Crumble mix!!!! FFS how lazy do you have to be to buy crumble mix, even from Waitrose.

I have to say apart from the crumble mix that is a disappointing shopping list from Waitrose.

OK. Well when I make crumble it takes ages and puts me off making crumble in the first place. Yes the ingredients are simple but you have to spend ages getting the texture right and mixing the butter in enough with the oats and distributing it through so there's no big lumps...right?
If I'd known there was ready made mix

DD and I thought it interesting to see what the person before us bought in the shop.
We bought pizzas because I could not be bothered to cook and some kippers from the fish counter.
I find it interesting that nearly everyone thinks the list belonged to a woman!
Men go to Waitrose too!

Hope that the crumble was not like that we had at uni- you could patent it as glue!!

Disabled people like me who can’t stand for more than a few mins. Or elderly people with arthritic hands 🤬

So I now gather from previous answers. I am in my sixties. I think you may be assuming I’m younger. I use the Kenwood for rubbing in butter because my hands cramp up when doing it manually. Apparently this mix is next to the flour but I’ve never clocked it, presumably because I haven’t been looking for it. On reflection it could be something I could take to my holiday property where I don’t keep ingredients.

I really hate the way that posters use food as a moral thing.

What people eat, and how they prepare it, has no moral value. Someone who spends hours making from scratch is not morally superior to someone who takes short cuts or buys ready made.

If you want to feel superior to people around you (which is in itself definitely an actual moral failing!) then be a better person than the person you deride. Be the very best sort of person you can be. Do things for other people, always turn the other cheek, do the right thing without seeking praise or recognition. Judge people on how they treat others, if you must judge at all.

But food has no moral value.

Hahaha!! Yes and we're all ramblers going to inner city skate parks to put crumble on the table.
Yes, blackberries get picked when we have time. Otherwise, we buy it at the shops. What's the big deal?

No big deal, just daft to waste money on something you can get for free.

I quite like a thread though which provokes discussion .

If only it was just a discussion though.

Instead, any opinions are deemed to be negative judgments and many take the opportunity to choose to be utterly offended. It's very tiresome.

I agree with this. I put up a post on here which was my personal opinion and which has riled many posters. I said that I thought the person who wrote the list was lazy and a crap cook. Many people have suggested that the person may have dexterity issues or problems with standing or not have ingredients to hand( which I had assumed that almost everyone would have in their kitchen). I thank those posters for bringing those things to my attention which I hadn't thought about previously, and for hopefully in the future making me consider other factors when making snap judgements.

However there have also been quite a few other posters, who, without offering any other comments, have just told me to fuck off, that I'm an awful person, I'm mean etc. Just telling someone to fuck off doesn't form any part of a constructive discussion or debate, it contributes nothing at all and I don't know what those type of posters hope to achieve by it. Saying I'm an awful person on the basis of one comment doesn't achieve anything either, and is as judgemental as they accuse me of being. If the aim of those type of posters is to upset me it doesn't work at all as why would I care about some random person on the internet whose only contribution is to tell someone they're awful or to fuck off, I presume they do it to somehow make themselves feel good.

@GetWhatYouWant , I hear you.
There are reasons I might buy a crumble mix and filling. If for example, someone dear to me said they'd like a crumble, I would need to buy or acquire all the ingredients. I could go to nearby countryside to find blackberries, but this would be time consuming and there's no guarantee I'd find any. If I bought flour and sugar, they'd be in packets too big for someone who doesn't normally use these ingredients.

guiltyfeethavegotnorythym · 28/08/2023 15:04

@GetWhatYouWant you're right telling someone to fuck off adds nothing to any discussion and is simply known as frothing .

pollymere · 28/08/2023 17:29

The secret to pastry or crumble with bad hands is to use a potato masher or fork. I've got one with round slots rather than holes and no one's ever noticed I stopped using my hands to do it.

It takes me about 5 min to make a crumble, but we keep butter at room temperature which helps.

However I don't judge anyone else for buying packet mix if they find it easier. I once made something that Delia Smith said would take 7 min. It took me 45 min on the 3rd try after binning the first 2 attempts!
