What’s made you feel middle-aged today?

I’ve just bought a new mop and a new pair of high heels for a wedding. I’m excited about the mop and dreading the heels. Middle age is beckoning. What’s made you feel middle-aged today?

Coming home to a new ironing board cover which I'm about to put on has made me very happy today. How times have changed.

My thumb joint swelling up that is undeniably a first sign of arthritis.

Bugger, is it? had a painful finger yesterday and really hope that's not it.

A painful finger. Isn't getting older great?

SmoothSeasDoNotMakeGoodSailors · 09/08/2023 15:53

The mirror 🙁

Enoughnowbrandon · 09/08/2023 16:00

The 20-somethings in the office all going for lunch together and not getting an invite.

That is awful.

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 09/08/2023 16:36

My back pain

Mhairi Black MP referring to ‘50 year-old Karens’ to describe women standing up for our rights to single sex spaces. That made me feel middle aged and fucking furious. Ungrateful brat: middle-aged women hold the fucking world together. Who does she think raises children, supports young adults and cares for the elderly and vulnerable? Middle aged women, that’s who.

👏👏👏Well said, Yes we do hold the world together ✌

Achy back and hurty shoulders when reaching to hang the washing on the line on a rare sunny day here. It's so much less painful to just shove it in the tumble dryer.

Aitchtee · 09/08/2023 16:46

Waving my 17 year old off on his first driving lesson!

RadishAndTwiglet · 09/08/2023 16:56

I met a lady roughly my age today and we struck up a conversation. Within two minutes we were empathising with one another over menopause symptoms like there was literally nothing else we might have in common worth talking about. It clearly defines and obsesses both of us.

hattie43 · 09/08/2023 16:58

Achy joints

Iamacatslave · 09/08/2023 17:01

My sweaty chin.

Soubriquet · 09/08/2023 17:02

My body. I ache all over and I moan when I have to stand up as it aches.

LemonDrizzle10 · 09/08/2023 17:04

I creak when I get up and am unreasonably excited by my new cool box which arrived today!

Missmoppetspoppet · 09/08/2023 17:04

So many that resonate! Especially the tidying and housework, that counts as a treat these days 😅 I had DD at nearly 43 so am definitely a middle aged mum now.

I made scones this morning. I think you have to be a certain age to enjoy a scone. I also made cookies and a lemon wobble cake that the dc will eat. Baking is my favourite pastime when I get some time to myself.

Missmoppetspoppet · 09/08/2023 17:05

@hiredandsqueak ooohhh scones. I love making scones. I have a midsummer day ritual of making my own ginger scones and eating them with ginger jam and as much cream as I can balance on them.

A poster on another thread saying that her mum was born the same year I was born Grin

DrCoconut · 09/08/2023 17:11

A visit to M&S food hall was my afternoon out!

DrCoconut · 09/08/2023 17:12

Also with regard to when people were born people think I must have got it wrong when I say my grandad was born in 1885. He was.

Clarabe1 · 09/08/2023 17:15

The enormous satisfaction I have felt by drying a full line of washing today closely followed by a clear out of the bathroom cabinet.

RampantIvy · 09/08/2023 17:16

My paternal grandmother was born in 1874, and my maternal grandparents in 1888 and 1883.

We all had children later in life.

Sorry for derailing a lighthearted thread but I just had to mention that I felt like this at 50ish for the first time and then started to do Pilates and it's completely gone. Might be worth a try if you don't already do it. It also helps with the wees in the middle of the night, as does eating fewer carbs (I can't remember the reason for this but I've read it somewhere!).

LightSpeeds · 09/08/2023 17:21

How old is middle-aged?? (Whatever it is, I think I'm well past it.)

Twobigsapphires · 09/08/2023 17:25

Sitting on the beach in Zante with my son and sons 20 year old gf and having flashbacks to when I was her age and had my life ahead of me, looked great in a bikini and life was fun.
21 years ago I was on the same beach with ds dad 12 weeks pregnant with said ds. It only feels like yesterday.
