Here in Dorset we have Puncknowle, pronounced Punnell
Spetisbury pronounced Spetsbury
Chideock pronounced Chiddock
And Shitterton, pronounced (allegedly) Sitterton Grin.

A popular story around here is the American tourist who asked the way to Kerney Aybass (Cerne Abbas). Not sure I believe it though.

Also Beaminster, which is Bemm..., not Bee...
Iwerne - You - urn

I've always known Shitterton with a Sh sound, thought.

@RoyKentFanclub local accent/dialect is always the way place names end up sounding differently from their spelling though. Even Beaver and Fanshaw are accent based, it's just that the accent is upper class.

Oi, Bulwell only ever has a total of three "l"s. (Born there)

@FuzzyPuffling sorry! Can't believe I've never noticed the correct spelling, despite living quite close by.

HUGH-ish A-PIS-co-pee is the correct pronunciation of Huish Episcopi (with the capitals showing the emphasis).

Ah ha. A phonetic pronunciation of Huish Episcopi. Thanks very much for contributions.

I definitely need to call in at Huish Episcopi on my way down to the WC next time. It is like a calling.
