My favourite shopping list find (and in Waitrose!) was one that said the usual bread, milk, potatoes etc etc…then ‘fannies’.

Me & DH tried for days to decide what it could be. Fancies? Flans? Frangipani? Never worked it out,

Or maybe it was a MN-er on the wind up…

Only in Waitrose. Blackberries 😂
Every hedge in the country is absolutely heaving with them for free.

This, we’ve had pounds of them.

Merapi · 27/08/2023 11:14

Well doh.

Every urban environment has waste ground with brambles on it. Every city has parks and playing fields surrounded by hedges. It is simply a case of looking. Seek and ye shall find. But people can't be bothered with putting in the time and effort, so they throw money at Waitrose instead.

Hahaha!! Yes and we're all ramblers going to inner city skate parks to put crumble on the table.
Yes, blackberries get picked when we have time. Otherwise, we buy it at the shops. What's the big deal?

RaisinCain · 27/08/2023 18:57

Are people seriously incredulous that I don’t want to spend my weekend foraging for blackberries in a London wasteland when I can pick them up for a couple of quid in Sainsburys? 🤣

guiltyfeethavegotnorythym · 27/08/2023 19:24

I seriously , after this thread think the blackberry should be be the UK's national symbol , after all any ground left to itself will eventually be taken over with them . I'm sure some great artist could come up with a wonderful design including some leaves of the bush .

What strikes me is that this person is so lazy and/or an utterly crap cook. Ready made cheese sauce is bad enough but I didn't even know ready prepared crumble mix existed, it's only sugar, flour butter and maybe oats, takes seconds to make!
Feet - maybe foot cream/ foot scrub/ deodorant? Or maybe nothing to do with Waitrose, maybe a reminder to book a chiropodist?

The thing with making it yourself , especially if you don't do it often , is that you need all those ingredients in the house and the cost of buying them individually outweighs the cost of buying it ready made for under £1. Plus no waste either.

pollymere · 27/08/2023 20:25

I can't get on with the idea or buying crumble mix or blackberries.

Crumble mix is just sugar and flour mixed together in a packet but costs a bomb.

And I picked so many free blackberries yesterday it was untrue. There were so many just falling off because they were so ripe from people not picking them.

My Mum would've written Feet? if she needed to check her podiatry appointment...

michalwave · 26/08/2023 21:39

So what was even the point of your comment? 🙄

Qilin merely explained by mix packs are useful for some people, and you had to make a pointless comment about staples which she already knows.

And I think you must be an exceptionally bad baker if you can’t make a Betty Crocker mix taste good.

How silly. You just be a bad baker if you rely on crap box mixes.

MysteryBelle · 27/08/2023 20:49

I am a very good baker. But when I need to make 200 brownies for some bake sale type thing i am not going to spend the ££ I would normally spend to make them. I wil buy box mixes because they are cheaper than the ingredients I would usually use, especially with my discount, and they are a hell of a lot easier to make in bulk. I am not buying real butter etc when the brownies are sold for less than it cost me to make them!

In my family we have several disabilities that you wouldnt even guess at if you met the people concerned and they use preprepped veg, box mixes etc because frankly a nice dinner is not something that needs to be "earned" by standing in the kitchen for hours.

guiltyfeethavegotnorythym · 27/08/2023 22:26

Oh yes 🤔 cake mixes are great for doing baking with toddlers . Ahh the memories of putting toddler kids in the corner of the worktop and breaking eggs with them .😊

sunshinemode · 27/08/2023 22:43

I'm laughing at all the people not knowing crumble mix exists. I mean whether you buy it or not it's right there next to the flour you are all using to make your crumble from scratch.

Clefable · 27/08/2023 23:34

Ooh love a cake box mix to do with DC! We have an Aldi biscuit one to do this week.

ShineOnBrightly · 28/08/2023 00:08

I suppose Waitrose blackberries won't have dog wee on them

You must have poor comprehension if you didn’t understand when I said we rarely have flour, sugar and oats in the house.

And whose the worse baker, you who can’t make a cake mix taste good, or me, who can? That would be you.

The bottom of PIL back garden has a door onto a track that runs down through fields for about 3 miles to another village. It is heaving with blackberries. MIL has frozen lots for winter. The children went collecting with her today and came back with lots and DH has promised he'll make blackberry crumble (or 'blackbry grumble' as DS2 says) with them tomorrow for tea. How do you freeze blackberries? I'm sure my granny stood them in salted water incase there were any insects in them, then rinsed them. Is that right?

Soak them for 20 minutes in salted water, then rinse, dry and freeze.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 28/08/2023 01:12

Why would anyone bother to pick up a strangers shopping list? And then think it interesting enough to bring home and show to your partner? Who in turn finds it interesting enough to post online!

CallieQ · 28/08/2023 01:16

Exactly

I used to blackberry pick on the horse. Great for reaching them all, not great for getting them home as she also loved them. Would get back and her white nose would be purple from all the juice Grin

Gingernan · 28/08/2023 01:32

Maybe they are really busy, short of time, exhausted or struggle to cook? There are many reasons why people take shortcuts.Im so old and knackered after cleaning offices at 5am 5 or 6 days a week I'm likely to buy the whole thing ready made! And I used to made my own bread and everything. And trust me the seedy little blackberries in my garden or in the wood aren't as nice in my INSTANT porridge as the ones from my local supermarket ( not Waitrose, I'm not posh)

guiltyfeethavegotnorythym · 28/08/2023 02:43

@ShadyCat I didn't know horses liked b/berries 😂 . I did know one who would try to steal a Mars bar .

Maybe for you but I can’t stand for more than a couple of minutes without pain setting in. This would be a huge help for me

viques · 26/08/2023 20:02

Crumble mix!!!! FFS how lazy do you have to be to buy crumble mix, even from Waitrose.

I have to say apart from the crumble mix that is a disappointing shopping list from Waitrose.

So disabilities are laziness? Some of us have our lives improved ever so slightly by these things.

SquirrelFeeder · 28/08/2023 03:14

fluffiphlox · 26/08/2023 21:02

What sort of idle git buys ‘crumble mix’?

Disabled people like me who can’t stand for more than a few mins. Or elderly people with arthritic hands 🤬

Jevwaypock · 28/08/2023 03:31

How judgemental do you have to be to even care that some one has ready made crumble mix! Do you all churn your own butter? Do you milk your own cows? Do you rear your own cattle and slaughter them yourselves? Is one lazy for buying teabags and not picking ones own tea leaves? The horror!!
