I live in Norfolk. It's a minefield.

Happisburgh = Haze-bruh
Wymondham = Windum.

And so on.

You forgot stiffkey!

(Stew-kee)

Bobbybobbins · 11/07/2023 21:09

Menzies pronounced Mingus was a surprise when we moved to Scotland!

recklessgran · 11/07/2023 21:10

Cogenhoe pronounced Cook - No!

Tessisme · 11/07/2023 21:13

We have Belvoir Forest in Belfast, pronounced Beaver.

TheCyclingGorilla · 11/07/2023 21:14

The Althorp estate in Northamptonshire (Princess Diana's resting place) is pronounced all-trup.

Locals call the Walworth road in South London the Wharf Road. And why Suffuck,instead of South-Wark?

Because it's Norfolk (north folk) and Suffolk (south folk)

What puzzles me is there's Wessex, sussex and Essex but not Norssex. Why?

There used to be Middlesex too. Maybe have a dig through history? Perhaps Norssex was there 🤷

It may sound more like Wuh-Wharf admittedly but that's an accent thing, not a pronunciation thing.

Vitriolinsanity · 11/07/2023 21:44

I think Middlesex comes and goes.

What about Edinburgh while we are at it!

And Southwark Suthack Cathedral.

OldBeller · 11/07/2023 21:45

Yes, you can tell someone isn't from Leicester if they ask where Bell-voir Street is. Easy mistake though.

There's also a common legend around these parts that there was an Australian who asked the way to Lougabarougah (Loughborough). They sometimes announce it on the trains as Lougabarougah for fun.

PuppyMonkey · 11/07/2023 21:45

Southwell is most definitely not pronounced Suthall by people who live there. It’s South well to locals.

My other favourite Notts one is Gotham, which is pronounced Goat-um. Grin

GammonAndEggs · 11/07/2023 21:52

I live off a Belvoir Avenue. The posh neighbours call it Bel-voir. Us sorry people call it Beaver!

what about Lincolnshire’s Cowbit? Pronounced Cubbit

Toddlerteaplease · 11/07/2023 21:56

@OldBeller very true! Leicester born and bred.
Also isn't South Croxton actually pronounced Crowston?

WhatADrabCarpet · 11/07/2023 21:56

Not a place name but I came across a surname some years ago...Featherstonehough .
Apparently it's pronounced 'Fanshaw.'

Northernsouloldies · 11/07/2023 21:58

I'll stick with bel voir don't think I could ask for a bottle of beaver juice.

I always think invasion during WW2 would have fallen at the first hurdle.

German to local "is this Me Opem"
Local: "no mate it's Mepam (Meopham) shoot him lads"

FinallyHere · 11/07/2023 22:01

mauvish · 11/07/2023 22:07

Hillsareyourfriends · 11/07/2023 21:03

Southwell - suth-all
Blidworth - blid-rth
Beauchief - bee-cheif

Though Beauchief also (correctly) pronounced Bee-chif. It's near Greenhill, which is apparently Greenhill or Grenull, depending on whether you're talking about the social housing estate or the pretty cottages ;)

Hummusanddipdip · 11/07/2023 22:08

Ahhh is great fun, around Peterborough we have:

Cowbit = Cubbit.
Wisbech = Wisbeach
Caius = Keys
Benwick = Bennick
Great Wilbraham = Great Willbrum
Manea and Eastrea = Main ee and East tree

One my dh gets wrong is Broughton = Browton he says it like brought on

There are LOADS more

I enjoy trying to work out how to pronounce place names

CorvusPurpureus · 11/07/2023 22:09

Or Slaithwaite in West Yorkshire.

Local-ish: Slawit
Proper local: Slat.
