Except the letting agent Belvoir. (Bell Voir) also HQ based in Grantham, near Belvoir (Beaver) castle.

We have an estate agent (Herts) that I pass on the way to work. I’m guessing they pronounce it Beaver too. I know the pronunciation due to the Belvoir hunt, they’re quite well known.

Mylefttoe · 11/07/2023 22:16

Milngavie in Glasgow pronounced Mil-guy.

The letting agent is definitely Bell-voir. And I'd avoid them tbh!

Southwell is most definitely not pronounced Suthall by people who live there. It’s South well to locals.

My other favourite Notts one is Gotham, which is pronounced Goat-um. Grin

It's absolutely Suthell! Inc the racecourse!

I only drive past them, not selling or looking to rent/buy currently. Why do you think they should be avoided? I’ve never had any dealings, but am planning a radical move in a couple of years.

EBearhug · 11/07/2023 22:24

What puzzles me is there's Wessex, sussex and Essex but not Norssex. Why?

'Cos the Saxons didn't get far enough up country. Not that that excuses them. They should have gone for the full set. We're also missing Weffolk and Effolk.

gogomoto · 11/07/2023 22:24

Y@Clementineorsatsuma

Definitely suthall from my experience.

Bristol has some interesting local pronunciation- brissal normally. I get laughed at by friends for saying this and other places in Home Counties accent

TheModHatter · 11/07/2023 22:29

I grew up in Nottingham, everyone I knew called Southwell Suthell.

Bemyclementine · 11/07/2023 20:51

I live in Norfolk. It's a minefield.

Happisburgh = Haze-bruh
Wymondham = Windum.

And so on.

And Cley! And costessey 😂

Whatthetrolley · 11/07/2023 22:30

Not a place name, but my son was about 8 when he first saw chihuahua written down and pronounced it as Chi-hoo-har, it is now the only way we will pronounce that dog breed 🤣

Hummusanddipdip · 11/07/2023 22:08

Ahhh is great fun, around Peterborough we have:

Cowbit = Cubbit.
Wisbech = Wisbeach
Caius = Keys
Benwick = Bennick
Great Wilbraham = Great Willbrum
Manea and Eastrea = Main ee and East tree

One my dh gets wrong is Broughton = Browton he says it like brought on

There are LOADS more

I enjoy trying to work out how to pronounce place names

There's a village in Worcestershire called Drakes Broughton and it's pronounced "Brought-un" so your husband would be correct if he visited.

Menzies pronounced Mingus was a surprise when we moved to Scotland!

Excuse me??!

My was about 5 when he called one a cheeky wow wow. It is now our standard name for them.

Vitriolinsanity · 11/07/2023 22:38

@Whatthetrolley DC came home to say the new Prime Minister was Tresemme Grin

Sorry not relevant to the thread, but if you want to hear the gossip...

I don't know if it's all their offices but this happened near me. I've heard very bad things myself too. I'd never trust the company in general if they're breaking the law.

Newtownards = newt-nards

A303 · 11/07/2023 22:40

I have always wondered how the village of Huish Episcopi is pronounced.

'Ish Epi-scupee'?

I’m going to hope that was just a rogue employee. What a thing to do!

EBearhug · 11/07/2023 22:44

Hyoo-ish Eh-piss-cuh-pee
AFAIK. Cousins live down the road.

Eminybob · 11/07/2023 22:53

Rubycoola · 11/07/2023 21:02

@poorbuthappy me too!

Beaulieu - Bewley. Not Bow Le Uh.

Unless you live in Jersey in which case Beaulieu us very much bow-le-uh

Rubycoola · 11/07/2023 22:55

@Eminybob well it made my husband and I laugh as we pronounced it the French way, only to be corrected by locals! The Beaulieu I mean is in Hampshire.

ghostbusters · 11/07/2023 23:05

I would pronounce it Ming-ees. I used to live near Castle Menzies in Perthshire and that's how all the locals would say it.

Chapel of Garioch in Aberdeenshire is pronounced Chapel of Gear-ee. There are loads of other great ones nearby.

I’m nearby and have friends from there. I’ve only ever heard it called Suthall by locals, never anything else.

Cirice · 11/07/2023 23:27

Belvoir was news to me too until the ad. I’d heard of Belvoir Castle but never seen it written down so never made the connection.

I also struggled with a local pub called Mainwaring. Again, I grew up on Dads Army so knew it is pronounced Mannering but hadn’t seen it written down until my late teens.

my late father in law always referred to Loughborough as Loogie Baroogie and I fail to see anything else now.

BreastedBoobilyToTheStairs · 11/07/2023 23:29

In Northumberland we have Alnwick ('annick') which is not to be confused with the town of Anick, also in Northumberland...

Up here in NE England there's also:

Cambois ('kammis')
Ulgham ('uffam')
Ponteland (which is not 'ponty-land' but 'pont-eel'nd)
Cowpen ('coop'n')
Prudhoe (more like 'prudder')

And plenty of others Grin
