Do read properly. I said “for many”, not everyone. 🙄

No sugar but you use those Betty Crocker packets? Nasty tasting things.

So what was even the point of your comment? 🙄

Qilin merely explained by mix packs are useful for some people, and you had to make a pointless comment about staples which she already knows.

And I think you must be an exceptionally bad baker if you can’t make a Betty Crocker mix taste good.

Fluffyowl00 · 26/08/2023 21:40

I found one in big Tesco. I hope they got the gin.

What sort of idle git buys ‘crumble mix’?

One with limited access/budget to buying full packs of flour, sugar, butter and oats when they don't cook enough to justify it. Packet mix is cheaper if just a one off every so often.

Someone with a medical condition which makes using your fingers painful.

Someone new to cooking for themselves or new to making a dessert at home.

Someone who is lacking in confidence but wants to have a go as a one off to start with.

Someone who isn't as judgemental as yourself perhaps?!

Screamingabdabz · 26/08/2023 21:44

People are in a tizzy about crumble mix but no one bats an eyelid at the suggestion that we should all be out foraging our own blackberries? All the brambles near me are either festooned with the lovely baubles that ever considerate dog owners leave or fully juiced up on exhaust fumes…

Nanaof1 · 26/08/2023 21:45

Merapi · 26/08/2023 19:58

Only in Waitrose. Blackberries 😂
Every hedge in the country is absolutely heaving with them for free.

I would be in seventh heaven! Blackberries and raspberries are my favorite fruits/berries. I am so jealous! 😊😉

Qilin · 26/08/2023 21:47

You do realise that butter, flour, oats and sugar can be used for many other things? For many of us they are store cupboard staples.

Of course

But just because they see for me and some others, they really aren't for many many people.

I use butter daily and some sugar and flour to justify buying them in. I don't use oats normally so would need to buy in specially. As it happens I don't really make crumbles so don't need to.

However some people simply don't have these things in regularly or as staples.

And for some the simple act of rubbing a crumble together is painful. A crumble mix needs far less rubbing in - have seen it used with children with send and they found it easier than the desperate ingredients. I'd assume the same would be the same for someone with painful arthritis in their fingers.

Obviously you get scratched to buggery which is why blackberries cost £££ to buy but rhubarb makes a good crumble too

And plums, with the added fun of a built in game at the end, tinker tailor , soldier sailor….

Thedoor · 26/08/2023 21:48

I bought both blackberries and crumble mix recently! The blackberries near me are very much shriveled up and it was about or under a quid for crumble mix vs having to buy all the other stuff which I wouldn't use.

What strikes me is that this person is so lazy and/or an utterly crap cook. Ready made cheese sauce is bad enough but I didn't even know ready prepared crumble mix existed, it's only sugar, flour butter and maybe oats, takes seconds to make!
Feet - maybe foot cream/ foot scrub/ deodorant? Or maybe nothing to do with Waitrose, maybe a reminder to book a chiropodist?

Jeez, get a life.

Qilin · 26/08/2023 21:50

Do read properly. I said “for many”, not everyone.

So why post a reply to my comment then? As I clearly said some people, not all - so yes for some people they are staples, for ti there they aren't.

Not sure what else your point was?!

What a judgement from a tiny shopping list.

Maybe, but it's true!

I’ve bought crumble mix before. Oh and ready made cheese sauce. So shoot me 🤷‍♀️

Dogs gravy! Is that to pour over the dogs bollix? I imagine the dog turning up its nose and giving its anxious parents the cold shoulder if its steak dinner isn’t finished off with a good glug of bisto.

I mean who hasn't gone bramble hunting ? 🤣

Years ago a farmer we knew said I could go up onto his land where there were bushes loaded with blackberries easy to reach. I phoned a friend to ask her if she'd like to come, Oh no, I don't want to get my hands scratched. Twenty minutes after I drove by her house on my way home she was on the phone 'I'm coming over to collect my blackberries'!

Chocolatepeanutbuttercupsandicecream · 26/08/2023 21:57

Given that feet is separate to the rest of the list, maybe it means something like take dc to get feet measured (like in Clarks for school shoes or something)?

Einszwei · 26/08/2023 21:58

Lots of people can't rub in the flour and butter if they have arthritis, so unless they have a food blender I can see why crumble mix is a good option.

I don't have arthritis and I have the time and ability to make it from scratch. I just can't be arsed and would rather not Grin People love to ascribe moral judgements to people just deciding to do things that make their lives easier, it's very weird. I also used pre-diced onion and garlic. And have a robot hoover. And loads of other small convenience stuff to make my life easier!

I am sure that the people criticizing the person's list because it has pre-made cheese sauce and crumble mix churn their own butter, age their own cheese and roll their own pasta. I mean, they must...right?

willWillSmithsmith · 26/08/2023 22:05

People who get judgemental about people using mixes are annoying and smug.

As well as ready made crumble mix and cheese sauce I also buy gravy granules and instant coffee. No doubt I’d be considered lazy on here but I’ve also brought up two children by myself (no shared care), worked and then cared full time for a parent with dementia but if buying a few convenience items makes a person lesser then that’s your prerogative. As someone once said Life’s too short to stuff a mushroom.

Clowninja · 26/08/2023 22:05

I split my lists like this too.
Food shop items from the top down, pharmacy/misc other items from the bottom of the list up.

Dont understand why on earth you posted it on here though. I see lists left behind in the basket rack every other time I shop, dont really care what other shoppers buy to read them.

Winterjoy · 26/08/2023 22:09

Qilin · 26/08/2023 20:43

Which is fine if you make it regularly. Otherwise it's buying a bag of flour, a block of butter, a bag of oats, and a bag of sugar. So a mix will be cheaper if only doing a one off.

Also requires a little more confidence - could be someone new to making their own food. Or someone who doesn't feel confident 'baking' something right now for various reasons.

Also making a crumble then requires you to use your fingers to mix and crumble it generally. Arthritis in the fingers would make that really painful - even if only a few minutes for your average person.I'm quite sure there are other medical and/or health conditions which would make it trickier.

So a pretty judgemental comment based on one very short list.

Exactly, I live alone and butter, sugar and oats aren't part of my staple diet. I've bought butter and sugar before to make a small crumble and ended up throwing most of it away (and feeling guilty about doing so) as so much was left over. I never thought of buying a packet but will going forward!

Is the one item "dogs gravy"?

I like the last list I wrote for DH to pick up.

He called me and asked if he should pick up some Chex Mix-Bold as I hadn't made it clear.
Yeah, 45 years and he's still a smart-azz. 😄😍💖
