Song that you irrationally hate…

Mine is (I’ve Had) the Time of My Life, from ‘Dirty Dancing’.

It’s like nails on a chalk board and I can’t even explain why. It’s not even the worst song but it gives me rage and I always have to turn over the radio when it’s on.

Add to that any song by Anastacia, although these days she is rarely played on the radio.

I’m hoping that it’s not just me and suspect everyone has “that song” that they just cannot stand, for no rhyme nor reason. What is yours?

Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves. Can’t bear it!

EverythingButTheName · 23/08/2023 20:58

Oh dear I’m on a roll now

I dislike anything by Simply Red and Take That to be honest which is just taste rather than irrational. (See also - Coldplay - don’t understand the hype over such a snooze fest)

However, Fairground (glad to see it’s been mentioned a few times already) by Simply Red and Smile by Take That will 100% make me switch off in hate instantly!

also Sophie Ellis Bextor/Spillar? - Groovejet! Just the into makes me shudder. I remember it being huge at the time though so was definitely a case of being overpaid by the repeat loving local radio stations!

Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty and Lovely Day by Bill Withers. They make me murderous.

Baker Street was the first one I thought of when I saw the title! Absolute dog shit!

The Killers - Are we human or are we dancers?

The two aren’t mutually exclusive

Oh I dunno some of the stage school brats I went to school with made me question it…

Odellio · 23/08/2023 21:10

That’s not my name - Tings tings

Everything by Sheryl Crow.
Can't understand how she ever found a record producer.

Coastalcreeksider · 23/08/2023 21:16

Anything by Michael Buble
Anything by ABBA especially Dancing Queen
Anything by Rhianna
Anything by Sam Smith

We built this city
Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now

Everybody Hurts by REM
Imagine - John Lennon

I'll think of more, there's so many I loathe

Loving You - by Minnie Riperton - with all the high pitched squealy awfulness. Goes right through me.

I bought this when it came out, played it to death on the family record player in the lounge on repeat.

My poor parents ... 😀

Echo Beach by Echo & The Bunnymen makes me feel nauseous. I was pregnant & feeling nauseous when it was popular. He’s 43 now!

😕 You wot now?

ThunderStormFan · 23/08/2023 21:40

Absolutely anything by Cliff Fucking Richard. I’m completely outing myself here as anyone that knows me knows how much I irrationally and unreasonably hate him but I cannot stand the guy (which obviously makes me target #1 at Christmas).

I don’t know why or what’s wrong with me but as soon as I see him on TV I want to drive over him 😂

maddiemookins16mum · 23/08/2023 21:44

That Chaka Khan one, it gives me irrits. Oh and Lady in Red - boak 🤢

toadasoda · 23/08/2023 21:49

Anything by Bjork. That stupid quiet and loud trumpety one from the late 90s. Rarely hear it now but when I do it annoys me so much and takes me back to my feelings of annoyance when it came on while out in pubs and clubs in my hey day

PissOffJeffrey · 23/08/2023 21:50

Everything But The Girl - Missing. Hate, hate, hate it.

Sash - Encore Une Fois (apologies if that's incorrectly spelled). Doesn't even qualify as a song in my opinion.

Living Next Door to Alice by Smokey.

I really can’t have any sympathy for someone who just didn’t have the balls to tell Alice that he was always in love with her. Ok, she might not have felt the same way, but at least ask her out and find out if the feeling’s mutual. It’s no good whining about what might have been, on her wedding day for gods sake!

Or maybe Alice DID know how he felt, but like me, couldn’t stand his grating voice and chose to ignore his approaches?

Alice? Who the fuck is Alice?

WhatsTheEffingPoint · 23/08/2023 21:56

Groove is in the heart.

The recent song about if heaven had a phone line......listened to it once and its so depressing (probably not helped by the fact a good friend died recently so feels a bit raw)

EmmaM84 · 23/08/2023 21:57

Birdhouse in your soul, it's on absolute radio a lot and I have to just immediately turn it off.

At parties, the opening refrain of beautiful Sunday and the resulting slosh dance makes me cringe

ItsMyUkelele · 23/08/2023 21:57

Shiny Happy People.

Nothing shiny or happy about me whenever that comes on the radio.

The thing about Sweet Caroline is that it's been adapted to fit better to a sports setting (eg the "come on, come on, come on" bit). Neil Diamond has never been happy about it becoming a "Three Lions" type anthem. I loved it as it was - now, not so much.

According to my sister Sweet Caroline was used at Cricket matches and then crossed over to football and then was bloody everywhere. I swear people only know seven words!

Ruthdpl · 23/08/2023 22:03

Yep, you’re right👍

YukoandHiro · 23/08/2023 22:03

Summer of 69 - arrggggh

Also, Dancing in the Dark.

Or Whiny Crappy People, as it was renamed on Not The Nine O'clock News. 😅

Calmdown14 · 23/08/2023 22:19

@LeonardoAcropolis you beat me to it. It's the line about Kilimanjaro rising above the Serengeti which just doesn't fit but is forced in
Like fingers down a blackboard every time I hear it!
