I could actually cry with flight issue

Our flight was cancelled yesterday morning, the only way we could get to our destinations was to book a flight with a 1 hour stopover in Munich then onto Alicante. Well I've just checked the flight to Munich and it is now delayed by almost 3 hours 😩😩
wtf happens regarding our other flight ??

I'm so stressed out, just trying to get us and very upset kids on our holiday, they were heartbroken yesterday

I had a flight cancelled with LH in March because of a strike and had a new flight offered by LH less than an hour after my cancelled flight should have taken off. I was flying on my own and it's easier to reschedule one person rather than three but I'd trust LH to take care of it, especially since they are dealing only with some delayed flights coming/going to the UK not with a complete meltdown.

Airlines are obligated to put you on the next available flight from their airline. That’s key. They aren’t required to put you on a BA flight.

Airlines will use alliance partners or may (please note I say may even go outside their alliances if it will work out better/cheaper for them. I've had the latter happen more than once.

JassyRadlett · 30/08/2023 09:11

Actually I seem to be incorrect, under CAA and EU rules:

Although most airlines will book you onto another of their flights to the same destination, if an alternative airline is flying there significantly sooner or other suitable modes of transport are available then you may have the right to be booked onto that alternative transport instead. You can discuss this with your airline.

That would seem to be "key".

Good luck with the flights.
Pregnancy and having a toddler does not mean the world has to stop spinning, even if there are some flight delays.
Some people are behaving as though you're headed into some sort of cross between Jurrasic World and a war zone, rather than a first-world airport.
Enjoy your holiday.

Are autistic children not allowed holidays? You’re reacting as though OP is taking them into a war zone. Get a grip.

Again, what toddler do you know how are like this? Mine and the others I know absolutely do remember what they ate for lunch and are very much aware of the events they are going to. They will mention things like holidays and other things like birthday parties or days out they are going to without others mentioning them. They are clever though, maybe some others aren’t so aware of what’s going on at this age.

It's got nothing to do with how "clever" your toddler is and is everything to do with how the parent handles it. 99% of toddlers can be distracted with a packet of haribo and a day trip to a local farm/activity centre/trampoline Park and "never mind, we'll go to Spain another day". If your toddler is so "clever" that they are unmanagably distraught at plans being changed and that the adults are unable to console or distract sufficiently then I think you need to give mensa a call.

Oakbeam · 30/08/2023 09:38

what I don't understand is how airlines suddenly magic up spare seats on the next available flight given that they tend to overbook. How does this happen in practice

In my experience, it’s rare for a scheduled flight to be completely full, except at peak times. Close to Christmas or New Year, for example. On occasions, I have had a row of four seats to myself.

I was one of the lucky ones who got to where they wanted to go Monday afternoon without too much delay. The row I was in wasn’t full. The row in front was completely empty.

Mikimoto · 30/08/2023 09:49

If OP misses her connection, she won't be getting to Alicante today. They could fly her somewhere else on StarAlliance (Brussels/Lisbon) to then fly tomorrow.

I did not at any point say autistic children shouldn’t go on holiday. That’s a massive reach.

All sorts of issues can happen on holiday though, from delays to hotel-wide food poisonings to terror attacks. You reacted with horror that OP has taken her autistic child with her on this holiday, the ill-disguised implication being she is a neglectful parent for doing so.

HopeMumsnet · 30/08/2023 10:26

Hi everyone,
This has been an ill-tempered thread thanks to some persistent trollhunters, with whom will will be having words.

We cannot overstate how frustrating we find trollhunting to be.

It derails threads such as this, where we at MNHQ are pretty content to let things run because we can see that this poster has been with us for years and built up a decent posting history, but also delights trolls when it happens on their threads.

For actual trolls, what has taken place on this thread is precisely the conflict upon which they thrive.

So we will ask again - if MNers have concerns about a thread, report them.
If we say we're having a look and nothing happens on the thread, it's safe to assume that we have had a look and did not share the concerns.

It is not then up to individuals to bypass that process and post their concerns to the thread - to do so is trollhunting, and it is against the guidelines that we have held dear since 'Netiquette' was considered a cool internet term.

Apologies for the massive derail, OP, we hope you get to Alicante, and a nice cool drink on the beach, as soon as humanly possible.

Op I have been on your thread since Monday. Sorry you got the all to frequent shitty end of the stick from the MN community.

This isn't a safe space for support most days. It's full of bitter people wanting you to feel shitty as 1) being upset is only valid for deaths on here 2) you don't think, react and act exactly as the shitty posters so you are WRONG!

I hope you get there, maybe come back to the original thread with others in this situation who get it

That is not the implication and has nothing to do with my reaction. That assumption says a lot more about you than me.

IrresponsiblyCertainAboutSexualDimorphism · 30/08/2023 11:04

I have been
a) on a plane that was held awaiting a connection plane.
b)totally re-routed when the first leg was cancelled/delayed
c)re-routed using a non-partner airline

so anything could happen. Hopefully OP is safely airborne on the way to her holiday.

Edited for grammar.

The answer is in your last sentence. I fully agree.

People would attack the OP if she was grounded by the storms in Palma citing irresponsibility and hysteria. They would possibly also attack her if she fell down the stairs as some twat would make up a non existing back story saying she was pissed then come back to the threads for hours denying it.

Drama? Love of upsetting others? It's very very common. Dare I say standard MN. Catty and nasty

Well, we made it to Munich. Because the flight was delayed we missed the connecting flight to Alicante, we landed and five mins later it took off.
Have to give it to Lufthansa though, we knew we had been re-routed before we even landed as the cabin crew told us, they have our us up in a very nice hotel by the airport including breakfast and dinner. They've also given us a buggy to use because ours went missing , the pilot even went off to try and find it !

So this morning we journey to Frankfurt, and then finally to Alicante ! 🤞🤞

For those concerned, the kids are quite happy ! And the airports were not chaos, either side !

Reallybadidea · 31/08/2023 05:36

That's great! Hope the rest of your journey is uneventful and you enjoy your holiday. Lufthansa sound great - I think the likes of Ryanair have made us forget what good customer service looks like

QuillBill · 31/08/2023 07:02

Good news. Have a wonderful holiday after your adventure.

DyslexicPoster · 31/08/2023 07:06

JassyRadlett · 31/08/2023 09:13

Ah that's lovely news! Glad Lufthansa were as efficient for you as we've always experienced, they definitely seem to have an ethos of proactive customer service.
