you can still get corned beef in a tin

So, just about as central as it's possible to be? 😉

All corned beef is in a tin, it's just that some places it is taken out of the tin and put in packets. are charge more for it.

YupIKnow · 15/09/2023 07:42

I love tinned corned beef and also tinned chicken breast in jelly - think its because they are so salty!

FKATondelayo · 15/09/2023 11:24

I often make an amazing Caribbean (spicy) Corned Beef & Cabbage recipe from this book - it doesn't sound that appealing on paper but it really is delicious.

justasking111 · 15/09/2023 12:20

Corned beef hash first meal in the hospital after my first baby was born. Absolutely amazing, but I'd had nothing but water for 24 hours
