Which foods do you rarely see on menus now? I was watching some old adverts on YouTube for Little Chef and such which made me think of this.

Do you still get melon as a starter? I used to love that as a child. Also a glass of orange juice as a starter. I went to a hotel in around 2010 and they still had that as an option on the menu. I found it rather charming.

Vegetarian meals are getting harder to find in restaurants now. Mostly vegan substitutes and it's simply just not the same.

Oh and those DELICIOUS teddy bear ice cream wafers which had two teddies - a boy and a girl - and snapped in half. Very popular on children's puddings in the 90s.

Always remember that Fawlty Towers bit, think it was the "Gourmet Night" episode. The starter menu had Grapefruit Cherry (half a grapefruit with a cherry on top) and Grapefruit Orange (ditto, with bit of orange instead of cherry) and Grapefruit Surprise. A guest asks Basil what's Grapefruit Surprise? and he replies that's the half grapefruit with, er...... nothing on top.

My mouth is watering!
Black Forest gateau
cheesecake
banana split
chargrilled burgers
chicken Maryland
prawn cocktail
knickerbocker glory
loved them all

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 10/09/2023 18:17

Vegetarian meals that don't include vegan substitutes. My MIL wanted the veggie burger but regular cheese (because vegan cheese has the texture of rubber and tastes like 2 day old vomit) and the restaurant wouldn't do it!!!

Now, vegetarians have no choice but to eat vegan when they go out. Its ridiculous.

Profiteroles, I feel like I hardly ever see them on menus now and they’re my favourite. Now just have to buy them from Tesco, definitely not the same.

You need to come to the algarve. You can get all of the above there all year round. I had a banana split just last night and it had a sparkler as well 🤗

Black Forest gateaux? I'm on skyscanner already ✈️

Vegetarian meals 😭 it's all vegan now. And I do not mind vegan meals, but I do mind vegan cheese which restaurants will never swap out!

piscofrisco · 10/09/2023 18:22

Glass of orange juice as a starter.

Furryrug · 10/09/2023 18:24

SaltySeaCat · 10/09/2023 18:26

We came back from Italy lash week and I had a prawn cocktail starter in the hotel and orange juice was also on the menu as a starter!

Prawn cocktail

The Ivy brasserie chain do these

A lemon filled with lemon sorbet

Oh wow, I had forgotten about those! I think Pizza Hut used to do them? And oranges too? They used to be really frozen solid!

Throwaway11 · 10/09/2023 18:29

Liver. Thank god.

Lzzyisgod · 10/09/2023 18:30

Veggie risotto - used to be the standard veggie dish on a menu!

But agree with previous posters that most options are vegan these days and sometimes I just want something nice with cheese or cream!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 10/09/2023 18:30

Coquille St Jacques. Can’t think why you never see it - it’s delish.

GolgafrinchamB · 10/09/2023 18:30

Frech Onion Soup topped with a big piece of bread with melted cheese on it. They even used to come in specific bowls with a handle on one side, unlike other soups.

Boujibroke · 10/09/2023 18:31

Vary rarely do you see a cheese board on a menu now. Shame as I love a cheese board.

You can buy them at M&S! I get them every now and again as a treat.

FoghornUnicorn · 10/09/2023 18:33

Potato croquettes. Used to love them as a child.

Pushkinini · 10/09/2023 18:35

Death by Chocolate. Was always on the menu in the late 80s/early 90s when I used to waitress in the local pub.

Where on earth are you eating? We've been eating out a bit more than usual recently and usually share a cheese board for afters. I don't think I've ever seen a desert menu without one (well... apart from asian restaurants of course)

FastBlueHedgehog · 10/09/2023 18:36

Death by Chocolate - I worked as a waitress in the late 80s when i was at school. I can still remember the day it appeared on the menu. All us teens were mystified as to what it could be (oversweet synthetc chocolate cake says my 50 year old self)

Beargrumps22 · 10/09/2023 18:37

oh I always remember Little Chef when I was a young impressionableble 16 year old a guy I fancied took me there and bought me cherry pancakes with squirty cream! I thought it was marvellous so sophisticated especially when he put his hoodie round me as i was cold oh to be like that again and impressed by such little things! The pancakes were delicous too

Loads of places still do cheeseboards. I'm in South Yorkshire and just about all the pubs that do excellent food offer a cheeseboard.
