What’s made you feel middle-aged today?

I’ve just bought a new mop and a new pair of high heels for a wedding. I’m excited about the mop and dreading the heels. Middle age is beckoning. What’s made you feel middle-aged today?

Well Mhari Black can fuck off. I used to like her.

Anyway, DH and I had a lovely day out at a National Trust property yesterday. We got scones with jam and cream from the tea room to eat on the lawn. We both commented how we love being old.
DH especially loves it as random people talk to him now as since he’s gone grey. He’s clearly unthreatening.

We’ve got another day at a NT property planned with friends soon.

I fancy the pants off my electrician and he is coming back next month to finish job. ( he is single and 5 yrs younger than me but very physically fit still ). I am 52 ( divorced and do not look my age , friends and colleagues age my appearance as early 40's and they are honest in that. I have aged well through no action on my part other than good genes). We defo had a connection, I could feel/see it. He asked last time if I was married. He has been in contact since to arrange next/final works. I have not felt this giddy for someone in yrs.

I used to be attractive in my day, never had issues attracting guys I fancied. I naively looked in the mirror this morning thinking how should I do my hair when he is next here, in an effort to look my best then... saw fine lines , some loss of symmetry and my mum looking back at me! 😩. All self confidence gone!

He will probably want a much younger woman and I have massively overestimated my now pulling power. I feel very 52 and middle aged today.

Dp's daughter and her boyfriend have got engaged ❤ he is having a flash forward to grandchildren and thought he wasn't old enough to be a grandpa... he's 57, sorry to break it to him...!

Our council bin collection involves a complicated 3 week rota - one of the three collections is the good collection where you can put out everything.

Earlier today I had a moment of panic that I had booked out holiday to coincide with the full bin collection meaning we would miss it.

Imagine my relief to discover I hadn't ... young me wouldn't have cared and would have rolled her eyes at this even being part of my thought process.

MissHarrietBede · 10/08/2023 18:53

@GenialHarryGr0ut I too have developed huge bin anxiety over the middle age years!

MrFlibblesEyes · 10/08/2023 19:35

I grew some pea plants from seed earlier this year and when they had finished I had a few dried up pods left. I planted the dried peas and they have just sprouted again. I'm a pea grandmother! Infact all my garden crops make me very happy and I'm only 37...

My reflection!

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 10/08/2023 20:18

he was talking about how there's something fascinating about going into a stationery shop and how he was excited about some fancy post-it notes

My local stationery shop is closing down and I spent some time the other day stocking up on post-its and highlighters. I need page tags so that's another trip. Actually I don't need them, I just want them. Also had a look at the 2024 diaries but theirs don't have the note pages at the beginning of each month.

And I bought some net curtains today.

A medical consultant ( not a junior doctor ) at my outpatient appointment last week said to me “ If you were my mother, I’d advise you to do X “.

Missmoppetspoppet · 10/08/2023 20:33

@AndyMcFlurry ouch 🙈😂

57 isn’t old enough - Grandparents should be at least past state retirement age!! (Caveat - I know that’s not true, it just makes me feel better saying it!)

My sweaty legs.

If I wear shorts to bed at night I wake up with sweaty legs... I've never had this to contend with..

Also with regard to when people were born people think I must have got it wrong when I say my grandad was born in 1885. He was.

Only one of my grandparents was born after the turn of the 20th century. The rest were Victorians.

My dad was born just after WW1.

Done a new CV for a job application! 🤣 I've been working how long!

When I last did my CV I omitted the first 10-15 years work history and it still looked long .....

When the GP made a comment yesterday in relation to a medical condition I have and said
” …… well when you are beyond middle age …”
I’m 54 😭

Ooh, you need a referral to a consultant I saw last year. I've got diabetes and he was looking over my blood sugars.
He said they were "fine" but I said I felt they'd been a bit high.
"Hmm..." he said, "perhaps so. After all, you're young..."

I'm 3 years older than you.
And I was even paying privately!

Missingthegore · 11/08/2023 05:50

I have loved naps, new kitchen gadgets and clean sheet night since my mid twenties :)
My back used to ache as well (thanks to my height and clinical nursing and bar work!) but agree with the PP who advised Pilates. Took it up in my early 30s and love it.

I got excited about a new broom the other day - I molt like a German Shepard and this rubber broom is fantastic, that and my new flat mop which is great for mopping the stairs effectively!

I did also print out some photos at the office supply shop (how old fashioned!) and got very excited about new pens and notebooks for work...even though I live in another part of the world and new school year is Jan, there is nothing like a new notebook and pen in Aug / Sept to bring joy.

On the flip side a few years ago I was leadership rounding on my ward and talking to a lady of 67 who asked why 2 sets of doctors were reviewing her everyday. I explained that we have a shared care model of geriatricians and surgeons for anyone with a low impact fracture over the age of 65 (orthopods are not interested in why the fracture occurred, only fixing it). She nearly hit the roof "geriatricians? They are for old people! I take my mother to a geriatrician!" was not impressed when said geris came into the room and told her she had osteoporosis, hence the reason for her fracture. I have seen amazingly fit 75 yrs and crumbly 50 yrs, she was not in the amazingly fit group!

When the dentist was about to do X-rays and didn’t even ask the pregnancy question..l know she had my date of birth there (I’m 53) but she could at least have played the game!

Dogsitterwoes · 11/08/2023 07:04

I was at a festival at the weekend and one day had torrential rain. We were all bundled up in waterproofs and wellies.

Lots of young women in tiny clothes. Yes, I made the 'they must be freezing/should wear proper clothes' tutting comment to a friend. Then wanted to slap myself ... This is what old people say.

I love this! The panic about the holiday clashing with the 'good' bin day. Can absolutely identify with this!

I was diagnosed with arthritis when I was 26 so have had the achy joints for decades.

The first time I felt middle aged I think was when a student asked me about my GCSEs, I don't have any, they were not invented when I was at school.

I have actually used a telex machine.

My consultant referred to me in his letter to my GP as a “delightful lady”! Apparently that’s what you get when you pay - before that I was merely a “patient”.
