Greenwich =Grinnitch

lalaloopyhead · 12/07/2023 08:26

If you head to Belvoir from where I live you will also pass through Croxton Kerrial, pronounced Crowston Kerrial...also same for Sproxton.
No idea if its true but someone told me the locals changed the pronunciation to annoy the French back in Norman times.
Its quite posh round those parts, so we say we are going to 'bel-voir darling'

PuppyMonkey · 12/07/2023 07:14

Are they originally from there or did they move there? Also… sorry to ask but how posh are your friends? Grin

The shall we say proper local people will always say South well - Google it and lots of debate about this.

It's a minefield! In my experience, everyone from the surrounding areas says Suthall (I grew up swimming at Suthall baths), but people who live there say Southwell.

The most pretentious person I've ever worked with became very agitated when I called where he lived Suthall Grin

TheHairyHazelnut · 12/07/2023 08:32

Southwell is a family name for some parts of my family - and they are regularly asked if they pronounce it Suthall or South well.

I saw the ad for the Belvior Cordial too, it totally confused me as to why they were saying Beaver.

I also live in Norfolk, my favourite is little hautbois, which is pronounced little hobbis.

We looked here as a wedding venue. I thought it sounded so nice with its french name and then when we showed up ‘welcome to Hobbis!’ 😂

Giggorata · 12/07/2023 08:34

Buccleugh = Buckloo.

YouOKHun · 12/07/2023 08:43

How about Featherstonehaugh as a last name, pronounced “Fanshaw”.

MurielThrockmorton · 12/07/2023 08:48

Hautbois is French for oboe - high wood

User365 · 12/07/2023 08:55

Whitefriargate is pronounced White-Fri-Gate.
Just around the corner is Blackfriargate, pronounced Black-Friar-Gate.

Could at least stick to the same rules 😂

Not a place name, but my son was about 8 when he first saw chihuahua written down and pronounced it as Chi-hoo-har, it is now the only way we will pronounce that dog breed 🤣

A vet I know told me that she broke up the word chihuahua so she'd spell it correctly- chi hua hua. Smile

MrsGusset · 12/07/2023 09:00

Reminds me of the ancient joke:

If the name Cholmondeley is Chumley then how do you pronounce Bottomley?

MissSmiley · 12/07/2023 09:04

TheHairyHazelnut · 12/07/2023 08:32

Which pronunciation do they use?

In my opinion it's south well if you're originally from there and suthall if you're not (even if you're very local) although there is an element of posh to it

SlidingHoors · 12/07/2023 09:05

Marylebone is said differently by different Londoners;

Marry-Le-bun
Mah -Le-bun (long ‘a’ like in ‘far’)
Mah-Le-bone

Plaistow is Plah-stow (long ‘a’)

Tottenham is Tot’nam (or To’nam with glutteral stop!).

None if these are as weird as Belvoir/Beaver, though Grin

They use south well - and they always joke about the element of posh being why they pronounce it that way.

CherryCokeFanatic · 13/07/2023 08:11

Sweating like a Belvoir

Jonnycakes · 13/07/2023 08:20

It once took me and DH a very long time to find somewhere called Hoick on the map as he needed to revel there. It’s Hawick. There’s also Slaithwaite of course for those up north (pronounces Slawit).
